When I was a child, Evel Knievel was everything to me. I remember watching his failed Snake River attempt when I was five and I had all the action figures with the motorcycles. Those were the days when anything that wasn't MLB, NFL or NBA was relegated to Wide World of Sports on Saturday afternoon, so one of Evel's jumps was definitely a spectacle and you marked your calendar. Another piece of my youth passed away today.
Anyone remember if they even had those "Dont try this at home" messages before his jumps? I dont re-call hearing or seeing them, but it was so long ago maybe I've just forgotten.

Wow. Only GWJ can take a thread on bar bathroom girl-on-girl cheerleader action and turn it into man-on-man geek action.
That was back in the day when it was safe to assume that people had common sense and litigation didn't interfere with evolution.

It's a testament to his skill and medical science that he could do all the stuff he did and end up dying an old man. I remember him in the 1970s when we were all jumping stuff on our bikes an snake river debacle. Good times . . . good times.
I hope they allow motorcycles in heaven. Otherwise he's going to be pissed.

Knievel jumping over God? I can see that.
I never watched any of Knievel's jumps but he was the inspiration for Super Dave Osbourne. The man risked his life to entertain and for that I salute him.

I had his action figure, the van, and the motorcycle. I spent hours - hell, days, playing with them and wishing I was him. I watched Snake River Canyon on TV like it was a religious experience.
That's sad to hear. At least his life wasn't cut short esp. given his profession. It seems more like the nature's March of Time more than anything else.
I heard the news earlier today and immediately thought of his jump over the Grand Canyon and the cycle toys I enjoyed as a child:
So sad. That guy was a hero to me as a kid.

Sad day indeed.
Evel,
Thank you for the inspiration to try getting my 3-speed airborne, while breaking my arm in the process. Good times!

I had that motorcycle. Man that toy commercial tho (from the uTube) was one big lie wasn't it? I don't think the motorcycle worked quite that well.
