Eve Online - great looking graphical updates.

The new expansion brings really profound visual updates to the game, as can be seen from this video.

Nice vocals.

The video almost makes me want to give EvE another chance, until I realize that the trailer in fact shows what the majority of EvE's gameplay amounts to most of the time - flying past scenery.

If they had implemented a proper HUD and the feeling of being "inside a ship" instead of stiff 3rd-person mouse-guided navigation, I'd be so sold though...

*tsk tsk* Time to brush up on your back story about how pilots fly from inside jelly-filled pods and need remote camera drones buzzing around their ships to see anything at all.

Come on man, get with the program. /sarcasm /wink /nod

On topic, I always love CCP's trailers for some reason. Just watching them pumps me up for space opera; until like Shiho, I remember the game is a lot of waiting and staring at slow moving spacecraft. Still, I may have to check it out.

As a veteran of pre-Kunark classic Everquest, I thought I knew what "downtime" was.

Then I played EVE Online.

My girlfriend and I signed up for the trial together out of boredom yesterday. We both had an incredible amount of fun, i'll see how I feel after the two weeks, but I'm really drawn to the complexity of this game, and it reminds me more of UO than any mmo since. I already think the graphics are pretty, if I like this update I may cancel LOTRO (which I havent played in months) and give this a spin for awhile.

It has its high points but you can't go where all the action is unless you have a month or 2 of training under your belt. Till then stay in safe zones.

Is there any GWJ Corporation or anything in the game? Or is there just nobody playing it?

We had a small one going for a while a year or so ago, GWJ Enterprises, but most of us newbies who tried to get things going have moved on I believe. At least I have. There are still other goodjers who have been in the game for a lot longer and I suspect still play. Maybe they'll show up here to let you know what the state of the GWJ chat channel is currently.

EVE is much more enjoyable starting out if you have older, wiser (read "richer") players to help you get on your feet.

Well it's definitely gotten the 'next gen' facelift. I wouldn't even say it was necessary. Im sure that took their artists a lot of time and there's some payoff for it, but not a huge amount.

I enjoyed it when I played, I really only left because I hit crunch time at work and didnt have time to play. Didn't quite get drawn back in. I probably will again in the future. It's a good game, once you get the hang of it. The fact that you can play completely without grinding, if you choose to, is fantastic. More games need to take notice of that part.

They were supposed to have created avatars so you could actually and get around in the spaceports. I think they scrapped that and just went with this update.

Poly, you can't really play without grinding. Maybe in a large corp you could leech off the worker bees, but of course most of those setups have time and kill reqs you need to meet.

I enjoyed Eve to a large degree. What finally got me was that I had no good way of getting actual combat experience short of burning ships in solo encounters. I had maybe 10 or so fights over a few months outside of mass operations (which I quite enjoyed), and in all but one of them I was massively, completely, outclassed. (I barely lost that one because, surprise surprise, the other guy managed his distance better than I did). I was a good miner, a good scout for group ops, good in missions, great at clearing rats and hauling in-system. But I could not see any way to avoid being penniless and leeching off my clanmates, and that was not worth the time I was putting into it.

It's a shame, really. It was a pretty calming game, intellectually interesting and even the grinding (which was massive, hours at a go) had it's interests. And yes, you can watch tv, read a book, do chores or chat during the grinds with a good degree of safety.

If anyone wants a few mil isk to start with just ask. I still play, although I haven't been in the gwj chat room in a long time and don't have a ton of time. In game I'm Zaque Zundu. The graphics update is nice, although I think my client is slower now than it was before, but I'll wait to pass judgement on that till after I get in a decent sized fight (30 people min.) They added a few more things to make it a bit easier on the newer play to make isk again, but yeah you really need a lot of funds to start making any real money. You also need skills which just takes time, although if you have the isk you can get it to go a bit faster by buying implants early to increase your stats faster. The problem that Robear speaks of (lack of money to actually pvp) is a big issue if you don't have a lot of time to sink into the game initially, I can help you out a bit in that area if you want.

I got back to EVE last night and, damn! The graphics are nice. I see a lot of small things were improved too. In about a week and a half I should have more free time to dedicate to a MMO again.

At the moment I just noticed that MTF is no more! Where are you fstarta?! I'm still in the old MTF's HQ Station in 0.0 and I'm so scared to get outside hehe.

I've been back in eve for about 2 months now. I'm about 20 mill from my first battle ship and working on lvl 4 agent missions. Get the social skills for agent rep bonus up to lvl 4 and grinding agents isn't nearly as bad. You'll be making decent cash in no time.

If anyone needs some starter cash as well let me know.

I liked this game until it hosed my boot.ini, that is the dumbest thing I've EVER seen a buggy game do. Ugh. Thankfully when I booted, Windows was able to recover from the error, I still have no boot.ini file, but It can still get into windows.

Not sure if I want to give them my money now. Oh hell, who am I kidding, I'm still gonna play tonight.

They have a post on their site about this and how to fix it. They disabled the new contnet download untilt hey fixed it. Some people just got unlucky. I was warned by a friend of mine.

I'm not sure exactly how I was affected by that. I should affect XP users that have their EVE installation on C:. I have all my games installed to D:\Games and still it deleted my boot.ini.

Took me a long time to fix it, because I have a SATA Raid setup and I had to create a Nlite Windows XP SP2 installation back then with my SATA drivers and for some reason, that CD that I had, did not have the Recovery Console... I had to look for my original Windows disk and recreate the whole thing, using my wife's MacBook haha. Since I have no experience with Macs that took me a long time to finish.

I'd like to see a report from CCP showing the increase of their player base since Trinity came out. I know a LOT of people that are either coming back now or trying the game for the first time due to Trinity.

Drop me a line or post in here where that station is, I'd probably be able to scout you out of it, assuming it isn't 50+ jumps.

And don't forget to join the gwj channel (GWJ, pw: gwjeve)

Since last night, everybody on Local is just neutral to me now. Couple days ago everybody had the red sign on their icon. I don't have much to move to a different place, I should sell everything there and just get a frigate and fly to Empire or some other place.

And yeah, I'm on GWJ channel. I'll drop you guys a line next time I'm on.

ranalin - they didn't scrap it, the 'walking in stations' is coming late 2008. It was never going to be part of this patch.

Trinity truly shows CCP as the amateur hour company they are. Deleting boot.ini files, breaking parts of their game so badly that they have to issue bans on certain types of warfare, deleting implants when you clonejump, and general nonsense of that sort. The bugs in this game are ridiculous and there is no end of stupid decisions on their part when it comes time to nerf something.

That said, I've been playing for 10 months off and on (mostly on) and really like it. You'll know pretty quickly if it's your type of game, but I urge you to get out of empire as fast as you can and join the wars in 0.0. I was ready to quit the game after my first 2 months killing the AI ships in empire, but joining a 0.0 alliance saved me and I've been having fun ever since.

Aw shucks. You can't expect me to give away everything. What if I re-sub and get hooked again? I'd be stuck with all the newbs.

Plus I have a bunch of spiced wine that still needs to age another year or so before it's fit to drink.
