I think it's time to organize a night or two per week when people can expect to find the place jumping. Now that the new game rush has ended and I'm sure things will pick up as new maps come out. I'll make some official nights, but folks can obviously play anytime!

I forget who at the moment, but some people consider this bad form... not sure why. Soldiers, demos, and (now) scouts have access to the other team's base before the countdown finishes.
Queueball, how do you handle it when Steam "loses" your timing stats? I went from having all classes within 4-5 minutes of each other to massive differences, such that my will to continue this particular experiment is mostly sapped.
Strangely, they had a couple of classes with no points but the correct amount of time (I'm not *that* bad).
Also they "lost" my awesome 20 point pyro run and 27 point demo run.
I never really paid attention to this stuff before and now that I do, it just makes me sad.

I just had to suck it up. Most of the time, the losses are a few minutes for 1-2 classes, so it's nothing too aggravating. One time though it took off nearly 30 mins from each 8 of the classes, and another it took nearly an hour off 2. Also lost some 30+ and 40+ point heavy lives. After a while it's just you think it's just a game, and this adds an interesting twist.
It's worth mentioning again you have to be somewhat obsessive compulsive, since there are definitely times I get a class where I can't figure out how to use it on a particular map.

Well, so I'm not so OCD about it. If there are 3 snipers on my team and my least played class is sniper, I'll pop up to the next least played class. And I'll usually play a class for an entire map and then try to even up the other classes on the next maps. But when I get frustrated and want to make a change, I'll try and go with the least played class if it makes sense to do so. If not, I can always make up the time on another map. And, if I feel really pissy, I'll just press the easy button and watch the world burn.
So, now I'm not the world's worst sniper, having actually played the class. I'm still probably the world's worst spy, but I actually backstabbed five people in one life last night, which for me is like climbing the Mount Everest of spyiness.
It's been fun to do but having time in class get lost makes it a lot less fun because now I have to play like 40 minutes of sniper to catch up which I'm not real psyched for (and neither is whatever team I'm on).

I did that for about 10 hrs before I decided, it was a painful way of playing that way. Esp for the Engi. I've basically curtailed it to if I get Engi, I go until the round is done or the time it takes to setup a nest is longer than the time the round is expected to end. All the other classes I play until it's the most or 2nd most played class. Helps me build a little momentum with each class.
I don't get it, why are you trying to play all the classes equally much?
Oh and do you have Snow Leopard yet? Do you still need me to give it to you?

Why not? Before I reset my stats, there was a huge spread between my classes. Wanted to even it out since always playing 2/9 or 1/3 or the classes was getting rather dull.
And I got SL, it makes the MBP extra shiny.
I would definitely have to reset my stats in order to achieve roughly equal playing time amongst the classes. My current spread is from 200 hours to 17 hours. Yikes.

Why yes, steam event alert, I'd love to join the TF2 match in progress. Unfortunately, I've been unable to get a password to join, so I'll have to pass.
If you've got a public game going on, please hit me up again.
I too would like to hit-up Stan's Pub Server for some TF2 action (TF2 is something I'm looking to sink some time into, but am very green). Looks like the Pub Server is idling with no-one playing...
but the private server, she's got 18/26... yummy...
I'm sitting here waiting for TF2 to download Meridian... why must people change levels on the Private server

Ahh, I am glad I am not the only one sitting around waiting to get Meridian. Just another reason to hate that map.

So I guess we need to start up a new TF2 Steam group?

Why we need a special TF2 or L4d group is beyond me. It's played so often and so many Goodjers play the dam games you can just check your friends list whenever you want to play and see like 5-10 people already playing. Posting events for games like that are ridiculous.
Having saying that, with a GWJ TF2 group you could go nuts and post an event every hour if you wish! Your choice I guess.

It's my understanding that the events serve two purposes, 1: it lets people new to the group know when most of the regulars play, and 2: as a reminder that "game time" is starting.

That's how I see it as well, but I can understand where it would be frustrating if you don't ever want to play that game or don't even own it.
Edit:
Created the GWJ TF2 Group. It's public so you can all join and I'll try to remember to promote people. Can someone with some image editing skills make us a logo as nifty as the L4D group, please.

Look, I honestly don't have a problem with scheduled weekly (or even more than once a week) games for anything in Steam. It's when people start posting events to the whole GWJ Steam group because they need one or two more people to join up for, say, an L4D match. If we start sectioning off all the games, there's no reason to be a member of the overall GWJ Steam community.
The real, best solution is to zerg the Steam forums with a request to add the ability to suppress events for games we're not interested in.

I understand that having events pop for a game you're not interested in is irritating. We probably should have set up a TF2 GWJ group long ago. Nuking the scheduled events outright and flatly stating that posting events is "ridiculous" is a bit harsh. We have a system, it works, and our little TF2 community has grown because of it.
It's not really our fault that Steam's event system is subpar. We do the best we can with what we have.

Agreed! If that ever gets implemented than people can go nuts and set up special events for whatever game they want.
Remember I am not saying no more events period. Games like L4D and TF2 are special in that it is easy to include all the regulars on your friends list and see several of them playing EVERY NIGHT! My friends list is full of people who dam near every night play those two games. Why on earth would you want to bother everyone else in the group with an event for games you already know people in the group are playing. It's superfluous and just plain annoying to all those who are part of the group and never play those games.
I never said posting events are ridiculous. I said posting TF2 and L4D events was ridiculous. For well over a year now there have been two regularly scheduled events for TF2, I can't remember the last time there wasn't. Do people really need reminders for those nights anymore? After a year of reminders? Lets say for the hell of it they do. How many of the 1,192 members does that serve? I doubt even 1/3 of those.
Now if it was just those two events every week, it probably wouldn't be that big a deal, but every week there are at least a few spontaneous TF2 events posted, sometimes you end up with two a day! Now how many of the 1,192 people from our community does that serve? Now consider that every time an event goes live whoever happens to be online and in our group is going to have whatever they are doing on the computer minimized. Every time, and you can't opt out! Why? Because the TF2 players find it necessary to constantly remind themselves that a game is going on that night, just like it did the night before and just like it will the night after and the one after that for god knows how long.
Meanwhile you have this friends list that steam conveniently provides, where you can friend up all the regular TF2 players (like I already did) and anytime you want to play TF2 you see can find any number of them, on any night, already on and they you. No muss, no fuss, and no one else in the group who never plays TF2 but maybe plays a slew of other games with people in our group are never bothered. Doesn't the constant posting of events seem ridiculous to you now? It did to me, so I called like I saw it, and I already know that several others agree.

You keep saying this, but that's not how it works, generally. It's not like there's 20 goodjers playing TF2 across 20 different servers or something. There are a lot of people who won't bother joining Stan's (public or private) until they see a Steam event, which usually indicates the server is going to fill soon.
Look, you win, nobody's going to spam the main group with events any more. But that doesn't mean they didn't serve a purpose. It's Valve's fault that there's not a better way to handle it.
