Deus Ex 3 confirmed

Interesting.

As the blurb notes, it will be Deus Ex developed by a new studio minus Warren Spector (working for Disney) and Harvey Smith (working for Midway) so how it might turn out seems like anybody's guess. Let the rampant speculation begin!

After Deus Ex 2 I'm not as happy about this news as I want to be.

Yet even then we ran like the wind,

WHAT?!?! Ironically I was talking to one of the guys that works with Spector and he told me that a lot of the staff wants to make a DX3 game and make it like the first one and not the second one. I have really high hopes if this is true.

I was told that even the people responsible for Dx2 thought it was less then stellar.

Yeah, I didn't think Invisible War was that bad.

Hey, Deus Ex + Deus Ex 2 = Having the experience to know what works, and what doesn't. Even in the catargory of cover art. Also, I have discovered I don't know how to spell category.

I'll get excited once it's out and I hear it's not awful. With none of the original talent working on this, I'm not going to get my hopes up until I see some real concrete information.

That being said, I know Deus Ex is one of the most beloved titles amongst game developers, so I'm sure who ever is working on this is very passionate about it. I just hope they have the ability, vision, and budget to pull it off.

I know it had a lot of failed potential but it was easily one of the better games I played that year. If they can pull a Bioshock on DX3 I will eat my hat.

I wish Bethesda had the rights to it. They're doing right by the Fallout series, from what I've seen. Hell, sell 'em Thief too.

As long as Harvey Smith isn't involved, there's still hope for this.

Yeah, they wanted more time to polish but Eidos made them ship it anyway, whihc sounds about right. I didn't think there's anything fundamentally wrong with Invisible War, it just needed more tuning.

Warren Spector isn't involved in this in any way shape or form. It's being done by Eidos's new Montreal studio.

I really tried to like DX2. I remember getting to the smoking ruins of UNATCO... it was there that I realized it was a powerful metaphor for the whole game. I missed the strong characters, the sense of intrigue and actual decision-making, and the excellent controls from the first. DX2 was more DX 0.5.

I tried to replay it on Gametap a few months ago. It STILL runs like a pig, even on modern hardware.

I remember reading at the time that Warren Spector was mostly focused on Thief 3 (which, I thought, came out very well, consolitis notwithstanding) and that he delegated to Harvey Smith almost completely on DX2. Given that, I think Mr. Smith not being involved is likely for the best.

Smith was also the lead designer on DX1 though.

I beg to respectfully disagree.

I'll have to wait for more news on DX3, though I'll remain vaguely pessimistic at this point, but that is normal for the current game industry.

Chalk me up as one of the dozen or so people who actually enjoyed Deus Ex 2 (and yes, I even played the original Deus Ex on PC to boot).

I'm cautiously optimistic, but given that this is a "new" studio working on the title, it could land anywhere from OMG Stellar! to Pile O' Trash.

Definately on my radar either way.

My central hope is they make DX3 focus on PCs in terms of design, it worked great with DX, and the developers screwed up abandoning it for DX2. But, I'm not very confident that the lesson was learned.

Sorry Podunk, Bethesda/Fallout 3 is a sore topic with me, the editorial section of my brain ("Keep your smart comments to yourself, wiseguy") shorts out.

In case of Deus Ex 3, fresh new developers may actually be a good thing.

I played the demo of Invisible War (DX2) and hated it so much I didn't play the game. Then I played it this year on Gametap and found it to be a very enjoyable experience. It clearly suffered from being designed for the original X-Box, so lots of loads and small levels. It suffered from taking one of the great PC experiences of all times and trying to market it to a wider audience by taking that made Deus Ex stand apart from the crowd out of the game. So the final product wasn't stellar, but it was a very playable and fun game nevertheless.

I've posted this elsewhere, but Invisible War was simply a less successful attempt to do what Bioshock did: take a classic PC game and simplify it enough that it appeals to the much larger console market. Bioshock made up for its lack of difficulty and lack of consequences for choices with amazing art direction, new FPS gameplay, and an immersive plot that drew the player into the world of Rapture. It was also incredibly polished. Invisible War failed because it didn't give the player anthing new in terms of setting, art direction, or gameplay, while significantly simplifying the experience. It would have worked with more separation between it and DX1 and more time to finish the game. When I removed my DX1 inspired expectations from Invisible War, it was an above-average game.

Given the success of Bioshock and the popularity / cult status of Deux EX, DX3 is pretty much guaranteed to happen. The only question is whether they will make another Bioshock or another Invisible War.
