Help me decide GH3 or Rock Band.

I'm debating on one of these. I've never owned any of the Guitar Heros. I doubt I will ever have more than 2 people over on a regular basis to use all the Rock Band equipment. Most my experience will likely be single player or Xbox live. Since my wife is going to lose interested in mins. So you knowing that what would you guys suggest me getting?

Since you are not already an expert player Rock Band should be fine in terms of challenge (which is the main problem that people are having with the Rock Band gameplay, at least on the guitar). Rock Band really is all about local multiplayer, and as I said in the main Rock Band thread, gaming doesn't get much more fun than having four people playing together in the same room. Still, a huge part of the fun of the single player experience is learning to play, and if you don't already know how to play the guitar, Rock Band offers you three things to learn rather than just one, as Guitar Hero does. That said, though, ultimately what really makes or breaks the game is whether you like the songs on it, so head over to wikipedia and take a look at the song lists for GH2, GH3, and RB, and see which as the most songs that you like.
Oh, and speaking of the three things you can do in RB, even if your wife doesn't get into the guitar or the drums, don't forget about the vocals. There is a much friendlier learning curve there (I mean, everyone can sort of sing, right?) and if you get into the "Band World Tour" mode with you playing either guitar or drums and her singing, you might find that it holds her interest longer than you would expect.

I'm one of the very few people that really loved GH3, so, Rock Band would probably be a better buy for you. The guitar parts are satisfyingly engrossing and having my wife sing while I shred is an absolute blast. RB also lets you play and sing at the same time which is like an entirely new game for me.
Still, as far as freaking the hell out on a tiny guitar to good music, I still think GH3 is at least worth renting if you have the guitar.

Yeah, I guess I was trying to say the same thing except with the caveat that if the setlist in GH2 or GH3 looked better to him, he might have more fun with that. However, I would also point out that not everyone has been satisfied with the Rock Band guitar, so I might suggest also picking up a GH guitar as well so that you can decide for yourself which you prefer.

I want to enjoy the game though. My wife whaling on the mic will most likely have both my dogs howling, my cat moaning, my fish floating to the top of the tank, and me drinking.

Rock Band. For a newcomer the learning curve is shallower and you have more opportunities for fun with the other instruments.

Slytin, just bring your wife over and try Rock Band at our house. If she likes it, get RB. Otherwise, get the version of GH with your favorite songs. Ignore the haters, GH3 is just as good as GH2, it all comes down to the songs.
We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.
Rockband, it lets you customize your characters, which totally gets girls hooked. My girlfriend spends more time shopping for clothes and hairstyles than playing the actual game.

Yeah, my wife and I were doing a kind of grunge rock thing and last night after getting lots of money I tattooed myself up like a Hindi Nightmare and she went for a total "slut" look. It was kind of fun to see that when we became better at being a band, we had the simultaneous decisions to be more outrageous band members.

It's fun. It would be much more fun if you could do the "World Tour" mode online, but it's still good. However, it really doesn't approach the quality of the experience of playing in person.

The only reason to get GH3 is for the wireless guitar. Otherwise the GH2/RB recommendation is where it's at. Rock band gets my vote.

The only reason to get GH2 is for the Explorer guitar. Otherwise the Guitar Hero 3 / Rockband recommendation is where it's at. For mainly solo play, it looks like Guitar Hero 3 will offer more in the long run, but Rock band will have a shallower learning curve.
