Halo 3 Campaign - Achievements Question

Okay, this may be a really stupid question, so forgive me in advance if it is, but...
How the hell do you get the Achievement for the skulls? I've found one of them (I wasn't looking in my first go-around), but when I pick it up...I pick up a skull. No Achievement notice, it just stays in my hand, which means I can't fight unless I drop it, which then often means spending another couple of minutes trying to pick the stupid thing up again.
What am I doing wrong? I'm playing single player, if that's the issue.

If it isn't a gold skull then you don't get an achievement. There are four that are not. The Grunt Birthday Party, Big Explosions, No HUD, and the Would Have Been Your Daddy one I think. You can check at the campaign lobby by hitting X and seeing which ones you have open to you.

If you get one that gives you an Achievement, you should get it a second or two after picking it up. After that you can drop it and continue on your merry way.
Incidentally, the skulls make an excellent melee weapon, so technically you could still fight while holding one.

Danke, folks. I checked the Halo wiki, and I picked up the No HUD skull (the first one you run across, I believe), so that would explain why it wasn't giving me an achievement. I just thought that there'd be some notice of "Woo! Hidden item!" or something indicating success.

also depends upon if you have the achievement notification on or not

Actually, I turned my notifications off when I was playing Assassins Creed the other day, then a day or two later (after forgetting about it) I was wondering why I hadn't gotten any achievements. Talk about a forehead smack there.

It would be really nice if I could turn off the signing in and out of friends, but leave everything else on. Maybe I'll just purge my whole gorram friends list. Damn you all, I'm going to play in my own little world from now on.
In Ultima Online I used to poison hams and leave them on the ground in cities for people to pick up and eat. I can't believe how many people thought street ham was a good thing to eat. -Elliottx
