Rape by a 9 year old ... possible?
Tuesday, November 20th, 2007 - 12:38pm
I hope I'm not being totally naive here but I can't conceive of kids that age even being capable of such a thing. I mean physically. Don't get me wrong, I totally feel for the girl if this happened but it blows my mind. I have a 10 year old son and honestly he does live a pretty sheltered suburban life but the thought of someone his age capable of such a thing scares the bajeezus out of me. It doesn't help that it happened in the next county but living in Georgia does lower the bar so I guess I shouldn't be as shocked.
Crazy world.

Pfft. In the other, independent Georgia (A former Trans-Caucasian republic in the Soviet Union), 9yo boys are commonly raping other 9yo boys!

But what drives them to it? I always figured lust didn't kick in til puberty. Is it emulation?

Considering there was an 8 year old involved as well, I'm surprised you didn't use that age as the metric. Either way I was wondering the same thing. I didn't realize an 8 year old was physically capable of this.
Probably exposure in someway or the other. I was curious when i was 9-10 due to my neighbors (which were girls btw and they were anything but angels. A babysitter took me the rest of the way when i was 11.

1) Rape isn't about lust. It's about violence and exerting control. Children are very capable of both.
2) The article - thankfully - goes into very little detail about what actually went on between the two boys and the girl. So what classifies as sexual assault for children may not necessarily be "rape" in the adult sense of the word, as in forced sexual intercourse. I'd imagine there's a lot more that could classify as sexual assault against a child.
3) As for your question of lust: Young children may not have the sense of sexuality that adults do, but they still have the equipment, and at a very early age, they find out, "If I do this, it feels nice". That gratification may be entirely divorced from the hormonal impulses that govern adults, but anyone who's ever seen a four-year-old hump a couch cushion knows exactly what I'm talking about. (I saw it a lot as a babysitter, and usually, I was more embarassed than the kid was.)

This case isn't the first of its kind. I've heard similar news reports of children who have been sexually abused assaulting other children in the same manner. Perhaps one or all three may be victims themselves.
Or not. I'm curious though. Those boys got this idea from somewhere.

Instead of playing doctor where all parties are curious and consenting on the matter it's forced through physical brutality. If anything is different in this story to what previously happened all the time it's the level of violence that is portrayed.
So the investigations as to why this turned the way it did is key in the violent tendencies behind it and the complete lack of restraint most likely based upon skewed ideas of what is right and wrong or else the inability to comprehend or care about the consequences of the action.
I blame the parents first, an increasingly violence influenced culture second and an overly politically correct, over protective and yet hypocritical society third. Better parenting, less Power Rangers and safer schools and capital punishment (i.e. a good ass whooping) when lectures and negative reinforcement doesn't work.

I am rather confident this sort of thing as always gone on (aside from technology-related enterprises, which are new turns on old tricks, there is no such thing a new crime); but being part of an information-centered society, we learn about it these days. The existence of such crimes is not new, it only appears so because it is the first time to our knowledge that we have heard about them. Nothing specifically is to blame except the human condition.
My parents as children never feared child molesters, nor did their parents. It hardly meant that child molesters didn't exist half a century ago, but their existence went under the radar of cultural awareness. Modern society raises children differently with the awareness of child molesters in mind, but it would be presumptuous to state that the relative percentage of child molesters has increased, only the awareness of that group definitely has.
I think that's because it was usually a sick relative (uncle, cousin or brother) and shedding light on the pedifiel would have shamed the entire family.
My director had an interesting view on dealing with sexual predators. He said "Fill and old barn with hay, nail the pedifiel's or rapist's privates to a table, light the barn on fire and throw him a dull knife. After that the choice is his; cut it off, or burn to death". After a couple of examples are made out of people I would imagine the sexually based crime rate would drop dramatically.
I will say this though, if any sexual offense EVER happens to either of my daughters (*I don't care how old he is) you will see those events unfold on the nightly news, trust that!!!
