Zune, anybody?

I was wondering if anyone here is messing around with the new software for their Zune. I'm messing around with the Social, and need some people that actually have the dang thing. Add me to your friends so I can voyeuristically get off on what you listen to.

I updated my Zune and I'm really loving it. I believe my zune Social tag is: elliottxW
It'll probably just list that I listen to podcasts and radio.

I wish the Zune had some love in Canada. I bought a Creative Zen Vision:M back in December because they didn't sell Zunes in Canada. They still don't.

It still suits me just fine, but an 80gig Zune would be better since just my ripped CD collection alone exceeds 30 gigs.

I'm loving mine. I would check out the Zune software and decide if you like it. Main reasons I went with Zune over Ipod was it had a larger display, and a 15 dollar subscription a month for unlimited access. Plus I have faith in MS, and I like where they take their products. Only thing about the subscription if you don't renew you lose all access to what you downloaded. 80 Dollars is a killer deal also.

No Canadian retailers (online or otherwise). Amazon.com, for example, won't ship to Canada and .ca doesn't sell them. My only solution would be to buy it and ship it to a US address and get it sent up to me. But then there's warranty concerns..

Impressive! I don't use lossless codecs only because I don't have compatibility for it on all my audio devices. Yes, I could convert as necessary and I'm an audiophile my nature but it's just easier this way. I rip with lame @ VBR 0. Last time I checked I probably had a little less than 350 CDs.

can any of you Zune owners explain exactly what's different between these firmware, and what features you feel they offer that the iPod doesn't (aside from the FM radio)?

I'm hoping to get one of these for Christmas myself. My Dell Jukebox is getting a little long in the tooth. The new firmware enables wireless syncing, right?

Would I rather be feared or loved? Easy - both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.

The only things I can think of thats different is Wireless Sync, Social (you can share music with people through wireless), and Subscription Based membership.

I know there is a rumor about the 360 getting Divx support in the fall update, is there any similar rumors for the Zune? That would make me ditch my iPod and switch.

I keep *almost* biting on the Zune offers on woot.com and I never do.

Are they really good players?

I've got about 30gb worth of music myself and only a 6gb mp3 player. In a way it's kind of nice only having so much on the portable player, but sometimes I get an urge to listen to something and when it's not on there I get sad.

My wife bought one of the 30GB units on Woot, and then it basically sat around until the update was released. The first iteration of the software was an abomination, but the update is decent. Not the end-all beat-all, but it certainly has its positive points. There are some issues with the layout of the Zune that really still make us ask what were they thinking. Like putting the shuffle option not somewhere easily accessible in the music play section, but up a menu level and down a couple under settings. Why does the whole system have to be set to either shuffle or not. Why can't we play this playlist randomly with a quick selection and straight up with another?

If the thing supported DivX, then I'd give it a strong A. As it stands right now, I'd rate the whole updated experience a B to B+. It is amazing how fast even 30 gigs gets gobbled up by music, though.

I have a 60gb iPod video, so I'm not sure why a tiny part of me is curious about the Zune and the new firmware. I don't think it's better than the iPod at this stage, but I suppose I'm open for a new "champ."

(btw, shouldn't this be in the TECH thread?)

That's just $9 cheaper than Amazon right now, and you'll be wading through a Mass of Humanity to get to it. Having bought into the iPod ecosystem by wiring my car for it and actually rating a lot of my music, it's a hard sell even if I like the idea of the Zune Pass.

And seriously. Brown?

I'm not fashionable. I have a Zen Micro that was free, color purple and white. I have an iPod, I don't even know what model, because I found it in a parking lot under my jeep tire, so it's a little scratched on the side. But it works, all I have to do is get a PC dock or cable or something.. AFTER I find out what model it is.

Is there software to sync your Zune plays to Last.fm like there is with iPods once you sync?

I got the older black version and I love it. I can't ever seem to find anyone that has one to do the local song sharing but it's not somethign that sold me on the player anyway. My ipod broke for no reason a week past warranty so I said screw apple.

I didn't think I would like the brown, but it actually kinda has this weird glowing green to it. I really dig it, and a lot of people come up to check it out because it's odd.

I love the Brown, after playing around with my sister's and the one in the stores a few days ago, mine is on its way now. 30 gigs is more than enough for me. While I love music, I don't have like a bajillion CDs or MP3s sitting on my computer either. I just need something I can pick up in the morning, choose an artist or a playlist, and start walking to work, instead of sorting through my CDs to find something I think I wanna listen to, and then realize a few minutes later that there was only 3 or 4 songs on that CD that I really liked as more than background music, and potentially missing my bus.

As for the fact that it's brown... it's unique in that for me. I'm so sick of seeing a bajillion white and black MP3 players. And, it's not like it's poo brown. It's like a nice pair of coorderoys (yes, that's badly misspelled, but here's me not caring. ). Besides, how many people really have their MP3 players fully displayed now-a-days anyway? Everyone's got like a million stupid looking holder devices. I wonder now, if I can rip my Futurama, Heroes, and Home Improvement DVDs and put them on there. Hmmmmm... Futurama with commentary on the bus would rock my socks.

So you can get an original Zune and update it with the software/interface stuff from the new revision that just released?

I'm even more tempted now than I was before.

One question though: can I put all my mp3's I already have on it? I read one review where a guy mentioned missing the ability to use his mp3 player as a portable hard drive like he could with the iPod. Can you not just dump mp3 files on to the player?

I looked for an article or something about the new Zune software but my googlefu is weak and I didn't find anything.

You can add MP3's with the Zune Software.. not sure you can just drag and drop them on the Zune like a drive letter.. I'll have to check that when I get one of the new ones.

The new 80GB are very tempting simply from all the video I can put on there.. especially if they do end up getting DiVX support.

Mostly though I like the Zune for the subscription service..
