Warhammer 40K Roleplaying Game
(I haven't seen any discussion on this topic around here so I thought I would start a topic about it. If there is an existing thread about this please direct me to it)
Black Industries, the Pen-and-Paper arm of Games Workshop, has announced a Warhammer 40K roleplaying game.
Now, I don't know the the PNP rpg demographics around the site (for all I know I am the only D&D, Warhammer Fantasy RPG nerd here), but I am really excited about this news. The last Warhammer 40K rpg book I saw was the fairly limited "Rogue Trader" system, and I believe that book predates a lot of the more awesome Warhammer 40K novels and storylines that have happened recently.
The announcement also mentions that they are going to be releasing 3 different flavors of campaign materials. They are starting out with "Dark Heresy", a setting based around the teams of specialists who work for Imperial Inquisitors. Although they don't seem to be basing the game around actually playing an Inquisitor, I think anyone who has read the Eisenhorn or Ravenor books knows what kind of bad-asses work for the Inquisition.
Anybody else interested in this?

We have quite a few rpg nerds here. I'm going to be getting the uber limited edition in January when I get back from Taiwan.

Question: Does Black Industries ship to the United States, or do I have to order through a 3rd party like Amazon.com or something? The Black Industries Online Store pages are refusing to load for me today for some reason. I am going to attempt to get the limited edition in January as well, but I don't know what my chances are since I live in the U.S.

I'm interested, but I already have so much RPG goodness that I don't think this'll make the shortlist of games I plan to get.

Yeah, I just realized I am going to have to find a way to budget for the new 40K RPG as well as the 4th Edition D&D rules in 1st and 2nd Quarter 2008. I'll find a way. I am just excited because there hasn't been anything close to a 40K RPG since the original 1987 Rogue Trader book was published. I like the Warhammer Fantasy RPG but I much prefer the 40K setting. I will have to find some time to run the Demo scenario before the official rules release.

I was never into the 40K setting or games. Besides, I expect to be too busy playing Unisystem Fallout RPG with one group and playtesting the Dresden Files RPG with the other.

Link Please!?
I had not heard of an RPG using the Fallout license.

I'm quite probably going to buy this, despite not having any time to play RPGs lately. I'm just itching to play more Burning Empires, for instance, but it's such a time-hog.
I've been into 40K miniatures again for the past year or so, which just might increase the odds of actually playing the RPG, too. I know I'm not crazy about the idea of splitting it to several lines of books, but well, I suppose we'll see. I do hope they're using a more modern system than Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay does.

Both sound like a blast, QS.
You lucky bastard.

Reading the publisher's frequently asked questions, I'm not quite as enthusiastic as I was. Sounds decidedly old-school, complete with notes on how you need to play for a very long time and be an awesome roleplayer in order to become a proper Inquisitor. I am so tired of playing an apprentice - with the very limited time for roleplaying that I have, I want to get straight to the "good stuff". (Which is why Burning Empires is so cool.)

A few of my players are GW nuts. One of them currently runs a Warhammer Fantasy Chaos campaign that holds the record for the shortest time it ever took for an adventure to devolve into intra-party backstabbing. There's no way I will not be exposed to Dark Heresy, but frankly, I'm not that interested. I don't mind testosterone and I don't mind over-the-top, but WH40K bundles both.
I'll stick to Call of Cthulhu, Shadowrun and The Dark Eye, I guess.
And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.
Not licensed, my own personal rules translation:

If you've got any Cinematic Unisystem rulebook, that thread should have enough for you to start your own Fallout game.
There actually was a licensed d20 Fallout game in production by a company named "Glutton Creeper Games", until certain IP rights disagreements lead to it having the serial numbers filed off:

Eh, I can't say anyone was really expecting much to come out of them, seeing as no one had ever heard of them and what they had to show wasn't impressive. Plus, lots of d20 fatigue among certain segments of gamers.

As far as I know there is nothing stopping you from playing an Inquisitor at the start other than flavor text. D&D starts you off at 1st level but the rules are there to easily create a guy at 20th level and start your adventuring at high level. The Warhammer fantasy RPG is the same way. The starting careers are mostly weak at the start (which makes for a better sense of danger in my opinion) but nothing is stopping you from statting up a Troll Demon Slayer and going to town.
Of course, I have no problem playing a member of an Inquisitors retinue. I seriously recommend the Dan Abnett 40K books for good examples of cool characters who aren't Space Marines or full-on Inquisitors. Midas Betancore, Arbiter Fischig, Arianrhod, Bequin, and pretty much all of Gaunt's Ghosts are interesting, tough characters that I would enjoy playing. Dan Abnett is actually helping to write the 40K RPG books so I have confidence we will be able to make characters other than "Imperial Sewer Custodian" or "Hive City Chimney Sweep".

Necromunda was a great 40K crossover game that didn't get much attention. I'd love to see an RPG based on that.
Jebus, the Collectors Edition Dark Heresy rulebook sold out in 6 MINUTES. I guess that makes my decision for me whether to spend the cash for the deluxe version or not

I've read and reviewed the game for a local RPG mag. It's really very good.
Too bad that Games Workshop decided to drop RPG publishing entirely the same week that Dark Heresy finally came out. They also sold out on pre-orders alone! Regardless, you have good chances of finding a copy from online retailers if you're quick. (Last I heard, Barnes & Noble still had copies.) n extra print run is being considered, though, and they will release the three books of DH that they had already announced (the adventure, player's guide and monster book).

DH is close to Call Of Cthulhu, really. It's very far removed from the combat-centricity of the tabletop game. For instance, a single bolter round costs a week's salary for a starting character. You have two "Sanity" meters and it's all about ignorance and conspiracies. Combat is so harshly violent that it's likely that players will avoid it.

I'm putting together a campaign right now! I picked up the last copy at my local store, so I kind of lucked out. Shame about Black Industries. I was curious what the other two RPGs for 40k were going to be. I assume that the Imperial Guard was one, and either Gangs, Rogue Traders or Astartes for the third.

One of my Wednesday gaming group got a copy and brought it to gaming the other day. I imagine we'll try it out eventually, though I didn't get a chance to look at it yet. We've just started a Legend of the Five Rings campaign that almost turned into a TPK on the first combat.

Honestly, I don't think I'd be playing it since I don't have a group around to play it with, but I love the fluff so much that I might try to pick it up regardless.
Coldstream wrote:
The fluff is good - better than any RPG example I can think of. It's not so much the separate fiction, it's the way the whole game is presented. You're kind of slowly indoctrinated to the way the Inquisition thinks.
The next game was going to be about Rogue Traders and the final one about the Imperial army (Space Marines among them), if I'm correct.

Well, looks like some good news about the death of Games Workshop's RPG division. It looks like they licensed the Warhammer fantasy and Warhammer 40K RPG publishing rights to Fantasy Flight Games. Here is a bit from the official press release.

I am super pumped to be running my premiere Dark Heresy game today, a mere year-plus from release. Spent over nine hours prepping - I didn't recall it was so much work to get a new game up and running! I'm now putting together a soundtrack and if everything comes together, around 12 hours from now I'll finally know how it actually plays.
Anybody running or playing a game currently? It would be cool to hear about your experiences.

I wish there was a weekly PnP game around here in Fredericksburg. Preferably a weeknight as weekends get filled rapidly.

Well, today's game was a blast, as well as hilarious, and still suitably moody and scary when it needed to be. We even had one RPG virgin and I was kind of worried of scaring her off due to the 40K world being something of an acquired taste. It went just fine. Looking forward to continuing the rulebook's adventure in a week, we only got as far as the gates of Stern Hope.
Why did I ever stop playing these games for years? Such a good time.

So after a year or two of watching the expansions roll out for 40k roleplay, I finally got my copy of Dark Heresy today and spent a half hour or so flipping through. I wish I had a local gaming group for it, but frankly, it was worth the money just to have it on the shelf.
One of the things that tipped me over the edge was that the Rogue Trader rulebook is up to order on Amazon. I'll probably order a copy in the next few days, as I would be more likely to run that and would have a better shot at convincing others to play.
What's really encouraging is that it does look like Fantasy Flight is committed to the IP and must be working pretty closely with GW to deliver all this content over a reasonable time frame.
