Kerry and the Swift Boat Veterans Charges

Looks like T. Boone Pickens has offered one million dollars to anyone who can prove that even one allegation of the Swift Boat Veterans was a lie, no conditions stated. When Sen. Kerry offered to do so in a public forum, Mr. Pickens decided there were conditions, and challenged Sen. Kerry to put up his own million if he fails. It'll be interesting to see where this goes.

Here is the exchange of letters.

I of course believe Sen. Kerry's record will be vindicated.

Extremism in the defense of liberty *is* a vice. It has been since the first Crown Loyalist was tarred, feathered and set afire, and it's no better now. It corrupts first the individual, then ultimately the institution it defends.

Well, the conditions Pickens set go well beyond what would be needed to prove something true or false. I don't think the public showdown will ever happen.

Isn't the burden of proof usually on the person making a claim? You'll hear the same response from someone who gets their claims of being abducted by aliens challenged.

Not when the intention is simply to smear or spread misinformation. T. Boone must have figured that the whole Kent Hovind Creationism campaign was getting tremendous traction with the drooling classes and decided to replicate it.

There is only an up or down--up to a man's age-old dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order--or down to the ant heap totalitarianism,... those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.

Acquiring, organizing, copying, and sending to T. Boone Pickens seven years worth of journals, military records, movies, and tapes seems like a perfectly reasonable condition; and in no way an attempt to bog down an attempt to prove Mr. Pickens wrong in pointless minutia.

Wow. If the Cowboys were as good at moving the goalposts as Pickens, they actually might have won that game against the Patriots.

I suppose if you're the kind of guy who wants to smear someone's combat record, you're also the kind of guy who moves goalposts.

Someone needs to back over Kent Hovind with a garbage truck.

Go easy on Kent, Podunk, he's doing 10 years as a guest of the US taxpayers.

Here's an update.

Quote:

The group is working with Mr. Kerry, who himself seized on the challenge soon after Mr. Pickens made it at an American Spectator dinner. In a letter, he offered to meet with Mr. Pickens to rebut the charges. Mr. Pickens wrote back to say he was good for his money, but that Mr. Kerry would have to provide his military record, the journal he kept during Vietnam, and all copies of movies and tapes made during his tours there.

Mr. Pickens also qualified his challenge, saying he meant that someone would have to prove false things in the group’s television ads – putting aside the bestselling book and extensive media interviews that attracted them the bulk of the attention. He challenged Mr. Kerry back: if you can’t prove anything inaccurate, give $1 million to the Medal of Honor Foundation, a charity.

Wait a minute, Mr. Kerry wrote back, you said nothing at the dinner about just the ads. (At least, that’s how blogs sympathetic to Mr. Pickens quoted his challenge.) He said he’d meet with Mr. Pickens – “no variations, no back peddling, no retreat, no new bets, no changing the subject” – and direct his reward money to a charity that helps veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr. Pickens did not reply.

A reference in a later article from ABCNews states that Pickens received the evidence but has refused to pay up.

Quote:

In the June 25 letter sent from Pickens to Sanudsky, Pickens thanks the veterans for their research but still denies any obligation to pay them the $1 million.

"Unfortunately, key aspects of my offer of $1 million have not been accurately reported," Pickens wrote in the letter obtained by ABCNews.com. "In reviewing your material, none of the information you provide speaks specifically to the issues contained in the ads, and, as a result, does not qualify for the $1 million."

11 documented lies and Pickens ends up deeply embarrassed. Of course, his reaction hews to the ethical stance of the Swiftboaters, so he *is* consistent. No one expects liars to pay up on their debts.

Kerry should go the Penny-Arcade route and donate money to the charity, with a memo: "For T. Boone Pickens, Because T. Boone Pickens Won't."
