The GWJ Last.fm Army

I couldn't find a previous thread about this, largely because i'm incompetent at using the current search feature, but, for those of you who love music, GWJ does have its own Last.fm group. If you're unfamiliar, Last.fm is basically a social networking site based around a little applet for your PC/Mac that can track whatever music you're playing and uploads it to a website (Last.fm) that creates lists of what you listen to the most, what artists, et cetera.

So, here's the GWJ Group if you're interested in comparing your loves with the rest of us. Currently top this week (Prior to November 11th) is Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, for the umpteenth time.

No biases here, we welcome Coffee Grinders and those who have gotten to Choose Your Tag! However, I am considering a cull a and removing anyone who hasn't listened to any new music in the past 4-6 months.

Don't cut me out! I'll double my listening time! Triple it! I'll do my part, boss!

Actually, I bet a lot of that high Radiohead count is me. Maybe I should diversify.

I stopped listening to Last.fm when it stopped making sense. The songs that would play would never fit the station I was listening to. There shouldn't be Merengue in the Techno playlist. :/

I'd go back to it if it's been updated.

Well, the group Top Artist lists are by user, so it means more users were listening to Radiohead than anything else, not Radiohead got played the most.

If you're using it for music recommendations based on whatever algorithms they use, yeah, it's crap. I use it more for just the categorization, and when I want to find new music, I check out my neighbors' playlists and go from that.

I am a huge last.fm fan, although their subscription model is not too great. I subscribed for a few months because I love the site and I'm a sucker for a statistical analysis of my listening habits and wanted to support it. However, I was hoping that it would give me access to premium servers because anytime I listen to last.fm radio (personal or otherwise) it's buffering half the time. Perhaps it's gotten better, but it didn't matter whether I was on a personal or campus network, I still had stuttering issues with my streaming radio. Has it gotten better in the past few months?

Edit: Apparently not.

I have no buffering issues at all and am still a huge fan. I don't find my personal station that useful because its SOooo eclectic, and most of the time I just want a particular mood. I have found that tag radios are in general awesome.

The more tracks you listen to, the better its recommendations get. I don't play around with them too much, but when I listen to "My Radio" or "Neighborhood Radio", it's pretty accurate as far as the music I tend to like, and definitely within the ballpark.

In fact, I didn't think Last.fm had genre stations. Are you sure you aren't thinking of Pandora?

Maybe I have less varied tastes than I figured? I'm fully willing to admit I might just not listen to it enough, because I mostly use Last.fm to track my own music listening.

Damn, I wish I had better luck. I've never had streaming radio work well for more than two songs in a row. Most of the time it can't get through a single song without buffering a few times. Even here on a 20mbps line I have issues.

Maybe it's a location thing? I've never had problems either.

On a side note, Amarok has built-in Last.fm support. I absolutely cannot wait until KDE 4.0 so I can use Amarok on my Windows pc.

I guess it's time to see if XBMC will play nice with lastfm.

I'm already on there but my issue now is that I can't get the last.fm plugin to work with Foobar2k and the custom settings I downloaded for it.

It's a shame too cause I started really listening to some different stuff recently.

It does, it's quite nice.

I scrobble from everything I can, although unfortunately the third party app for scrobbling with the Creative Zen Vision:M is lacking.

I applied to join the group. As for XBMC, I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't have to anything other than enter my account info.

I'm guessing that it will be the same for my Zen:V Plus as well.

I had the same issue. I had to go and find the old plugin, and now it works fine. Try this.

That doesn't seem to work either . I can't find a way to turn it on or configure my last.fm settings anywhere. I downloaded a pretty intricate bunch of custom stuff for foobar when I started using it, so I'm not sure what all is different anymore.

Because my iPod Nano's battery is solid, I have a tendency to all of a sudden have like sixty new scrobbled plays instantly every few days.

But I do listen a lot on my Macbook. As you can see, I've been re-listening to the best radio drama of all time.

Well, here's what I did. Downloaded the tool, put it into my Foobar2000 installation folder. For me, the Audiscrobbler menu can be found under "File - Tools - Audiscrobbler". Outside of that though, I don't know if I can help any more.

Yeah... I don't even have a "file" menu in Foobar2k. Meh.

I don't like Foobar without the layout I have really. Maybe I'll just go back to Winamp.

Ed, what does the utility thing actually do? Does it run all the time? In the pictures it always looked like a player you had to use instead.

It manages the plugins and you can use it to listen to last.fm streams. While foobar plays songs it shows wiki style info on the song, band, album art, links to buy, add to playlist, ratings, tags, and etc. Give it a try.

I gave it a shot. Don't care for it. Found an awesome new setup for Winamp though so I just switched back to that. It actually works a bit like Foobar did now for me, except without the cool library sorting options. Maybe someday they'll add those

Note: My music taste is (admittedly) bad enough these days that some of you may be embarrassed to be on the same list.

Fair warning.

Most of the time I just let the last.fm app sit in the systray while I listen in foobar. You can hide the icon if it bothers you.

I don't know if everyone else feels the same way, but use last.fm for different reasons than Pandora. Pandora is better for creating streaming playlists with a similar sound, last.fm is better for comparing your tastes in music, however eclectic they may be, with others and finding new music. Instead of having to approve/disapprove of every track for the site to understand your musical taste, I just listen to what I normally would and check the site every once in a while. As much as I hate the term, last.fm is also a "social networking" site.
