Went to Japan with the group "Save the Whales," protested a whale/dolphin hunt, which is "interfering with a dolphin hunt" and that's what the warrant is for.

I should note that they weren't even successful, and dolphins died.

There's videos of her crying about the dead dolphins and photos of her in general looking very distraught- if you're into that sorta thing.

I knew the Japanese took their right to hunt whales and dolphins seriously, but this is f*cking ridiculous. I'll save everyone the trouble and not get worked up (here anyway) about how the Japanese, in their feudal sense of entitled idiocy, think it's their right to hunt endangered sentient animals and how wrong even this meat eater thinks that is... but all I can say is: they can stay the hell away from my cheerleader!

Speaking as "that guy" that has gone there and a bit further, I council you that this line of thinking does not end well on this forum. Though I entirely agree with you. Keeping Japan whole after the war was a monumental mistake.

Oh please, explain how keeping Japan whole was a 'monumental' mistake. You know you can't just slip a cliffhanger in there like that. I'm sure it centers around how splitting up the nation could've saved all those tiny shrimp from a fate of odori soba.

I don't know a lot of details regarding the consumption of whale meat in Japan other than what I saw, or should I say, didnt see. I dont remember ever seeing it readily available at a supermarket or even a restaurant. Not that I was looking for it. The whale meat that might exist nowadays for consumers on the mainland is a rare and expensive 'luxury' item. This is in 100% contrast to the role whale meat played as a cultural food and a staple for the nation. I've asked my wife about it before and she has told me when she went to school in the 70s, whale meat was so common, it was a primary school lunchroom food. Imagine a nation moving away from the equivalent of chicken in their diet. That is not the case at all anymore, it's just not available and because of that, the consumer market itself has shifted away from interest in whale meat. Japanese tastes are changing, because younger generations, not even knowing the taste of whale meat, are eager consumers of western fast foods and the imported beef their parents couldnt afford. Are there villages that have some dependence on whale meat, yeah there probably are, but the nation as a whole isnt munching away on fried whale meat kabobs.

Seriously, I hear tentacle rape a form of introduction over there.

In all fairness, the dolphins are not in that much trouble. We just don't eat them. It's the tuna that's in danger of extinction, but we keep on fishing for them. Either way, I prefer steak.

The dolphin hunt isn't so much because they eat them. It is because dolphin pods are often accompanied by tuna schools. Killing off the dolphins is just a way of getting to the precious tuna. More often than not, they simply discard the killed dophin carcasses as bycatch since there isn't a huge market for them.

This practice has been compared with the ecological holocaust that is reef netting for good reason.

If your main issue with eating dolphins is their intelligence, then there's an easy fix. Would you be okay with the harvest if the fishermen released all dolphins of a species that has been proven to be intelligent?

If dolphins are so intelligent that it's wrong to eat them, then isn't it wrong to keep them in captivity as well?

What litmus test should we use to determine which animals are too smart to eat?

A little bit earlier I was thinking that the aversion to eating dolphins was because of their intelligence. Then I realized that pigs are also smart and quickly shut down that line of thought.

As I mentioned above, it isn't so much about the dolphins with them, but the tuna. A better comparison would be killing off pandas to get so they can harvest bamboo for making chop sticks.

Paleocon - This was a hunt organized specifically for hunting and killing the dolphins. A lot of people eat dolphin meat. This is simply a case of one culture being upset that another culture eats an animal that they don't.
