Ok, you guys can scream "haterade" all you want but if I was a Sony Gaming Division executive right now, I'd be hitting Monster.com and looking to get out before the axe drops. This is going to be a seriously rough holiday/fiscal year for them if the price drop doesn't start working.

It appears that the price drop has started to work. According to Sony, they've sold 100,000 units during the week ending at the 11th. Associated Press link.

Notable observations: I guess nobody expected the Wii version of Guitar Hero III to reach the Top 3 - yes, third-parties actually can do that on a Nintendo system. Also, no PS3 title in the Top 10 - not even Ratchet & Clank.
Eh, the November numbers will be more interesting.

Man, in comparison, by the second holiday season (end of its first year) of the PS2, it saw several exclusive (not counting PC ports) major hit titles that year: Gran Turismo 3, GTA3, MGS2, and Final Fantasy X. Not to mention several other fairly important exclusives that help drive the system forward: ICO, Twisted Metal Black, Silent Hill 2, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (wow, that came out that early in its lifespan?!), and Jak and Daxter. Source
The PS3's current major exclusives list (by the end of this second holiday season) doesn't come close to the PS2's strong start. What a difference.
I can't believe The Orange Box only managed a quarter of a million on the 360. I guess Portal being a phenomenon was just amongst a smaller clique of nerds than I had assumed.

Sony has said many things about the PS3. Most of them haven't been true.

Eh, I can believe them in cold, hard numbers. And I can easily see the PS3 bumping up for a month as everyone who wanted it go get below the $500 mark snaps up the $400 PS3s. Hell, Simple 2000 says the PS3 beat the Wii this last week in Japan. Now whether or not that lasts is another question.

About as predicted. 360 fell back into place. H3 is #1 again in software. WiiPlay is still in the top 10 and it probably will be for the next 3 years. GH3 had a solid showing.
Interesting DS software numbers tho since Zelda and Brain Age came out 1 and 2 months ago respectively. Zelda sold better in October than September and Brain Age 2 cracked the top 10 which I don't recall seeing the past 2 months.
Also PSP hardware is doing fairly strong sales. Ps2 hardware is slipping.
And yes 3rd parties can sell games on the Wii. They just have to make good/appealing ones (and advertise them.) Doh!
Once again... who is buying the DS at this point? Doesn't everyone on Earth own one?
Also, Sony across the board isn't doing so bad in terms of hardware sales, considering that the 360 is still lurching.

I don't have one. Handheld games just aren't my thing. I'd get a lite if it was... zero dollars? I'd buy it for that.

Only in the 'sales per platform' category though. Technically, Guitar Hero III was #1 if you add up all SKUs. 1.4 million within six days - not too shabby, I guess.
Yeah,t he GH3 numbers are really impressive. I'm really curious to see the November numbers. With Rockband int he mix it should be interestin'.
I'd point out that the w/guitar numbers on Guitar hero make it an even more insane number. Because it sells for a substantially higher price, I figure they sold about $80 million worth of product, or the equivalent of 1.3 million units of software alone, dollar wise.

Bill Harris makes the interesting point that November console sales are normally about 2.5x October console sales, due to the holiday effect.
If the PS3 hits over the ~300K mark in November, it'll be party time at Sony headquarters (moderated by the fact that they had a large one-time bump from the price drop). Anything significantly below that will indicate it's time to start surreptitiously checking the want ads.
Regardless, it'd be surprising if they even approached the 360's numbers, which will likely be in the 900K range (especially since they started selling 3 'value bundle' 360s at the end of October as well).
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

My young son is on his third portable. His GBA got played out, and the first DS went missing a month or two ago. So he traded in some stuff and got a new DS Lite or whatever a couple of weeks ago. Now my wife says she wants one for Christmas. That DS is just a money machine.
buying one for my gf for her bday.

Nice link.
Anyone else see the Japan numbers? I'd dig them up but I'm at work and don't want to hit a site as obvious as Kotaku.
October 360 sales had the huge HALO tailwind, and the usual rule might not end up applying. Looking at Amazons current sales ranks, none of the 360 models crack the top 50. That's a huge drop at a time when the Wii is staying in the top ten. So potentially we could see larger sales because of the holiday, but not the huge spike because of all the units sold because of the HALO effect.
So not even 117,000 Guitar Hero fans bought a copy for their PS3? I guess they were all too busy playing other AAA titles.
For all the people waiting for TF2, the beta access for pre-orders via Steam combined with a PC preference for twitch games probably explains it. Many people primarily wanting Ep2 probably had HL and Ep1 on the PC and just picked it up again on the PC out of habit. Doesn't hurt that the game via Steam is cheaper too...
For November, I'll be very interested to see if supply caps Wii sales at ~500k or if Nintendo has been building up some inventory for release in Nov/Dec. Regardless, I'm sure they'll sell every last one they manage to manufacture.

Good point.
Absolutely. In fact, it's possible that all the consoles were helped by the massive GHIII sales last month, so the November bump may be less than usual across all systems. The weak US economy certainly isn't going to help matters.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

In the month or two before release I was conflicted over which platform to buy the Orange Box on. Beta access on the PC definitely sealed the deal for me, although the cheaper price was nice as well.
That sounds like a challenge. Prepare the wallet mortars! Attach credit card bayonets!
Seriously though, buyers in the US know how to step up and take one "for the good of the economy" during November-December. It's crazy, I don't really understand it, but I've seen it enough times to verify it's real.

One, I didn't know we had a weak economy right now, but that is neither here nor there, two, video games do not follow up or down trends.

Yeah gaming actually could get a boost from a down economy if consumers see it as a cheaper substitute for other forms of entertainment.
I'll try to avoid derailing the thread by agreeing to disagree with you on both points.
