Caught it on ATH's bottom line on ESPN, but no where else. Keep your eyes open.

Fixed. From the start, this whole "steroids investigation" has been about getting Bonds; everyone else caught in the net has and probably will get away scot free.

QFT. If you were dumb enough to get caught as well, you'll get slapped, but this is, and has always been about Bonds.

Basically theres next to no chance Bonds gets convicted of Perjury (and thus also the obstruction charge) from what I understand Bonds and his legal team basically has to stick to their "I didnt know" defense and its a done deal he'll walk away clean.

There is no one that will testify that Bonds knew he failed a drug test.. he can simply use the "No one told me" defense and it will stand up.

Aint nothing new about the world order..it's been playing since the day they put George Washington on a quarter

Why Bonds? To what end does this serve by specifically targetting Bonds?

This just seems so out of nowhere.

I think Leitch hit it on the head.

Quote:
The key point to remember in the Barry Bonds indictment that went down yesterday afternoon is that we really don't have any new information. Whatever your thoughts on Bonds, it's clear that the government is out to get him. You might think he deserves it. He probably does. But there is no smoking gun; the feds have been trying for four years to come up with the definitive piece of damning information on Bonds. They never got it, but they indicted him anyway, under the belief that an indictment would corral all the negativity toward Bonds into a public relations typhoon he couldn't escape. Considering President Bush felt compelled to release a "this is a dark day for baseball" statement yesterday, they very well may be right.

Bonds, as is his wont, is surely going to fight this every step of the way, and it's only gonna get uglier. But let's be clear: Bonds is not being indicted for taking steroids, or ruining the game, or simply being an asshole. He's being indicted for lying about something the government has yet to prove; it's the Martha Stewart principle. It's gonna be a tough case to prove, but that's not the point of this; it never was. Right now, the general public believes there's new information about Bonds, that the government is finally punishing him for the sins we all believe he committed. There isn't ... but we want our pound of flesh. We want justice. We want to see him suffer because ... well, because he's the symbol of how confused and conflicted we are about baseball in a post-steroid age. In a complicated issue, Bonds is blissfully simple: He's a jerk, he cheated, he broke all our favorite records. We want that pound of flesh. Give it to us.

And no one's really left anymore to defend Bonds. The Giants want nothing to do with him, Bud Selig is back to his passive-aggressive press release game and even the President is eager to sell him down the river. It's just Bonds, World's Most Loyal Friend Greg Anderson and Bonds lawyers, ready to fight a legal battle that they should win, but probably can't. They're gonna get you, Barry. This isn't even about you anymore; it's about a war we lost years ago but still feel compelled to fight. We need a witch to burn. It's you, Barry; it always had to be you.

The same president that oversaw Grand Central Station for steroids back when he ran the Texas Rangers. Curious how it's Barry getting the 3rd degree while Sammy Sosa, Jose Canseco, and Rafael Palmeiro escape legal troubles all together.

We've had this discussion before, and I think what I said is still my best reply to this news.

There was / is no shortage of bad guys in this play. Everyone in MLB was complicit in that they at least knew what was going on. Ownership and the league didn't care as the chases of McQuire (sp?) and Sosa were good for THE BUSINESS OF baseball, helping fans get over the latest strike. And the players that juiced, willing to f*ck up their health for fame and money, well fools in my book, but any worse than us lunch pail guys working ourselves to death trying to make a living?

Bonds is a d*ck, but that has nothing to do with steroids, he is just not a nice guy. But he's being made an example of, which is bullsh*t. Punish everyone that you have evidence on, or no one, CLEAN UP THE RULES AND TESTING FROM NOW ON, and move forward.

I read that if the players admitted to using steroids, they were not going to be charged.

Anyone else hear about this?

The indictment really isn't about steroid use, as such. It has to do with whether or not Bonds lied under oath. All he had to do was plead the fifth, like McGwire did, or admit to using steroids, like Giambi did, and he would have been untouchable. His reputation might have been tarnished, sure, but at least he wouldn't be facing jail time.

I agree that MLB is complicit in this whole thing. Selig was treating Bond like he didn't exist, all the while grinning at all the money his home run chase was bringing in. They're all hypocrites, to be sure, but that isn't a crime. Lying under oath IS.

This is true. All the baseball players called to testify at the BALCO grand jury were given writs of immunity, as long as their testimony was truthful.
