Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - Catch All
Thursday, November 15th, 2007 - 11:13am
I don't have the game yet, but as soon as I get some sort of extra cash I plan on picking this up. I really enjoyed the demo, it's one of the few demos I actually played through a few times because it was that fun.
The game has been receiving some pretty good buzz and review scores as well, which doesn't hurt. So anyone pick this up?

This game was one of the reasons I got a PS3. Unfortunately it comes out the same day as Mass Effect so it gets relegated to Christmas time.

It's not out until next week, but I'm looking forward to it!

Oh snap, sorry, there's been so many release dates lately I thought it had arrived already.
Unlike some others that weren't into the combat, I really dug it. I had some minor issues fighting the camera, but other than that the controls/cover system were pretty spot on, and the RE4/Gears over the shoulder view worked great.

I'm on the fence about buying or renting this. Not so much because I don't think the game will be chocolate covered awesome, but mostly because between this, all the other games, getting my car repainted and other stuff, I don't know if I can manage it.
Much like Ratchet & Clank Future though, I suspect I'll end up buying it because even if it's only 10 hours, it'll probably be an awesome 10 hours and the developer will be worth supporting.

EB Games had my copy waiting for me today, just started it up. I've been looking forward to this one for awhile, the demo was great.

Just a quick FYI, the demo actually takes place about an hour or so into the game. In the beginning there is a small action sequence followed by a fair amount of exploring.

Yeah if this game lives up to all that has been said about it, and considering the demo was awesome it probably will, then I have to say this will likely be a huge step in convincing people that the PS3 is worth picking up. I bought Assassins Creed today and CoD4 the week prior so I have to hold off on buying it till next friday but there's no doubt about it this is looking to be one of my favorite titles.

I am constantly amazed at how lifelife Drake seems just through animation and the random things he says. I'm not entirely sure I buy him as the everyman given some of things he can do, but Naughty Dog managed to breathe some serious life into these characters, it's impressive.

It really is fantastic, I'm having a blast with it. Some of the firefights turn into controlled chaos with Drake vaulting over barriers as gunfire rips around you, grenades come flying, bad guys running and skidding behind cover, it's beautiful to see and it all controls perfectly. Drake's quips seem perfectly timed and suited for the situation, usually echoing my own comments as I play. I'm gushing over it I know, but this was the first game I was excited about for the PS3 and it hasn't let me down in the slightest so far.

I'm enjoying the ride so far! With absolutely no loads once you're in the game it's tough to put the controller down since the story is so fun and it's such a gorgeous space to explore. Really screams for a rental though, it looks like it may be a quick finisher with not much replay there.

sounds like you could cut and paste this for nearly every game released this season. what does this kind of thing portend for the games industry?

I think production quality is climbing and the audience is getting a bit older, so paying for a game it may take weeks to chip away at probably seems like a decent value proposition for the most part. Assassin's Creed, for example, can be beat in ten hours, but people who enjoy the exploration and challenges got probably draw it out to 20 hours or more. I know my wife will
Uncharted is more so a renter than a single player game like Bioshock, Assassin's Creed or even Ratchet & Clank. Where Ratchet lets you play through with all your weapons and new modes, Bioshock has different approaches and Assassin's Creed has the exploration, Uncharted is heavily based on its story and a second play through won't change much or feel any different.

Good to hear!
Is there any variety in the levels so far, or is there going to be mostly foliage throughout? Do we have a lava level?

It was around six and a half hours for me, but I loved every second of it, like Certis said it was really hard to stop playing. Short but definitely worth playing. Drake is a terrific character and I really hope we get to see more of him.
As an aside, this game alone makes me wish that Microsoft would just suck it up and start requiring the hard drive on their games. There were no load times for Uncharted whereas Mass Effect really gets bogged down with all the loading it has to do.

Mostly jungle but there is some variety strewn about here and there. It was nice to play such a colorful and bright game for a change.

Finished this earlier today. Great game a bit short but the story, gameplay, and graphics are all top notch. Definitely steals a lot of ideas from Raiders of the Lost Ark but if your gonna steal might as well steal from the best. All in all I think it took me around 8 hours to finish.

Shawn lent me his copy last night after finishing it and I played it all the way through in one sitting from 11pm to 8am. It was fantastic! I couldn't put it down. It is definitely worth playing but I would highly recommend renting.

I thought the demo was great and plan on picking up the game once I finish some of the backlog I've accumulated. I resisted the urge to go and grab it on release day but with so many other games in the queue right now I opted to demonstrate discretion and hold off.

Honestly, this is one of the best games I've played all year, and given the amazing titles we've had that's saying something. The amount of work they put into the littlest things to make you feel that much more immersed in the story and gameplay is spectacular.

I really don't think I've played a better game all year (though I have to wait to play Mario--stupid kids and their Christmas presents). Yes, it's pretty short. Yes, there's no multiplayer. BUT--I just don't think there's been another game this year that's been such a completely joyful experience. I can't count the number of times I giggled or smiled while playing the game. The performances by the voice actors and, more importantly, the script were so spot-on that they could easily be a successful action movie. The gameplay was always interesting and challenging, even if it borrowed liberally from a number of other games--it just did everything so well. Gears of War had nerve, but if it went to the Wizard to get a heart and a brain, this is the game it would have been.
This game is pretty sweet
BUT
The wall running is so, so, so horribly bad. Especially when the camera is at an angle, trying to get Drake to jump in the right direction can be bad enough. But judging a jump correctly is ridiculous! I've made jumps that looked hopeless, and then repeatedly watched Drake miss a jump that looks like nothing. Sometimes you have to slide to the end of the rope, which would be fine if the game made it either easy to see where to stop (not easy from a far zoomed-out camera), or better yet, didn't allow you to slide off the end of the rope (the approach Tomb Raider took)! There's no need to allow me to press Down and actually slide myself off the rope.
After finishing off Tomb Raider: Anniversary, I'm so disappointed that this game doesn't have the same smooth, effortless platforming as TR:A. TR:A really learned the lessons of PoP: Sands of Time. Uncharted has seen PoP but didn't learn the lessons of making the jumping accurate and super-responsive. Too often this feels like "am I hitting the right spot to trigger the right animation?" rather than "I know exactly how far I can jump, I know if I can make it or not".

Just want to throw in a little bit more love for Uncharted.
I was surprised at how action-heavy the game was. In fact, I was surprised to discover that I found the gunfights often far more satisfying than the platforming sections. While there were some neat platforming moments, I usually found it too obvious where to go and getting through a level was just a matter of going through the motions.
Thankfully combat was extremely dynamic and engaging. Sometimes you could sit in a spot and pick guys off, other times they'd find a route and flank you, and there are even times when you need to run-and-gun. You were always running into some sort of new situation that required you to play it just a little differently and I loved it. Not to mention the AI was generally quite good and you really couldn't take any more hits than the bad guys. It kept things tense and challenging but never frustrating.
Add on top of that the awesome cinematic quality and you have a fantastic game. The characters are all very "human" with flaws that are exposed throughout the game - bad guys included. I think the game also had some of the best dialog I've ever heard in a game, it was well-written and generally delivered well.
As for replay value I plan on playing through at least one more time. I think it's close to having the same rewatch value as a great action flick... something you can pop in every now and then and just really enjoy. Plus there are lots of treasures to find and achievements to unlock for those that like that sort of thing and I want to mess around with the various "cheats" a bit.
Yeah, it's on the short side, but I think too much length would've made the story feel like it was dragging on too much. With a game like this I'd rather have it fall on the somewhat shorter side and deliver a solid cinematic and gameplay experience and then encourage me to play through multiple times instead of give me one really long game.
What it comes down to is that PS3 owners need to play this, even if only as a rental. I currently have it from Gamefly and will likely keep it, though, because it's just a fantastic game.

I never really had a problem with the jumping or vine swinging/wall running. The only time I ever got stuck it was because I was jumping toward the wrong ledge. If anything I thought the platforming parts were a bit too easy.

NECROMANCY!
Borrowed this from a friend and finished it last night. Thoroughly enjoyable from end to end. I didn't see the "turn" it took near the end coming and it was a wee bit offputting but explainable in the game's context. There were times when wandering around or hanging from the side of things where I was just astonished. Really beautiful with excellent animation, voice acting, and settings. 8 hours almost to the minute.
Pros:
* Gorgeous.
* Engaging story. Of course it borrowed from Raiders, Romancing The Stone, and National Treasure. Don't care, I liked all of those.
* Some of the best voice acting and characterizations in a game yet.
* Platforming mechanics done extremely well. Sorry *Legion*, I had no troubles with any part of it and I wasn't tired of it even at the end.
* Gunplay and cover mechanics were done quite well.
* Solid overall package all the way through.
* Puzzles! I really enjoyed the enormous, "National Treasure"-ish room with the Roman numerals. They were all done quite well, were spaced out enough not to get onerous and presented a good mix of challenge and simplicity. None of them were rocket science, but still provided satisfaction.
* Gameplay variety. It's a fun mix of platforming, gunplay, puzzle solving, rail shooting, driving and adventuring.
Cons:
* Heavily scripted encounters and they never felt organic. "Okay, 3 guys enter now and once I cap them 4 more will pop out there and once I reach this area another 4 will pop out behind me."
* QTEs. They weren't overused, but seemingly popped up randomly. Thankfully they simply require memorization so that when you almost inevitably fail the first time -- since they're so infrequent and usually have fairly tight timing tolerances and I still don't have the button placements memorized on the PS3 -- you can easily succeed the next time.
* It could easily have done without the aforementioned "turn" near the end. Easily. I was rather disappointed that such a trite plot point got shoved in.
* The jetski portions, while fun, were a bit disjointed given that you have to stop dead in the water to shoot. And the section driving up waterfalls while barrels come at you can piss up a rope.
* Never once got to see Elena's pixellated bewbs. A travesty!
I'm really looking forward to the next one.
