Boston Slap & Tickle, MLK weekend
"Boston?" I can hear you say. "In JANUARY? Are you CRAZY?!" Yes to the first and maybe to the second.
Arisia is a Boston-area scifi/fantasy convention over MLK weekend. It's about 2,500 people crammed into the Cambridge Hyatt. Rabbit's been to past years and says it's really awesome. (Can I have a quote on how awesome it is?)
We have the usual aspects of conventions: Panels, movies, lots of dealers, midnight events, and games. Our gaming ranges from spontaneous gatherings of Catan players to weekend-long LARPs. We also have a giant Icehouse set that gets broken out for a few special events.
(Have kids? Bring them. We have a special programming track just for them.)
If enough people want to come (last year the con sold out on Friday, so please pre-reg), I can probably manage to snag a room for a real party. It's a four-day con so there are three evenings to choose from.
If not many people are interested, I'd like to do a lunch or dinner gathering over that weekend. There are plenty of restaurants in Cambridge.

This sounds tempting. I live near Worcester, so I could probably get in on some of that action.

I'm in, just let me know when. Also, with 2500 people there, how are we going to link up?
I'm in Fall River, I'll think about it, never been to a con before. I think the idea kind of scares me.

Arisia has what's referred to as the "Voodoo board." The master list of attendees is printed out and put on cloth-covered board sometime on Friday. Circle your name when you arrive. There are small boxes filled with index cards with the most common names (and first fews letters of other names). Write someone a note, file it in the box, and jab a pin next to their name.
There's also the general announcement/party board right next to the Voodoo Board. You can print out a flyer and pin it on (cloth side) or write an announcement (wax side).
re:Barab
Arisia is a fairly laid-back group of people. It's certainly less overwhelming than DragonCon, GenCon, etc. We also have the Hygiene Ninja.
South of Brockton, here. S&T sounds like fun... at a con, less so...

That's kinda what I was thinking as well. I say we use the Con as an excuse to go to the Border and get wasted on Margaritas and fat on Fajitas.
So, is anyone actually coming to the con?
Nah. 3 Day weekend, and my wife is pregnant....I can steal away for an hour or two for some drinks and eats, but I really don't feel like dealing with a Con.
