Where are the Assassin's Creed reviews?
Monday, November 12th, 2007 - 10:08pm
I'm seeing a disturbing lack of buzz on this game. No last minute previews, or early impressions. The most recent preview, 11/7 on Eurogamer, was based on a tiny sample and tightly moderated by Ubisoft.
In the film industry this kind of thing means the movie stinks. I'm interested to see how the game turns out with this media blackout.
We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.

As I mentioned on another thread, the latest issue of EGM has an update to their somewhat meh E3 preview. The game's producers apparently didn't think EGM had given it a fair shot. Their impressions after they tested the updated build were still surprisingly lukewarm, especially in regards to the controls, combat and overall repetitiveness of the game.
It's rare to see that for a major magazine covering a AAA title, so make of that what you will... guess we'll see tomorrow when the reviews (hopefully) hit! The lack of previews may just be to keep the apparently huge secret affecting the basic nature of the game from being spoiler'd to death.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

I don't remember any reviews spoiling Bioshock. I suspect conspiracy!

The 1up guys seem completely split on it from the various podcasts and forums posts I've seen. I expect this game will be received in much the same manner as Crackdown was. Lots of love it or hate it reviews.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.
Whoa!

I've been so curious about this myself. Reviews of an AAA title should not take this long. Personally, I'm not going anywhere near this game until the major gaming sites review it.

Between the comments on the "automatic" control scheme and the inclusion of a weird sci-fi twist on a perfectly good period setting, Assassin's Creed went from a must-own to a must-wait.
No unity of vision = no buy!

Didn't you hear? It's a kickass shooter.

gametrailers review will be up in a little over two hours. (RRRRRRR how dare they use pacific time in their reckoning for the time to post)
It feels like a 1-trick pony, too. I bet after you finish the game you are sick of the color brown.

With this game dropping so soon, and my anticipation constantly switching from "OMG MUST BUY" to "Eh, I can wait", there has to be some good reviews ASAP.
Yet even then we ran like the wind,
whilst our laughter echoed under cerulean skies...
And why was the PC version delayed? Maybe it's nothing. But maybe it's a sign.

Yeah It's really strange that there's no reviews but that's not gonna stop me, my preorder is payed off and I will be picking it up either tomorrow or wednesday
It should be interesting none the less.

I'm leaning toward getting it from gamefly later on now. I already have Crysis to pick up this week anyway.
We'll see.
I do have some games to trade in.

It's the same with Mass Effect. I heard that there's some embargo until the day before release on that, maybe Ubisoft pulled the same thing? I dunno, the only reason to wait that long for reviews seems to be so that people can't cancel their pre-orders.

Gamepro's Assassin's Creed review. Sounds good, but I don't know much about Gamepro's credibility.
Probably so. To this day, though, Crackdown is my favorite game for the 360. So that might not be a bad thing, necessarily. I really really really loved Crackdown. I'm oft tempted to pick it up again.

Gametrailers review is up. Score: 9.1
Basic summary: Combat sucks, but that's forgivable, given all the other things that are awesome.
Also: New gametrailers review voice guy-dude? The equilibrium of my world has been disturbed. Need time to recalibrate.

Famitsu gave it 37/40, but they're Famitsu. The comments are more interesting.
"Apparently, the Famitsu reviewers were impressed by the story, presentation, and addicting acrobatics, noting that Assassin's Creed is a true next-gen title. Some knocks against it are the one button combat, confusing map, and occasional camera problems."

He's been around for a while since the original awesome guy is overworked. He's doing the Mass Effect or Crysis review. I think.

Based on the E3 showing, they still had a lot of bug fixing and polish to do to get this to where Ubi needs it to be, so I'm guessing a slipped PC date was a concession to getting the console releases done in time for xmas. Not necessarily a bad sign, unless you're a PC gamer, since it is a sign that the PC is a relatively unimportant SKU compared to the xbox and PS3.

Probably wracking their brain to come up with a keyboard and mouse control scheme that doesn't suck.

1up gives it a 7.0 (and gave Crysis an 8.0).

This is where i expected it to land 7-8'ish. Which while it's not life changing good but still fun.

I wouldn't read the 1up review, it seems like they spoil the twist... so much for that mystery, where's the rollback on my brain?

Thanks for the warning, MikeMac.
Since you've already been spoiled, do you mind giving us the rundown on what they did and didn't like?
Inigo, can I just try lots of booze in my morning coffee? please?
Miraba, I would recommend watching the Gametrailers Review instead. Similar pros/cons, no spoilers and pretty moving pictures.
Also, based on repetitive play style, no reason to replay it, short game (12-15hrs) and no online play, it sounds like a solid rental.

Totally diffrent set of side effects, also may cause lack of job.
hmmm, rental... this concept escapes me... must research further

Excellent. I always apply the 35% surcharge on any game length quoted in a review. I know some people try to rush through, but I spend a lot of time exploring, soaking in the atmosphere, and letting it simmer. 16-20 hours is a perfect length for me!
I'm mostly on a media blackout (for pretty much every game) but I heard that there's a ton of optional assassinations to do outside the main storyline, so it could be fun "collecting" those.
