What will it take for you to buy a Playstation 3?
Monday, November 12th, 2007 - 6:21pm
This thread meant for those who are on the fence about the PS3.
Me:
1. A less than $350 price tag.
2. Full compatability with PS2 games
3. At least 5 truly "must have games", that will not be available in other consoles.

I honestly probably would have bought one already if I weren't hoping against hope that if we all hold out just a little longer that every exclusive currently announced for it will go multiplatform and I will save a few hundred bucks.
I'm like a flashing lightning and a rolling thunder, I'm like a stepping razor
At this point, "free with a box of cereal".
Given all the Sony hubris, lack of compelling software, and the overabundance of excellent games I'm playing on the 360, I haven't even had to think about it. I supposed if the 360 and Wii software dry up, I'd consider it at a low price point to play Drake's and Ratchet, but I just don't see it happening.

The vice president of North American sales for Sony coming to my door with a PS3 and two quarter pound double stacks from Wendy's as an early Christmas present should do the trick.

I like your list, Mex. That pretty much sums up my feelings too.
Or alternately:
-A less than $300 price tag
-Killzone 2 is actually really awesome
edit:
Genius! If there isn't a Wendy's in the area, I guess I would also settle for hookers.

It would have to have multiple exclusive sequels to games that I love to death (Halo, Bioshock, Resident Evil, Dead Rising, KOTOR, etc.)
Since I don't see even one on the horizon, the PS3 will continue to be of no interest for the indeterminate future.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

For me, I don't care about the cost, nor about Sony - yea they've made poor choices, but you give me what I want and I'm there with my money regardless. Conversely, with no games I'm interested in, the price could be $15 and I wouldn't buy it.
If there was a PS3 exclusive that truly was a "must have game" then I'd buy the PS3, no problem. My standard for "must have" is pretty literal and I'm not waiting until there's 5 of them. Must Have = Must Have Now for me.
As a 360 owner, if they ended up with 3 or 4 really good exclusive titles I'd probably go for one.

A sudden and dramatic drop in price and/or a sudden and dramatic increase in my pay packet. Plus a good remake of FFVII and PS2 back compatibility.
I don't doubt I will end up owning a PS3, eventually, but there's nothing to tempt me just yet.

...my 360 to die, leaving me without a machine. Oh, wait, that just happened...and I'm more tempted to buy a new 360 while I wait for the repair than a PS3!

At this point, it'd take quite a bit to get me interested in purchasing one. Sony doesn't have a single game for the system that I must have, so they'd have to get some exclusives that were good enough to force me to buy the system and they'd really have to implement some sort of online structure that was competitive with Live. I'm perfectly willing to pay $50 a year for the Live functionality. Price of the system isn't the problem at this point. Heck, I paid $400 for an iPod. I'd also probably be interested if they gave us a controller that had truly been redesigned. Sony has essentially been supplying us with the same layout for how long now? That controller has never felt right to me.
I already have a fancy console with current-gen graphics.
Maybe if it was compatible with Wii games. They sure are easier to find than Wii consoles.

Honestly at this point I'm not even sure anymore.
Originally I thought I'd be sold once it hit $400. I really thought the 40gb system was designed with people like me in mind. I don't care about downloadable TV or music or any of that junk that would take advantage of the larger hard drive and I don't really care to play any PS2 games on it either.
That said, I've decided not to get one yet again. I don't honestly know why other than a complete lack of compelling software for the thing. It seems like the games I do get excited about turn out to be just ok or not what they were promising to be.
And then there's multiplayer. Oh Sony, how you've failed on the multiplayer side. The only multiplayer games I would ever get on the PS3 were games that weren't available on the 360, which takes away yet another reason for me to look at the system.

Hows 'bout Blu-Ray winning the HD format war?

its funny.. if I ever had the real desire to purchase a Blu-Ray movie over an HD-DVD (I own both the 360 HD-DVD player AND a PS3 and still rarely buy any movies in anything but DVD format) I'd probably break down and buy a stand-alone Blu-Ray player simply because Sony's crappy ass Bluetooth remote doesn't work with my Logitech Harmony.

Ouch. I may never get a PS3. I love my one-touch Harmony. (and so do my much less technically inclined roommates)
Not that that's the only thing keeping me from getting one, but it's on the list now.

Yeah, it wouldn't actually sway me either. It just seemed to be one more unlikely thing to add to the list. The HD format war is one more thing keeping potential buyers on the fence. I guess I'm just kicking Sony while they are down.

I recently purchased a PS3. All it took was the threat of not being able to find something that I might want later on: hardware backwards compatibility.

Same as it took me to get an Xbox 360: At least three (3) currently out system-exclusive games that I want, two (2) or more system-exclusive games I want on the horizon and the promise of continued support.
Everyone seems to be tossing around $300 as a magic number, personally I'm fine with paying $400 plus accessories but I need the software for that purchase to be worthwhile. Sadly for Sony right now I'm not interested in Ratchet and Clank or Heavenly Sword and the vast majority of upcoming third party games are multi-platform, which adds nothing to the value of a PS3 for Wii60 users like myself. It might very well be years before they hit that five-game number for me.

1) PS2/PS1 compatibility (for scaling, of course). Mostly so I can play the PS1 game "Fighting Force" in HD. That would be so awesome.
2) Dual format drive (HD-DVD & Bluray), so it can still run Bluray games when HD-DVD wins the format war.
3) <$350 price tag.

Sony would have to stop lying to us and making ridiculous, contradictory pronouncements of their own prowess. Their attitude has seriously put me off of *all* their products, not just the PS3.

It would take a shortage of great games on all the other platforms I own.
I am flooded with more games than I can get to, and I don't get paid to play the latest games.
PC, 360, DS, PSP - I have good or great games on each system that I haven't finished and some I haven't properly started, with plenty coming on the horizon. It's reached a point where spending more money on this hobby doesn't scale well with how much enjoyment I gotten out of the first X hundred dollars this year.

First I'll need the top-tier 360 and PC releases to dry up long enough that I'll actually have time for PS3 games. So not until early next year, at least.
Second, I'm still waiting for a nice selection of honest-to-goodness must-play games. I'm still not sure Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet and MGS 4 will be enough to get me there, but maybe. Then there's money. I don't seem to be able to find $400 in my current budget that isn't already spoken for. Not yet.
A Team ICO title could put me over the edge, though. Something as incredible as their past two games would probably seal the deal.

If pc gaming developers supported the platform with m/k support and pc games i would buy in even at $600.
Create your precious lists! I'll tell you exactly what will make any of you buy a PS3.
1) Certis tells you to. (That's how it worked for me, that guy is persuasive)
2) One exclusive game you really want to play and a solid backlog of exclusive games you think would be fun.
That's it. All this talk about backward compatibility, price and features takes a back seat to the games. Raise your hand if those of you claiming the system needs to be sub-$350 bought an Xbox 360 for $399.99 without batting an eye when there were maybe two or three "exclusive" games out. Content always trumps the auxiliary stuff when you've got the funds, the right game and a community whispering encouragement in your ear.
