Engadget has the first pictures and video of the SDK and phone prototypes. HTC has two to three handsets coming next year running the Android OS. Looks awesome.

You see the rumor about Google buying Sprint/Nextel?

That would be super cool, but is probably internet nonsense.

One can hope? That way I have a direct line into the Android platform via my boss.

So the Google I/O conference just finished up and lots of nifty things were shown with Android. Arstechnica has a written report with videos describing what is going on. The compass thing in street view was quite awesome.

I've never wanted a phone more in my life than the one he showed off on stage (HTC Dream). Sadly AT&T (my carrier) and Verizon are not part of the OHA so there's no chance of me getting a subsidized phone.

I'll talk to you.

I'm very interested in Google Android, even though I expect to grab the 3G iPhone next month. If I wanted to pick up a Google Android handset later, I don't think I would have any problem selling off my iPhone and recouping my initial investment.

(More likely, though, my wife would just scream, "MINE!!!")

Yup. I dropped my Motorola L7 in a bucket of mop water on friday and haven't picked up a replacement. I'm thinking of getting on for $200 (or $50 with a refurb) and then selling it once Android phones come out.

I just need Google to tell me that this is going to come soon. The last thing I want to do is wait and then start enduring push-backs.

HTC Dream video!

Unconfirmed, and possibly not "final" hardware, but it's inching closer to reality.

The vid's quality is so poor, I absolutely can't tell what's happening on that phone's screen.

Yeah, that's not really the point. You can see the Google IO Conference videos to see Android in action. This is all about a glimpse at the handset.

The quality does blow, but I was giddy seeing the keyboard tray slide out.

Yes, yes, yes.

That's why I bought my Treo 650, why I bought my BlackJack II, and one of the big reasons why I'll buy the HTC Dream.

Okay, so I was browsing tmoworld and was looking at the HTC Dream.

Do I understand correctly that for the same price as the iPhone 3G, you only get storage in the form of a 1GB memory card? For that price you get 8GB in an iPhone.

I don't understand why they'd go with memory cards over internal memory. Yeah, it makes the phone more upgradeable, but the phone will be obsolete by the time you'd need to.

I'll be getting a new phone in January, and this pushes me back towards the iPhone. But I will of course keep reading.

An 8GB microSD card is less than $100.

There's no amount of money that can be paid to make an iPhone an open platform, or have a physical keyboard.

It would be nice if the Dream came with a bigger memory card, but the fact that I won't have to pay money to get all of the "good" apps that run on it will almost certainly make up most, if not all, of the cost differential.

Well, we'll see...for the extra hundy, one could have a 16GB iPhone.

I hear you on the open platform, though, and I'll be watching.

That's true. Still, like I said, be sure you're factoring whatever you'd be buying from the App Store into the cost equation. I know for me, at least, I would be spending some bucks on App Store apps to replace missing functionality that the iPhone really ought to have standard by now.

Also, it appears that I vastly overstated the cost of microSD cards too. Amazon's got them for about $30 for 8GB.

Of course, I'm only assuming at this point that the "memory card" that the Dream takes is microSD, as it appears to be the common choice.

I'm excessively pro-Android and pro-Dream, though, as you can tell.

I'm skeptical about the existence and widespread distribution of good android applications. But I'm a T-Mobile customer who wants a smartphone, so I'm going to take a good look at the Dream pre-order if it actually happens next month.

Does anyone know if it actually has a GPS? Handheld GPS is something I really want.

All previous demos of the Dream handset have had GPS functionality.

The T-Mobile product sheet doesn't list GPS but does list "Maps", which may imply GPS.

I have a hard time buying the idea that the handset will release without GPS, especially since all of HTC's current "Touch" phones (Touch Pro, Touch Diamond, Touch Cruise) have GPS. Only the lower-end Touch Dual and Touch lack GPS.

$60 for the unlimited text. The lowest (200 txts) is $5 I think.
