Anyone try Ubisoft Montreal's latest, Naruto?

Naruto for the 360.

The key points of the review boils down to this.

*GTA world exploration with missions from the villagers.
*Virtual Fighter lite fighting
*Prince of Persia lite platforming
*Really good animation
*It's actually fun
*It's actually a good anime game. Almost unheard of.
*Japanese voices are DLC! Free!
*Extra characters are also free DLC.
*Multiplayer fighting over live with Online Tournaments.
*The show clips look meh in HD.
*Won't non-fans. They specifically mention rent before you buy.
*Fans will like it if they are caught up in the story via show or manga.
*Those who are not caught up in the story will find the exposition too brief.

It's in my gamefly queue but it hasn't shipped.

Sounds like a good rental. I went through a Naruto phase, so I'm excited to eventually play this game. Unfortunately, I'm still 360-less.

I'm no big fan of the series, and haven't read much of it, but one of his "transformations" is disguise himself as a hot chick to throw off the hentai pursuers. Nosebleeds play hell with fighting technique.

The bullet points from Edwin's post recap my experience so far with this one. Having seen the first bunch of shows, I don't really pay attention to the exposition but anyone who hasn't the show should be lost. Good fun and a shockingly good anime based game, but I'd suggest a rental at best for non-Naruto fans.

I'm a massive DBZ fan but never really know anything about Naruto, I might have to rent this or something to try it out.

I'm reviewing this currently and my god, it is actually fun. I have never seen the anime (and intend to keep avoiding it), but as a game setting and cast, it's great stuff. It looks great and plays well, and is pretty funny, to boot.

Three things against it:

1) english dub. It's not beyond redemption, but pretty irritating regardless. Luckily can be avoided with the free Japanese voices as DLC (they say, I haven't tried it yet)
2) the moving about is a little clunky. There are like invisible force fields keeping you from touching most places that are not plain walls - they don't have a proper physics/collision detection system in place. As long as you don't fight against it, it's fine - just a little jarring when everything looks so splendid
3) the fighting is pretty demanding. I have had to practice and was initially baffled to be beaten over and over again. It is pretty satisfying one you get it right, though. I think this is a good thing for hardcore Naruto fans, but may be a little much for young kids (and adults past their prime)

Based on one day's gaming, I would say one of the better action adventures in quite a while, certainly something I'd be happy to buy as a Christmas present for a Naruto fan.

Now, as I'm not an anime consumer, what's with the characters dropping logs when clobbered?

Glad to hear it's fun. It's a planned rental sometime in the future.

In the show one of the first moves a ninja learns is how to clone themself/make a decoy. The decoys look and act like the character until they're hit, when they go poof and reveal that it's actually a log. It gets overused.
I stopped watching about 9 months ago, which was a few months longer than I should have watched. But the first season was really good - after that, brief flashes of "cool!" in a pool of crap. From what I understand the game is based on the first season/story arc.

I'm guessing/assuming that it includes subtitles or subtitles are available by default for the hearing impaired. As much as I prefer the original voice acting my Japanese is awful.
Although I did see the Naruto movie in Japan when it came out. Not a good movie, but kind of fun to go to a Japanese movie theater and be the only white guy, and the only people over 18 there without kids. Bad movie though.

Yeah it has subtitles. Which come on-screen in an irritating wavey sort of manner.

Actually, pretty rare lately that a game doesn't have subtitles. I often play with the sound turned way down and English not being my native language, it's something I notice.

I don't frequent Destructiod but I happened to come across a review of Naruto there as well.

The skinny:

Quote:
Don't let a few crappy voice overs and a few tedious coin quests get in the way of trying out Naruto: Rise of a Ninja. In the end, this game exceeded my expectations, and Ubisoft should be commended for doing something different and ambitious with this anime license. The story mode is worth the price of entry alone, and the fun fighting and excellent online matches are both wonderful bonuses. Of course, this is an absolute must for Naruto fans, but those looking for a solid adventure title for the Xbox 360 should take notice as well
