At least I am hoping it is the video card. Called my wife today as I am out of town, and apparently she went to turn the computer on and the only thing she could see on the monitor were bands of color. This is the vid card correct? Or at least the best guess? Is the fix to just replace it then? Or could I possibly try new drivers?

another question, any recomendations on an AGP video card that works with windows xp, have a dell computer that is 4 years old, so unfortunately no pciexpress for me and I can't afford to build a new pc right now.

Take out the videocard, so its not queried anymore, and hook up the monitor to the onboard video. Chances are you have onboard video ? See what happens.

Yeah, there's no way you can remotely diagnose that one. It could be almost anything.

I'd say testing the monitor on another rig would be a good first step and also a quick way of eliminating (or identifying) the monitor as the source of the problem and allow you to move on to actually troubleshooting the computer itself.

What kind of monitor? I've seen several Trinitrons go bad this very way.

Unplug the monitor from the video card. Leave the power plugged in. Most monitors have a self test. If that self test comes up, its either a problem with the video cable or video card.

If you have a spare video cable, swap that in to rule that out as the problem.

Wife was playing Hellgate and the colors just started going wonky, so she shut the game and the pc down, rebooted the pc, and got the stripes of color. Tried rebooting again and got the same thing. Don't have a spare vid cable and don't have onboard vid card. Was thinking of getting a vid card and seeing if that worked, if not, back to square 1....

Tried getting the latest patch, it worked temporarily till I tried playing a game, then it went crazy again. Replaced the video card and now it works just fine;)
