Adorable. Makes me wish I could get away with a small, underpowered laptop.
Yeah, it's scary. I'm staring into the abyss right now, and it's staring into me, which I think is kind of a dick move on the abyss's part. - Nyles
Let me know how it goes. I'm thinking of getting a UMPC for field use with a bluetooth keyboard.

I've been eagerly following this to see if it's worth it. I've been looking for something larger than a PDA, but don't necessarily need everything a laptop has (including its price).

So what do you do with something like that? The size of the keyboard indicates that it would destroy your hands after an hour.

Ordered...
Not sure really... lack of an Express Card slot means no elegant cellular data.. but I suppose you could go with the enormous USB ones.. that would sorta be key for this portable..

Maybe I'm too used to a higher resolution to be using it. I have hard enough trouble on a 15.4" laptop keyboard.

Yeah, I was thinking of getting one of these, but I think I'm going to get a Nokia n800. You had one of those, Guru?

Yeah.. it was ok..I should break it out again now that I have a real 3G phone..

Isn't the new N810 coming out soon? If you don't want it GG i'll be happy to take it off your hands. I need something for work since my laptop died today. =\

yeah they were supposed to be updating it shortly.. not sure exactly what could be all that different about it.. there isnt a new Symbian OS or anything..

From what I gather, the 810 has a slide-out keyboard, on-board GPS, and a mini-SD slot.
But I prefer the N800 with it's two full-size SD slots.
The big thing is the updated OS, apparently it'll up the n800's clockspeed and add some snazzy UI improvements.
And Guru, if this guy I'm buying a 800 from finks out I'd like to take yours off your hands, too.
Edit: Well, sh*t, Ed beat me to it.

We have something like this at my store that's made by Sony. It's very freakin' cool to play around with but I don't think I'd consider it for anything other than short-session use as it feels as though it would get very uncomfortable to use after a while. This one doesn't look like quite the same idea as the Sony but something similar. I'm definitely interested in hearing how it works.

I'd consider getting something like this. We are not provided with laptops at work, and while we can build out our own desktops, the hardware we have to choose from is generally not that wonderful. So along with my two white-box work stations, I use my own laptop ... which I really hate lugging back and forth. Having something tiny to lug back and forth, that I could even realistically use on the train on those days I'm able to actually snag a seat would be awesome. The specs claim it has a vga port (though it doesnt show up in the pictures, I assume it is on the back of the machine), so I'd hook up a monitor, and use Synergy to use of a full-sized keyboard and my favorite mouse.
I think I just talked myself into buying one, once I feel a little less broke.

That said, the pixel density on the n800 screen is at times painful to read from. The eee pc has the same screen size and resolution as first generation UMPCs (it even has the same processor and shipping memory as the original Samsun Q1). It's the same resolution as the n800, but much larger.

I wonder if you could shove Win98 or WinXP on one of these....
I'd love a tiny little laptop for couch-surfing as well as letting the little one play flash games at NickJr.com but I'd like to also be able to put his Jumpstart World game on there. The pricepoint on this thing is phenomenal, but for what I'd use it for, Linux wouldn't be my OS of choice.
Also, the very limited desktop would get annoying - again, for *my* intended usages.
Looks like the primary(sole) method of software installation would be something like apt-get?

Well I got it.. its very small heh.. Keyboard is not bad.. the included Linux OS is interesting..basically hides all function other than showing you tasks and programs.

Elaborate! I'm curious to see if it's a reasonable idea to consider it above a PDA if you're not in the market for a full fledged laptop.

Well I'm typing this on the Eeepc and the keyboard defintetly takes somte gettting used to. The shift key is in a very odd place so its easy to miss. The actual keys are nice though not to mushy...just really really small.
Theres not so much an OS but rather a custom "wrapper" or desktop that essentially has some icons for all the programs this has... Im not even sure you can actually add any new software...still trying to see if you can get some sort of vpn access..or perhaps a gotomypc type client.
the res of the screen is really small also.. so for instance gwj formats oddly

From the review I read, you can. I can't recall if it was Ars or Engadget or what.
Anyway, you *can* add software, but I *think* it's just through the package manager. The only one I recall the name of is apt (or was it apt-get?), and I seem to recall something about having to manually go find anything you manually install when you want to launch it. I could be wrong.
But yeah, what I read described the user experience as a fairly tight wrapper around linux.
It's intriguing, especially if you want a "surf" box, I'm just not sure how truly usable it would be for my family.
Thanks for dropping the $300 on it so we can all find out more!

Yeah I'm trying to remember where I found this article that had links to 3 different reviews (it was in my sea of RSS feeds so I can't remember) and one of the reviews showed some nice hacks.
EDIT: Found it! CLICKY!

Oh cool.. I'll scrounge up a USB DVD drive and install XP Pro on it.. I'd much rather have that running than this Linux.. since that way I can easily VPN in and run RDP...will also upgrade the memory from 512MB to 2GB

GG- I thought the max RAM was 1 GB?
"Eat Keel, Hellbug!"
Yeah... the bios sees 2GB but the Linux distro only sees 1GB.. I wonder if XP will see all 2gb.

Yeah I got a stripped down XP Pro install on there... which left me with about 500mb free after Open Office was installed.. XP Pro on there with 2GB of Ram installed is very zippy.. perfectly usable.. The limited resolution makes some browsing weird since some sites format oddly.. but for the price and with XP on there its extremely usable as a tiny ultraportable..
It worked fine with my Verizon USB EVDO card.. and I was able to VPN into my network.. remote desktop my work PC and get all my email.
With its VGA out port it would make a fine laptop to carry to meetings if your doing a presentation on there..
Just load up Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer and your gtg

I would love one of these for a little backpack hacktop. Though that default Xandros distro would have to go.
