Whether this is a MMO or not, just shows how the industry does not have a set of defining rules for a MMO. However, I think if the industry set up such rules defining a MMO they would shoot themselves in the foot on marketing. Basically it comes down to the indivduals point of view...

It's good! I'm still eagerly awaiting the next one. He writes too slowly, I just hope he doesn't die before he finishes the books (not being mean, just voicing a concern!).
And yeah, I don't typically like to rip off names from books, but sometimes either the name is just too cool to pass up (like Althalus, from a lesser-known Eddings book) or I just really like the character (like Brienne, who just happened to perfectly fit the class
But heck, all of Martin's characters are awesome!).

Well I can see some MMO traits for sure, and D2 offers more than most MMO's today. The only thing that probably drops it out of the running is a persistent state. Again it is still in the eye of the beholder, if you feel it is - then it is. The term MMO (Massive Multi-Player Online) - by that definition yes D2 is and MMO; it was massive, it had MP, and it was online...
Here is my trivia question of the day - Did D2 have crafting?

If D2 counts as an mmo, then yeah, HGL does too. But if D2 doesn't, then neither does HGL. They're too similar overall to be in different genres.
