Seasonal Games?

I find, as I go along, there are certain games i'll always whip out during certain times of the year. For instance, for Halloween, i'm going through F.E.A.R. again. I know it's criticisms, many are valid, especially the "GOTCHA!" nature of most of the scares.

Problematically, the "GOTCHA" thing works on me 99.99% of the time, and it's just creepy enough (Samara-Inspired Scary Wet Child aside) to be great for Halloween, at least, for me.

And I know once November rolls along, i'll get to play through Indigo Prophecy again, as I played it for the first time, oddly enough, in the dead of winter, so it seems fitting only to play it once it's reliably freezing at night outside.

Anyone else have certain games they can/do play only at certain times of the year? Be it for atmospheric reasons (like mine) or even just scheduling.

In the fourth quarter there are generally enough new games I want to play that I don't go back for the older games. If I do it's whatever strikes my fantasy though, never really synced it up with the holidays or weather.

Mine are more associated with the amount of free time I have; and at the holidays I just flat don't usually have any. So during the fall and early winter I'll be playing short games, usually FPS or short platformers unless it's a MUST play RPG and usually it's a re-play of something because I don't have time to focus on the really new. Once the Holiday Heck is over I'll settle in for a long winter's grind through the really extravagent RPG's and all the new and fun stuff I didn't get to in the fall hassles. Summers are spent playing anything I missed.

This year is going to be screwy if they manage to actually drop MGS4, Final Fantasy XIII and Assassin's Creed when they said they're going to.

I usually find myself playing Metal Gear Solid 2 around Christmas, though this year I imagine I wont be playing anything but Team Fortress 2.

Edit: Legion, very touching.

Usually I take a week off at Christmas, so I have some time to make a good run at an RPG. I bought a 360 last year at Christmas, so I was caught up in exploring everything 360, but the year before I killed most of Morrowind. This Christmas I think I will play Mass Effect.

I look forward to the holidays mainly because I get time to play games for a long period without repercussions. Just me, my holiday decorations and lights, a plate of delicious homemade food, reclining chair, and controller.

Ahh, it's the life.

What game I play though usually doesn't matter. If I want to feel really happy and nostalgic I'll whip out the SNES and burn through Earthbound in two days.

I tend to attach games to certain points in the year depending on when i first experienced them.

Last christmas, for example, i played through Majora's Mask. I think i might pop in the game again and give it a whirl. Kinda like when i was young i used to read Miss Read's The Christmas Mouse every year...

I'm the same with films... have to try and watch It's a Wonderful Life, Scrooge (the musical version - though i can't remember whether it was called A Christmas Carole).

In fact most of my cherished game memories lie around christmas time.... FF8 and 9 are good examples. Memories of happier times....

Boy, hearing you say that reminds me of a few summers ago when I played through FF7. I'm not a huge J-rpg fan, but boy I couldn't get enough of that game. Reminds me of when life didn't seem as serious, and when I actually had time to play such epic games.

I play sports titles (including things like snowboarding and skiing games in winter) far more during their respective real-world seasons than I do at other times.

Around Halloween I'll play something horror themed. Whether it be a Resident Evil title or this years trendy Steam sale on Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.

In the summer I play strategy titles like Civ more. I justify lazing around playing games in the summer by thinking the game is historical and makes me think. Where as in the winter I give up and just shoot bitches and blow crap up.

NiGHTS on the Saturn checked the internal clock of the system and put in different things according to the season/holiday. Then they released Christmas NiGHTS, the best pack-in free game ever.

I don't have anything I associate with a particular season, though as somebody else mentioned, I tend to lean towards certain types of games at different points in the year; for instance, I don't want something that is really story heavy during November and December, as there may be long stretches where I'm out of town for holidays or something and I don't want to start forgetting it. Short-session games mostly for me in the near future. May be time to break out the old Katamari games again...

NiGHTS was great. Still one of my top three games of all time.

DS and I usually tag-team a horror game at the end of summer (longer days = more sunlight and less chance for zombies to pop out of the toaster oven, etc). And I always gravitate toward a good platformer in the spring - Sly games, J&Daxter, etc. But usually, like momgamer, my gaming choices are a function of how much time I have, and around the holidays, that drops off to zero.

If we get any accumulation of snow before Christmas, I get an overwhelming urge to play Parasite Eve.

OT, but I remember back in 2001 when I first bought my PS2 and hooked it up at my relatives house during Thanksgiving. It blew my mind that Pat Summerall said something like "it's thanksgiving day here at Lambeau Field" when I booted up Madden for the first time.

For some reason, it's also comforting to play the snow levels of the Donkey Kong Country games during the holiday season. Nothing like sliding off the edge due to ice while screaming bloody murder, hot cocoa and homemade cookies going everywhere.
