So, myself and a friend (and any other brave/foolhardy chums we can rope in) are planning a full 24 hours of sci-fi movie goodness. We've got a fairly solid* shortlist so far, but if there's some obvious misses/undiscovered gems that should go in, your suggestions would be very welcome.

*your mileage may vary

Shortlist so far:

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Alien
Blade Runner
Primer
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
The Terminator
Total Recall
Back to the Future
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Event Horizon
Planet of the Apes
Silent Running
Dark Star
Dark City
Twelve Monkeys
The Fly
The Thing
The Abyss
THX 1138
Tron

(oh yeah, as a general rule we're only permitted one movie from a franchise, so no multiple Star Wars films etc...)

Escape from New York, Children of Men, and maybe throw in some Mad Max. You can't go wrong with Mel Gibson. Wait, yes you can.

If it's one per franchise I'd take Aliens over Alien. Then again, Alien is the only good horror movie ever made, so that should count for something.
Gotta have David Lynch's Dune.
Johnny Mnemonic for cyberpunk awfulness and Strange Days for cyberpunk half-decentness.
And finally, The Fifth Element, for the hotness.

If you want to mix it up w/ non US films, I'd throw in Stalker or Solaris. Although Tarkovsky's reliance on the long shot and slow pacing might send the crowd to sleep if you showed it between 2-6 am.

As previously mentioned, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension is a must add. While we are talking about 80's sci-fi goodness, what about John-Boy Walton, George Peppard and Robert Vaughn remaking Seven Samurai (and all previous remakes of Seven Samurai) in Battle Beyond the Stars? John Sayles directs, James Horner does the music, and James Cameron does the art direction. All in an 80's camp version of the Magnificent Seven. I'm going to have to go find a copy and watch it again!

Kudos on Dark Star making your list. You could do a whole Sci-Fi marathon with just John Carpenter.

I didn't see Highlander suggested yet.

You could also throw in an MST3k flick for a change-up, how about Volume 4? Space Mutiny is particularly horrible (plus you get the beauty that is The Girl In Gold Boots).

Wrong. John Carpenter's The Thing. Receive a good natured dopeslap. I have to second Strekos' suggestion of Forbidden Planet. Shakespear in space. Best sci fi ever.

You could always go for A Boy And His Dog if people have seen Mad Max too many times.

Fantastic Planet, Starchaser: The Legend of Orin, and Dark Star

Fantastic Planet is going to be redone as a live action movie, but the cartoon is trippy. Dark Star is bad, just bad, love the beachball alien fight scene.

Event Horizon? No. Just no. Watch 2001, not some bastard stepchild version of it.

I second Starman, which I believe is John Carpenter's best film.

Yeah 2001 definitely needs to be on that list. I really enjoy 2010 too. Wrath of Khan is great, but I think The Undiscovered Country is the best of the Trek films.

Wow! Great choices only things i can think of at the moment that's not been added is The City of Lost Children. It's French and has subtitles but it's an awesome film. Keeping up with the French feel you could also check out Renaissance. It got great reviews at the festivals last year, but i've not had a chance to see it yet.

Then i'd suggest Ghost in the Shell. Opening scene with a bullet in the brainpan is a nice shot!
