WoW PvP: 2.3 Changes / Daily PvP Quests

So far with 2.3 there will be a few big shifts on the PvP side of things.

- S1 Arena Armor/Weapons can now be bought with Honor/Marks
- The maximum amount of Honor you can carry over to 2.3 is 75,000
- The maximum amount of Arena points you can carry over to 2.3 is 5,000
- Alterac Valley has been changed substantially to remove the 15 minute rush to the Generals, making it a less lucrative place to get easy Honor, but increasing the actual "PvP" - ie, fun.

But the biggest recent change...

- Daily Battleground Quests will reward 11g 99s and 4,192 Honor for winning. This was recently changed from 2,096 Honor on the test realms. Each day will be a random Battleground.

Edit: This was confirmed a *bug*, you now get 400 Honor.

What does this mean?

Theoretically you can get roughly 30,000 Honor in one week simply by doing one Battleground a day. Obviously that's the best case scenario, but regardless, it looks like Honor is going to be a lot easier to get. You still need the Arathi Basin, Warsong Gulch and other marks to purchase items however.

Why did they do this?

After grinding Battlegrounds for the past few months, my first thoughts were "great, all that grinding, and now it's easy honor for all!". But then I realized, that given the state of the Arenas, and how gear IS a big factor in your Arena Rating, what this will allow is a much easier ENTRY into the Arenas. No more getting whalloped in your PvE gear by those who have a lot more PvP gear.

There is a difference between S1, S2 and S3, but it's not as big as you'd think. By practically giving away S1 gear to those with a bit of patience, it's going to allow them to compete in the Arenas a lot more fairly.

Skill, Class Makeup (especially in 2v2 and 3v3) and Spec will still play a big role in your overall rating, but as far as gear is concerned, now everyone will have a fair chance. You are still going to have to work your ass off to get that 1850 and 2000 rating for S3 shoulders and weapons respectively.

Now, for the love of all that is holy Blizzard, release more than 1 new BG every year or so. We can only do the same 4 so many times..

It's off by a factor of 10. Battleground Daily quest bonus honor is supposed to be equivalent to 20 player kills at your level, ie 400 honor at level 70.

From 2000 to 4000 to 400 in a blink of an eye I guess the only way to keep up with changes is to refresh your browser every few minutes.

So now that the Honor train has left the junction once again, we're back to the good ol' grind to gear up before we are viable in the Arena. Only this time AV isn't a cash cow, and you're gonna have to work (time) a lot harder (longer) for it.

Of course now that I posted that, a blue will update the thread to 10,000 Honor.

I'm okay with 400 honor from a single daily BG quest. Thats the equivalent of about 30-minutes of work in a BG and will motivate me to run daily BG's, which I haven't been doing much of lately. Sure, it won't get me welfare arena gear but it will help.

4,000 honor seems a bit out there. Keep in mind that the S1 gear is pretty much equivalent to T3 or T4 epic gear (correct me if I am wrong, I haven't done the exact comparisons but I am sure that it is not far off) and is very viable as PVE gear. If you allow peeps to get T4 gear from casual play for just a few days, you really cheapen places like Kara, whose loot is now all but unecessary. I am a big fan of casual-friendly but if you remove the grind completely, the game will loose its appeal.

I agree, it shouldn't be easy. But it shouldn't take you a year or more to get gear to finally be viable to play the game (Arena) you want to, without being a complete joke. But it also shouldn't take a fresh 70 a couple weeks to get either. There needs to be a common ground where it seems like the time is a good payment for gear acquired.

Playing Battlegrounds and even sometimes Arena can be a LOT of fun. I love the dynamics of playing against other humans and classes. It's when you run the same Battleground a million times, where you feel you have to log in for Honor instead of Fun to be able to compete in Arenas.

I would sh*t my pants if Blizzard had the same amount of Battlegrounds maps that say, any other multiplayer game like Halo had. So much more variety...

It's just the whole 'slapping PvP game onto a PvE game thing that's still under the surface causing all kinds of problems - when you have people with no interest in PvP getting equivalant (to a degree) gear, that's an issue, and they are trying to alleviate it through personal ratings, etc.

It's still fun, but there's just a huge downpayment of time before you're able to start hanging with the resilience crowd..

Is it crazy that I wish gear was less a factor in Arenas, and that skill trumped all?

Not that I have the skill, either

No its not crazy but thats not really the game that WoW is designed to be. I'm torn about this because I was raised on FPS games where skill was the only factor and I LOVE those games. WoW clearly falls upon the carrot and stick gaming model and it works very well. I guess if you want skill-based games there are plenty of them out there you can play.

Same here. WoW is a lot of fun though, you just have to realize that like every other game it's also flawed. If it was based on skill alone, it probably wouldn't be played as much. No incentive to get new shinies. But, there is a lot of depth when it comes to PvP, and that's what keeps me interested. I could care less about gear that's going to be replaced come next expansion, but I realize my need for it to get past a certain point competetively.

I've actually started to like PvP but it's for a different reason. It's a nice change from raiding and the gear is powerful if you but I like it more for the challenge. Last week I had 224 HK's in one AV that lasted 40 minutes. There was a scrum on the bridge and I bet I spammed Seed of Corruption 250 times. It wasn't exactly skillful but it was entertaining. Maybe that's why I tend to play my Shaman in PvP more than my Lock. With the Lock it's just Dot Dot Dot...profit. To kill peeps with my Enhancement Shaman I've really got to work at it. There are no freebies.

Yeah, BGs are just fun chaos for me too. I didn't realize there was a Daily quest for them. Oops.

I had a similar experience today as you Bear. A long running AV where I got to build up some big numbers. It's the only place I ever look at the stats (I don't have UIs for it). I ended up being a deserter (so I could join an heroic SP) because it looked like it was going to push on way past 30 minutes, but when left I had over 450k healed (second place was only 75k ). About 10 minutes into the run, it broke down into a massive PvP scrum of about 40 players total slugging it out. It was not stop read-and-react fun.

Shade - no daily quest yet. ninja

I too enjoy BGs as a break from the serious, though I also enjoy a good Goodjer crew on Vent. We desperately need to do an all-Goodjer pre-made of one of the smallest BGs sometime.

Actually they could improve on AV massively if they gave you additional honor for defending your General. Rather than forcing both sides to zerg in a race to see who can kill the General first perhaps they could give honor based on the length of time a graveyard or tower is held?

BTW, the honor reward is now down to 400. Per a Blue post it was designed to be the equivalent of 20 Hk's.

Too bad Bear you are not on Rampage and on the "other" server/battlegroup....I LOVE shammy's and Lock's, so does Shermy..YUM

I do see your point in this. They have changes AV so much in the past year, and not really solved any problems with making it more challenging. Removing the vast majority of guards and removing the def and reason to collect scraps has forced the "General zerg" to be the only real way to play and win. 20 minute games are common now......a year ago, the 60 minute game was the norm and the 2 hour turtle game usually happened to me 3-4 times a week.

The key to victory is to not suck as bad as the other side.

Well MMO-champion has a nice write up of the prices for the S1 gear once it hits honor/marks.
Here are the weapons

The gear is here

That is a shame. I can't decide what I enjoy about hunters more? I'm torn between killing their pet slooooowly or eating the actual hunter when they're dead?

It's a quandry I tell you.

I must have a pitiful amount of honor to spend, because I'll have enough Arena points for the S2 Gavel long before I have the Honor for the S1 Gavel (which is good since S2 > S1).
