Christmas in New Orleans: NOLA S&T 2007
Over in the disturbing foods thread, mention was made regarding interest in having another NOLA S&T. In the interest of not derailing that thread for our own personal interests, I've taken the liberty of creating this one.
The location of choice is Drago's again, by default (it is oyster season after all), with, I suspect, an after-dinner beignet and some cafe-au-lait at Morning Call to top it off. Of course, this is by no means set in stone and suggestions are welcome.
As for timing, I casually proposed "late December" and Bennard, at least, seemed amenable to the idea. At the moment, I know that we'll be in town for Christmas, but I haven't selected my vacation days yet so I have some flexibility.
So, is there anyone else interested in getting together in New Orleans in about two months?

I think we should try for Boxing Day again. The adult gathering was a nice denouement for me after the very child oriented day of gifting and eating. But that's just me. I'm just one person. And Christmas is on a Tuesday and I have a full day's drive to get home. At which point, we might as well stay for New Years and find a party to crash together.
Maybe Sunday before Christmas this year. But that's the evening of carols in Jackson Square. We could carol and then hit a yummy spot in the Quarter...followed by beignets and chickory. Which works out if everyone parks behind the river wall (and no one listens to me sing).
Or Saturday before Christmas. We could go to Celebration in the Oaks and take a carriage together (if we're not too many people) and then have dinner at Lulu's. If I'm not driving across Texas that day.
I hesitate to suggest we gather on Christmas Eve or Christmas night, but I suspect both are viable possibilities. I don't know about getting into Drago's those evenings.
Who's going to be in town? Expatriots unite! O, and pre- Happy Birthday, Chiggie.

Unfortunately, Kat and I will not be in NOLA for Xmas this year - we've decided that our relatives get enough of our vacation time, and are going skiing. However, we will be traveling down sometime early next year, and hope we can meet up with the crew again. Last time was incredibly fun, and I want to do it again.
I'll be in town for Christmas. I'll probably be leaving town a couple of days after Christmas, though. So the best time for me would either be in the days leading up to Christmas, or else on the 26th like last year.
Drago's was a good time last year, to be sure, though it was quite crowded and noisy. These circumstances made group conversation difficult. But then, that problem was largely offset by the proximity of Morning Call for beignets afterward. So it's a wash.
I'd be open to a rendezvous in the Vieux Carré, or a return to Drago's, or really anything else for that matter.

Well, although my interest has not diminished, the physical reality of me being there has. I spoke with the wife last night, and she informed me that she's scheduled to work over Christmas, which means we won't be down south as I had thought. Still, I may be able to talk her into a New Years/Anniversary trip down to the N.O. I'll watch and see for a date, but count me out as of now.
EDIT: Just wanted to note that there is a Drago's open downtown now, in the Riverfront Hilton. That may or may not be more accessible than the Metairie one, but would leave open some other opportunities for the after-party.

Money will ultimately determine our involvement. We've become fond of travel and that can take its toll. As far as my own interest, I see no reason that we all shouldn't meet every year. Last time was great even though we retired early. Perhaps the allure of quiet conversation will keep us out in the wee hours if we are able to go this holiday season.
And, thank you, Quicksilver, for the birthday wishes. I am always surprised when other people remember my birthday, or any birthday, since I forget the concept exists for most of the year.

Hmm. That last post was a little too eloquent. Doesn't quite fit the avatar.
Let's try again.
Nawlens! WOOOOOO!!!

I'm still here, and I'm down with whatever. Wouldn't mind more downtown, less Metairie, but that's because I've slowly developed an aversion to ever crossing beneath the highways and therefore leaving the city. Civilization? Who needs it.

As kind of an odd coincidence my wife and I will be there for New Years. Not Christmas day, nor a couple days after. But New Years. I think like the 28th to January 1st.

My taking a new job at UNO has given me the opportunity to have a block of vacation of almost 2 weeks, which is something I haven't had in years. That means if I decide to take a road trip this Christmas, I'll be out of town from around the 20th to the 2nd.
Sadness. It looks like we all have conflicting designs.

Looks like our travel days will be Dec 22 - 30. The caroling in Jackson Square is going to be on the 16th this year, so that's right out.
unntrlaffinity, have fun on your travels. We'll try not to break the city while you're off gallivanting.
Who's in? I suppose we are close enough now to actually make a plan. The evenings of the 23rd, 26th, and 28th all work well for us, and we're open to other options.

I'm always late to find out about these things, but anyone doing the NOLA Santacon on Saturday?
"YOU SPOIL, YOU GET SPOILED! AAAAHAHAHAHAHA!"
Mr. affinity, I fear you are the last of the GWJ residing in NOLA. Bring the flag out when you leave, OK? But first, go carol in Jackson Square for me on Sunday night. They start promptly at 7pm.

I thought there was an awful echo in here. Go on, enjoy your traitorous holiday celebrations!

Bad news on my end. I just found out this morning that next semester I'll be teaching my own class for the first time. That's very exciting, and is in itself good news. But it also means that I've got about two weeks to select my texts, craft a syllabus, and go through the appropriate bureaucratic motions. So I'm chopping my vacation time in NOLA to just a few days. I'm afraid I won't have time for a Slap & Tickle this year.
