Some good news coming out from EA! Burnout will be released on Jan 22, 2008... but it gets better!

Demo will be released in December!

Electronic Arts will be giving gamers the keys to Paradise City early next year, as the publisher today announced that Criterion Games' wreckless PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 racer Burnout Paradise will arrive in North American stores January 22. The European relase date has not yet been confirmed.

Eager gamers who can't wait for the New Year to check out the first open-world installment in Criterion's long-running series will be able to grab a glimpse of what the game offers a little early. EA is planning to release downloadable demos for both versions of the game in December.

The demo will include a look at the game's new stunt mode, as well as the chance to race through the game's streets in search of the fastest route to a set destination. Gamers will also get to check out the new multiplayer emphasis by competing in three challenges online, or make use of the system's camera peripherals to see the look on the face of a rival racer being rubbed into a guardrail.

Personally... I know I will buy it. I've been a fan of the series since the first. With that said, I'm kind not as excited as I used to be... I guess it's due to all the games coming out recently.

Next gen Burnout sounds awesome to me...it really sounds like they've thought about how to extend this game into the new generation of hardware, rather than making another prettier rehash. I'm excited about this game, even though I know I'll suck. Hard.

My wife was sad they took out the crash events, but it is still my understanding that you can kind of start your own crash event ANYWHERE. Every preview/trailer I've seen has just increased my interest level for this game.

I absolutely loved and played the hell out of Burnout 1 and 2. For some reason I just couldn't get into the last one or two that came out, and I even bought the PSP version.

They are still slick and awesome games, so I'm not sure why the series doesn't have me as pumped anymore. I will most definitely pick this up, so I'm hoping to rekindle some of the old school vibes.

One thing I wish they would bring back to Burnout... is the survival mode from Burnout 1! So much fun...

Oh yeah.. the memories

Survival mode was pretty kick ass from what I remember.. intense..

I think I liked it better when you *wanted* to avoid the crashes instead of *wanting* to cause them.

I stumbled onto the Criterion CrashFM podcast the other day, and with each episode my anticipation for this game grows.

http://www.criteriongames.com/podcast/

As a PS3 owner, I'm particularly happy (relieved) to know that the PS3 was the lead development platform and that 60 fps is, in the minds of the developers, a requirement of next-gen gaming.

I haven't bought a retail PS3 game yet. Came close with Ratchet & Clank and Assassin's Creed but rented instead, and have been waiting patiently for Orange Box, though I'm a bit concerned that it might be another crappy 360 port based on the previews. Burnout Paradise may well end up being the first game I finally buy for the machine. 60 fps and no load times? Sold.

The sickest part of this game for me is personal; in the trailers, an El Camino is present. My Dad had an El Camino. I did a bootlegger one icy December evening lo about 15 years ago into a parking spot, with cars parked fore and aft, completely by accident after losing control on an icy, city road with 2 friends packed into the 2-seater El Camino with me. I st you not.

Can't wait to play this game. I had so much fun with Test Drive Unlimited and Burnout 3, and this looks to combine the best of both games. The only thing I wish were in it is the random addition of public players. In TDU you would drive around and random people near you would just pop into your game. Sometimes this was annoying but usually it was a welcome bit of randomness.

Demo has a release date!

TeamXbox wrote:
Following last month's announcement of the game's release date and confirmation of a pre-release demo, Criterion Games now announced the date this demo will hit Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.

On December 13, 2007, EA will release a playable demo of the fifth installment in the Burnout series, giving players license to wreak havoc in Paradise City, the ultimate racing battleground, with a massive infrastructure of traffic-heavy roads to abuse.

Gone is the need to jump in and out of menus and aimlessly search for fun like many open world games; in Burnout 5, every inch of the world is built to deliver heart-stopping Burnout-style gameplay. Every intersection is a potential crash junction and every alleyway is an opportunity to rack up moving violations.

Sweet!

Incidentally, this is the first game where I've actually been torn as to which system to buy it for. Obviously, the 360 would be preferable since it actually has an online community that works. However, if it truly is much better from a technical standpoint on the PS3, well, I don't really know. So anyway, I'm very glad that the demo will be available on both systems this far in advance of the game's release -- it will give me plenty of time to do a side by side comparison to see just how serious the technical differences really are.

Criterion has been very vocal about the PS3 being the lead SKU for this game, and early buzz was that the PS3 version looked much better as a result. On the latest 1up Yours podcast they did say that the 360 version was looking much better than the last time the saw it, which is promising, but still I'll be glad to be able to make the comparison for myself.

(I guess the other factor here is that Luna has really enjoyed the previous Burnout games, so if she's going to want to play multiplayer stuff with me, it'll be 360 no matter what -- after all, split screen is for suckers and we'd be really stupid to own more than one PS3.)

It's a trick. Get an axe.

Its lead development platform is the PS3 and Shane Bettenhausen from the 1up yours podcast says that the PS3 version looks better. Obviously not the most unbiased of opinions but it is worth looking into. It would be understandable for a pre-release of the PS3 version to look better because the code is being done there first but it will be interesting to see if there are any differences in the final release.

Actually, from 1up Yours Podcast last Friday, they mentioned that the latest build they have -- Xbox 360 and PS3 versions look almost identical. I figure it will be the same situation as with COD4... very, very, ...very minor differences.

Thanks for the info guys. Anyway, my RealLife(tm) buddies don't have PS3's and damn that SIXAXIS controller sucks so the choice is pretty simple, but I'd be disappointed if the 360 version ended up being inferior. I think I'd have to kill a few kittens in protest.

Good to hear. I hadn't listened to the latest one, but was referring to the one from about a month ago. Shane was making it clear that he thought the PS3 version was visually superior. I usually take the stuff he says with a grain of salt anyways.

Early impression.

Well, it's definitly Burnout, it looks great and the speed is awesome. The DJ, however, must die. Holding down the trigger to start the car is a nice touch. I did try some high speed traffic checking, it worked fairly well until I ended up destroying my car, so it looks like they tweaked that. The map for the race is definitly made for an HDTV, and the destination of the race on your compass is fairly small as well. The moronic DJ said "Read the signs to find out where to go in the race"... again, this demands a huge TV or an HDTV. Interesting idle animation/cut scenes.

*edit* There is something missing, I just can't place my finger on it.

Yes. From what I've read, the demo has most of the game modes from the full game but is locked down to a small portion of the city.

It feels like I'm playing Need For Speed: Most Wanted, but with Burnout look and physics. The text issue that is present with Dead Rising is fairly bad, the HUD is very involved. Pulling up to intersections has street name signs pop up near the top, the compass, the muddy map on the bottom right. The gameplay is there and it looks really good, I guess it will just require map memorization and watching out for stopped or slow traffic.

I'm going to grab the demo from both the 360 and PS3, just to see if there's a difference.

Likewise, by the way.

Although as long as the multiplayer is good, the PS3 version will have to look much better for me to buy that one, since Luna and I do not play split screen when it is not absolutely necessary.
