Caught this article on Slashdot about certain areas being eligible to upgrade to a 20mb upstream and downstream connection.

I called up and found out I was eligible. Upgrade should be ready by the time I get home from work today.

I wish FiOS would be available in my area... because the only option I have is RR and it's absolute cr*p. At the time I got RR I was told that I would get 5mbps, well at it best it top out at 2mbps(1.5 on average)... but at the time I use it (between 7pm til 12am), it's more like 128kbps(nope, I'm not kidding.) Last month I got a letter from TW telling me that they bump me up to 10-12Mbps... for free... back in July. Well, I'm still waiting to get to 1mbps!

I ran home for lunch and ran a few tests on speakeasy.net
3 tests all to the NY test center

Test 1
Download Speed: 19735 kbps (2466.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 15689 kbps (1961.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Test 2
Download Speed: 20165 kbps (2520.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 7751 kbps (968.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Test 3
Download Speed: 19944 kbps (2493 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 15374 kbps (1921.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

I wasnt expecting a full 20mb upload, as when I was supposed to have 5mb it was more like 2.5. Im happy with the results. Not sure what happened on that middle one with upload speeds. Thats odd. Every other test I've run comes back in the 14-16mb upload range except that one. Hopefully its just an anomaly.

I was just thinking it had been a while since I'd seen Verizon make another competitive based increased in their residential speeds. They bumped service in MA to 20/5 last year from 15/2. According to the article the 20/20 isn't available in MA but I might call anyway if I get a chance just to see what they say.

Regardless, I can't complain about the 20/5 service - it's fantastic.

I can't get ANY of the FIOS service offerings. In my area it's DSL or TWC, which tops out at 8Mb down / 512k up. Arg.

No kidding. At least you have more than one option. Where I am, a one-town podunk cable monopoly is the only gig around. I believe their data center looks like:

I can get 10/1 cable here in Canada. 25/1 cable if I wanted to cough up for it (I don't).

20/20 would be so niaaaceee.

I live practically downtown here in Charleston -just over the bridge in James Island- and I can only get Comcast or Knology (Which leases service from comcast, so it's the same thing). I can't get DSL... I'm at 2233 on the street and the last house they offer it at is 2217, 4 houses down...

Getting internet access down here is a real pain in the ass.

I get 15/1 cable here in Monterey, though according to Comcast my service should be 6/768kb. Speed test comparisons indicate everyone in the area is getting similar performance.

But lord, I'd kill everyone else in this thread in order to get FIOS.

I'm in the same boat as Baggachipz. Small town telephone monopoly. No cable internet, only 3/512 DSL. I shouldn't complain though, before I moved last year I was on 128k ISDN.

You're most likely seeing their "PowerBoost" in action. You get basically uncapped bandwidth for the first 10MB of a file supposedly. I'm paying for the Comcast 8Mb/768kb package, the upgrade over the 6Mb/384kb here, and I see somewhere between 8-10Mb sustained down, and about 1Mb sustained upload.

I've had this for about a month now. Its about $10 more than I had been paying a month, but I'm definitely keeping it. My connection has been solid, never have any hosting issues and Im consistently 19-20mb down and 15-17mb up.

After being one of the first with FIOS when I lived in the 'burbs and now being denied for over a year and a half... it was a good day today to see the Verizon trucks in full force running Fiber Optic everywhere in my town.. Should be ~1-2 months before its ready to roll.

Getting FIOS when we get back from vacation. We decided to cancel our cable TV last week. We have been happy going cable-free, just watching shows on DVD or recorded on Tivo via the HD Antenna. We went to cancel and they charged us $12 to cancel and upped our Internet cost to $55 while downgrading our speed by 2MB/S. I told the lady at the counter that if they wanted to do the exact opposite of trying to find a way to keep us, they just accomplished it.

We went home that afternoon and signed up for FIOS. First month free, $35/month for the next 6 months, $45/month after that. Plus a $20 Target gift card, free modem rental and free installation. Comcast will be shut off finally in a couple weeks.

How much is the 20MB/s service? I can't imagine needing more than we have since the 360 ran great over 6MB/s. But I'll have to see how it goes.

So if Verizon isn't the local phone carrier does that mean Verizon won't bring FIOS service to the area? I ask because here your options are Cincinnati Bell, Cincinnati Bell, and... Cincinnati Bell.

As for Internet.. I'm still stuck on 1.5/768 DSL, also from Cincinnati Bell. There's Insight Cable but the reliability around here is horrid. Friend of mine has it and rarely has a couple weeks go by without at least one day with his connection on the fritz.

Last Friday a Verizon insider informed us that the company would be expanding their symmetrical FiOS offering into additional areas starting today. The tier has been available in only the NY/NJ/CT tri-state region since October 23.

PA, ME, DE, MD, NH, SC, TX, OR, IN, CA, VA and WA users will be able to order symmetrical 15Mbps for for $64.99 monthly with a one year contract. Customers in MA, FL and RI will get symmetrical 20Mbps for $64.99 monthly with a one year contract. These prices are only if you bundle voice -- standalone is $5 more per month.

While Verizon wouldn't confirm or deny to us that the launch was today, users in our forums say they're able to order the symmetrical service in a number of markets, and it has started showing up on Verizon's website (pdf image grab). We'd assume that an official announcement should be coming shortly from the folks at Verizon, though they may be thinking the launch will generate better PR after the holiday.

Also this needs to be in Tech.
