Portal: The Flash Version

Portal: The Flash Version is a clever two-dimensional take on Valve's puzzle masterpiece. As in the original Portal, you play as a hapless, orange-jumpsuited test subject forced to negotiate a series of rooms, assisted by a device that allows you to place interconnected portals on various surfaces. Each room (there are 40 total) features a unique arrangement of walls, switches, and gates, plus lethal elements like energy balls and automated turrets.

Unlike its predecessor, Portal TFV won't blow your mind. It begins and ends in white-walled, obstacle-filled experiment rooms, and it lacks the absurd humor and emergent story that make Portal so incredible. As a 2-D flash puzzler, though, it's superb, and it does an admirable job of recreating some of the original game's challenges. If you're looking for a casual Portal fix, you won't be disappointed.

Much thanks to CyberTrick, who suggested Portal: TFV for this week's Act Casual selection. If you'd like to nominate a game for Act Casual, email your suggestion to contact@gamerswithjobs.com.

If you're into this game you might want to check out WeCreateStuff's Portal TFV forums, where you can find console commands, walkthroughs (including videos), Easter egg hints, and other cool stuff.

And if you haven't yet played the original Portal, do so immediately.

IIRC, this came out the day of (if not before) the release of Portal. I ended up getting pretty far into it until I nearly finished this long exhausting level that I had had a hard time with, only to fall into a hole on my way out the door... couple seconds later that tab was closed for good.

I've had the same experience and combined with the clunky controls I doubt I'll ever play this game again.

There is cake. It just isn't nearly as tasty.

I died on Level 9. Twice. Screen went red and everything.

Despite there being no conceivable way for death to occur!
