I had forgotten all about this in the midst of the current insane bounty of excellent FPS gaming. Is anyone else looking forward to punishing their rig with this game? I know I won't be getting all the bells and whistles, but I am curious to see how well it scales.

I hope it runs better than the MP beta does. I heard that the beta apparently uses a very old engine version and I hope that's true cause otherwise the requirements they've stated for the game are just untrue.

Yeah I don't think this'll run on my box. I mean, I'm interested, but it can wait. Judging from the interviews it'll be at least a year before affordable systems can run this decently.

I've been looking forward to this for a while now. I was very close to subscribing to fileplanet to get access to the beta but then I came to my senses . I'm cautiously optimistic that it will run decently on my rig.

This site has screenshots of how it should look at low, medium high and very high settings. I think I'll be happy if I can run it at medium.

Usually I don't download demos of a game I already plan on getting, especially since I like saving the entire experience, including the tutorial and opening scene, to my first playthrough. I'll only try out the demo if I have mixed feelings on it.

This one is the exception, though, because I want to see how good it'll look on my system, seeing as how this is another one of those games that'll play optimally on a computer that doesn't exist yet. (Why do companies do this? Did Doom 3 sales increase dramatically when, two years after it's release, there was finally a video card that could handle it on the highest settings?)

My computer is pretty new, but I'm worried because the two games I have tried with DX10 turned on, Lost Planet and World of Conflict, cut my framerate nearly in half with the differences not being that impressive. Seeing as how all the comparison screenshots and videos make it look like the differences are actually going to be significant, I worry if the game will choke under the weight.

Thanks for the link, that's interesting. Looking at the system requirements on the official site, it looks like I am sitting squarely at the recommended specs. Maybe it will run halfway decently after all.

Far Cry was that way too. I spent many hours of trial and error massaging my old Athlon XP 2600+/9800 Pro rig to wring the highest playable settings out of that game. When I came back to it on my current rig, which allowed me to run it at max detail, I was amazed at how well the visuals still hold up today. I guess that's one benefit of a game that's a technical tour de force: it ages well.

I agree that it's impressive to play a game made three years ago and have it not look as dated as it would on a console. It just seems like a negative experience for both the customer (at a time when PC gaming is on the defensive, you feel defeated when you spend the dough on a cutting edge system and still have to turn the settings down from what the trailers had) and the developer (you're basically admitting that the way to play the game in it's optimum form is two years later out of the bargain bin).

Regardless, if I can play it on moderately high settings in DX10 with at least some antialiasing on, I'll be happy.

I wonder if they've done some work to make sure it doesn't puke courtesy of the 2GB process limit. LoTRO would frequently "run out of memory" on me at 1920x1200 w/high res textures and everything cranked to the max.

I sure hope the demo blows for my own sake, I don't need anything twisting my rubber arm to get a 2nd 8800GTX

Now if it really really doesn't blow, I might even have to whip out the Vista disc and take the plunge down the rabbit hole for DX10!

I finally did that for World in Conflict and for a preemptive strike with Crysis. Give it a shot, I've been running Vista happily for about a month now. I tossed in a CPU upgrade and its quite a different experience with the OS than the one I had at launch when I rolled back to XP within a week.

I've been dual-booting Vista for a month now too for the same reason, and I'm strongly considering making the entire switch. So far I've had none of the problems other people have encountered and I really love the way it works.

Yep. I've heard the same, and it gives me some hope. The demo will make or break my purchase.

Really looking forward to it. Even debating selling my Wii to afford a Mobo/CPU/Ram upgrade...so many great PC games coming out this fall and next year...and only a few quality Wii titles.

I haven't been looking forward to this one much, strangely. Of course, I never really got into Far Cry, either.

Don't feel too bad, it was more of an engine than a game. So far I've seen no indications that this will be any different.

I played the multiplayer beta, I wasn't too interested in it though. I'm looking forward to the demo, it might change my mind about buying the game.

Depends on which version of the beta you played. According to... what I've heard from people, who may or may not be in the know ahem..., the two most recent updates contained a number of tweaks. The performance in the current version should be close to the results you'd get with the final build.

Also keep in mind that AI - not present in the MP beta - will eat a hefty amount of CPU time, too. You don't want 20 soldiers trying to chase you down at once, or so I've been told...

Yeah, it did feel kinda like BF but with added view distance and foliage. I liked the capture system where you need to capture a factory before being able to build a tank. I do love the fact that you can jump out of a moving vehicle, and that it shoot away from you at high speed unlike BF2, where a bail would end up in the vehicle slowing down fast.

In all, I wasn't too impressed by it. The added suit features are fun, but not game changing. The gameplay is ok, but also nothing impressive. Also the map was pretty big, and you can capture any point on the map, so some games end up in chasing each other around on the map instead of full scale battles. I like battles more.

I think this game will have a pretty cool SP experience. At least until you meet the aliens, I still fear it will become like the mutants from Far Cry. I do look forward to play around with the suit and the soldiers.

I don't watch, I interact!

I really don't care about another generic FPS. Crysis was never a bleep on my radar.

Generic? Generic?! I'll have you know, sir, that the trees fall down in a realistic manner and there are lots of shadows.

If there's an update newer than Beta 3, I'll have to look for it. I'm running Beta 3 which is far worse than 2 was.

It's so odd that they won't let you try the software designed to help you make a purchase decision early until you promise to buy the game. Same goes for pre-order "beta access" and the like.
