Best way to read forums?
Monday, October 22nd, 2007 - 9:03am
Hi there everyone
Sbject says it all really: What is the best way to read forums? Not just the GWJ forums, but forums in general.
My problem with forums are that there is just too much to read on it! Especially if you are at a new place. That takes up waaaay too much time.
Does anyone know whether you can put forum stuff in an RSS feed? Or maybe send posts by email automatically? Because between emails, RSS feeds and forum posts it just gets too much! Aaaaarggghh!
I really want to be part of this community, and it seems the forums is the main way to be a part, its just a bit cumbersome (for me)
So, anyone got any tips to keep my sanity?
Regards
Samuel

Don't worry so much about reading forums?
Honestly, just use common sense and read what is interesting to you. I don't really know how to explain it other than "do what you wanna do." No one is going to give you a test on what was said later.
Most of us kind of group off into little cliques on the boards anyway, so I don't imagine there are a lot of people who read everything other than the moderators. Even they miss some stuff sometimes.

Stick to the first page. If older stuff becomes relevant, someone will link to it.

The front page is a good suggestion but you'll have to do searches for memes and expressions that are in-house
e.g. " I'd weiner bomb that oogba"
Other meme's like this one get lost as newer posters arrive and evolve the community
Talk about a blast from the past. Loved that thread.

And man that dog looks like he's having a good time, but that monkey is f*cking into it. This isn't his recreation; this is his life and he knows it in a way I will never know anything. --Danjo Olivaw
Yeah, it's like high school all over again. They come around and steal your lunch money while making fun of how you dress.
Don't even ask what wordsmythe does with his finger, or about Taco in general. . .
Follow the front page, and use the track page to keep tabs on threads you posted in.
Or post and abandon it. It's supposed to be fun, not work.

How can you let an individual, a human being, stress out and suffer on how to keep up with all the knowledge churn in these forums like this? Have you no compassion?
For his own good, I recommend banning him for Code of Conduct(CoC) Article Eight Violation. Taking a loose interpretation of The Code and an even looser reading of this post's theme, this is yet another "I'm new" message in disguise.
Oh and no soup for any of you for not pointing this out sooner.

Except wordsmythe, he reads every thread.... twice. Also, every third post is his (and can thusly be ignored safely).

Better let boogle know. Oh, and get him a fresh notebook.

I tried RSS with these forums but you only get the first item posted. You don't get any of the threads within that posting. It gives you an idea of the topic and you can click the link to read the rest of the posts. But since the bastages turned off GWJ at work I can't read the whole thread. A good rss reader is Google Reader.
Still looking for a way to download new posts or read the forums offline in my cubicle.
When posting be sure to use lots of extra periods and commas,,..,, mipsell evrethnig or...
just make your sentances run on forever having no structure whatsoever don't stop to capatilize anything or ceck you speling just type as fast as you can so sombody else dosn't post before you
Cause it gives wordsmythe a reason to live.
Also when in doubt insult baggas mom...
That is all.

I am thoroughly dissapointed. I expected this response much faster in this thread.

I just lost a half hour of my life reading the "box" thread. That box was full of PROCRASTINATION. Evil.
My suggestion is to click on the "Mark all threads as read" button and start fresh. That being said, any other "Greatest Hits" threads out there?

I speak what everyone else thinks. They're afraid that people will know they freeball GWJ.

I skip a lot of things. I'm also narcissistic so I only read threads that I've posted in. Every other thread is inferior
.
Anything that KT and Mex have posted in is probably well worth reading.

I didn't even open the site at work yesterday. Today it's just for lunch breaks. (I know, I'm scared too.

I just wanted to post this:

How to best read the forums is much like the age old question:
"How does a dentist clean a hippo's teeth?"
Answer: Very carefully.

Ideally, both.
The best way to view a forum safely is by making a pinhole viewer. Here are some instructions to make your own.
1. Take two sheets of cardboard, and make a pin-hole in one.
2. Stand with your back to the forum, and hold both sheets up, with the hole facing towards the forum.
3. Experiment by holding the sheets at different distances apart until you see an image of the forum appearing on the second sheet.
Pistols for two and coffee for one.
