October 22nd - 26th
It seems odd to say with a number of reasonably meaningful games coming out, but this may be another good week to sit on your wallet and prepare yourself for November. What would be a big week in, say, June is almost a lull in the action for the industry in October. That said, there are a number of titles this week that will seem completely irresistible to some, like a new Phoenix Wright DS game, an expansion for Age of Empires III and the intriguing Eye of Judgment, but our game of the week goes to what may arguably be the strongest release for the PS3 in what has been a depressingly weak year. With a strong demo and a consistently reliable franchise, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction may not alone be reason enough to buy a Playstation 3, but if you happen to already have one, it's hard to turn down, so it picks up a GoTW nod.
A film trend I don't get is torture porn like Saw and Hostel. Despite my distaste on the point, both of those franchises are releasing director's cuts of their gory schlock to what must be dozens of anxious malcontents. Also, Meet The Robinsons hits DVD to remind us all of why Disney desperately needs Pixar. More DVDs here.

I'm going to rent Conan, I'm going to rent it hard.
Certis beat me to it. - Elysium
I'll be trading my rental of Katamari for Ace Combat so I can complain about that.

I totally forgot about Ace Combat! I'm screwed.
- Clive Barker's Jericho
- Ratchet & Clank
- Disgaea Afternoon of Darkness
- Conan
- Ace Combat 6

Ratchet, Castlevania, and maybe Disgaea for me.
Ace Combat I just don't see the appeal of. I played the demo and, well, it seems to hit that boring middle space between exciting arcade action and tense realism, lacking both the excitement and the tension.

Ace Combat & Ratchet & Clank Future = Day One Buys
Conan = Absolute rental.
Jericho = Definitely rent. Maybe buy if over 10 hours. On 360 unfortunately cause the demo ran like dog poo on my machine (and it really shouldn't have.)
Funny story (well not really for them I guess) regarding the PS3 version too. I always download from PSN way faster than Live so I decided to try the PS3 demo to see how console controls were. The demo downloaded, I ran it 3 times and couldn't begin the game because pressing Start didn't work! True story. 360 and PC demos started fine.
Ace Combat online dogfighting for great justice!

You also neglected to mention Zack and Wiki Search for Barbaros' Treasure on Wii from Capcom. And before you go dismissing it by its title and art style the game is unique in that it is a level based puzzle game that uses the Wii remote well and borrows from point and click adventure games. Most critics who have had hands on time speak positively of it. If you have the time next week you may want to check on reviews. I am going to rent it as I am too broke to buy anything right now.
I'll be playing Jericho for free on Gametap. weeee
Me neither, man. "Torture porn" is a perfect description. When Saw 1 came out I was unpleasantly surprised at how everyone thought that movie was somehow fresh and entertaining, while a movie like "Seven" makes it look like a poorly written high school play.

Well, I kind of enjoy some of the toture porn. I think the problem you are having, though, is comparing to quality films, like Seven, when these films are really filling the void we have from the lack of slasher movies like Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. Compared to these films, Saw and Hostel are fine. In fact, compared to those films, I think the new breed of torture porn are much better films.
For a really cool look at how society dictates the kind of horror films we get, you should really check out the IFC doc, "American Nightmare" that covers Horror films from the 60's through the 70's. While toture porn is written and spoke of as a new breed of film, it is really just the return of the genre that got its start in the 70's. I think if you were to watch this doc, you may understand, and maybe appreciate this extreme genre of horror film. You may not enjoy the genre, but it may make more sense to you than it does now.

Front Mission DS is out this week.
If I had a PS3 I would totally buy Ratchet And Clank.
Jericho, Painkiller and Castlevania for me.
I liked first Painkiller so i cant imagine second one to be any worse.
Painkiller is following in the Serious Sam footsteps really. Unknown company of eastern european hacks come up with utterly unintelligent game that brilliantly works. (Serious Sam 2 was cack, btw. I'm sriously liked 1st and 2nd encouters.) If it moves - shoot it. If it doesnt move - shoot it anyway.

I'm with shihonage. And the old-school slasher pics never really appealed to me either.

Very true. Of course horror isn't for everyone, but these type of films sell. The first Saw i thought had a good story, but some of the acting and editing was a bit underwhelming. The main thing is that it made money and that's end-all, be-all result for Hollywood proper. So any script that had plenty of gore and girls in various states of undress were greenlit into production.

Wait...R&C is supposed to come out tomorrow? My store is listing it to come out on the 30th. Man, if I can get this tomorrow I'm going to have to go find a Microplay location...

Man, what a week to lose my internship..
Yet even then we ran like the wind,
whilst our laughter echoed under cerulean skies...
Really, I never liked them either. I usually prefer good ghost stories to to these violent films. But some of these films have gotten much better than they are given credit for. Rob Zombie's "The Devil's Rejects" was a great flick. The movie it was a sequel to, "House of 1000 Corpses" was not nearly as good, but after watching that "American Nightmare" doc, you could see all of the influences at work in his films. He's doing much more than just regurgitating old films, but is really tapping into this generations boogiemen.
Of course, these films are not for everyone. I just thought Elysium's comments about these films being for "dozens of anxious malcontents" was a bit unfair. The same could be said about many graphic novels as well. Heck, the same is said about videogames everyday.

King of Fighters XI

Well I'm pretty pissed now. I blew through my service calls today cause I was so stoked to pick up R&C and AC6 and I got neither. At both my Best Buy and the Microplay location I checked, Ace Combat 6 has been suddenly delayed two days and R&C won't be out until the 30th. I don't know what that's about but yeah...sucks.

Blew off work on a Tuesday for games? You live in Canada, you should know better! Ratchet & Clank are scheduled for the 30th in most systems, but it's shipping early. I think some folks in the States are already seeing copies.

I can't believe Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles didn't even get a mention on the front page. It's a gorgeous looking remake of the most highly sought after Castlevania game to never hit the United States, and it comes with the original Rondo of Blood and a tweaked Symphony of the Night (one of the best sidescrollers of all time) as a bonus. On top of that, it's palatably priced at only $29.99.

Can't believe no one has pointed out the third and final season of Veronica Mars was also released this week. I'd have never heard of or even given this show a chance if it weren't for GWJ's front page on it a year or so ago. (Too lazy to look for the article for a link.)
Oh, and I was lucky enough yesterday to get one of the new Phoenix Wright games "right out of the shipping container" at a GameStop.
