Summary: Halo 3 sold a ton of units. The people who predicted it wouldn't move hardware were mistaken. Wii is still a juggernaut. Metroid Prime 3 could have used some better marketing. PS3 is doomed.

I don't know, that's maybe what, 200,000 units more than usual? Out of 3.3 million in software sales? That a very small bump when you look at the percentages. I'd say those that predicted that a majority of Halo 3 buyers would already have the system were right.
Tony Hawk finally has some competition!
That just feels good to read.
I'll be interested to see the worldwide numbers. They need more than this to offset the marketing budget, I think.

Well, your phrasing is a bit different there, chief.
Did a majority of Halo 3 buyers already have the system? Clearly. Did Halo 3 push 360 sales? Yes, it approximately doubled the 360's monthly average. So, like, we're both right!

I really expected more 360 hardware to be sold. I knew at least a couple people waiting for Halo to drop before picking up a console, though none of them actually did, sadly.

I did, picked up an elite. Have been spending as much time with Arcade as with Halo 3.

True, but at the same time, Halo's a game with long legs, not just first-month sales. I expect it will be a healthy boost for 360 sales throughout the holiday sales season.

That's nice for the game, but it'll hardly boost the hardware sales in the long run. Halo 2 set the previous records, but overall it didn't set the hardware sales on fire on the months after the launch.
The overwhelming positve reviews of Halo 3 should benefit 360 sales this holiday season. Seriously, what game will be putting kids in a postion to beg their parents for a PS3 this year? The trick is, how many parents, and PS2 (and to a much lesser degree, Xbox owners) owners decided to wait and see on the 360 vs. PS3?
What happens to the PS3 if it is destroyed in sales thoughout the entire holiday season? Is there any hope for developers still making commitments tp the PS3?
I used to miss the PS3 haterade thread. But I have now realized we get a new one every month!

FWIW, this is a 5 week month, so you'd expect it to be 25% larger than usual (100 goes to 125)

Sure, but Halo didn't drop until the 25th of September.

Yeah, wasn't talkin' Halo, I meant the "golly look at the phat 360 numbers" part of things. 3 Gajillion of anything in 12 days is impressive. The decline in PS3 sales is even more striking when you consider the 5 week thing.

So instead the kids will be begging their parents to buy them an Xbox 360 so they can play Halo?
Halo 3 is rated M.
I seriously hope any parent buying this for a child would think twice about it.

The price drop and the extra week included in the September NPD (compared to August) are more responsible for the hardware bump than Halo 3. Did more people buy a 360 because of Halo 3, yes. But enough to say that Halo 3 is a hardware driver, I'm not so sure. I think if 360 sales stay above 400,000 next month (this month) we can say Halo 3 is a hardware driver.
Nintendo needs to start advertising their core games, Metroid should sell better based on the quality of the title. They are doing no promotion for BWii which releases next week.
The Wii is having everybodies lunch but I am interested to see how GHIII performs on the platform.

Eh, Halo doesn't do very much to earn its rating. Outside of the occasional space marine cursing, it's a fairly fantastical kind of violence. When I played through the first game with my seven year old cousin I explained, "It's okay to curse when you're being shot at. We can't right now because we're not actually being shot at, we're just playing a video game." The only thing that distressed him was where everyone was going to live once we blew the Halo up, which in retrospect is pretty empathetic for a seven year old.
I hope that the kids don't get Live accounts. I wouldn't want a kid mixed up in all the unfiltered bigotry.

i think the new holiday bundles will move lots of 360's.
Why don't companies bundle more games, for free, like the holiday bundle? I understand that they want people to buy games same day they get the console, but i think you move more consoles in the long run by bundling in a game to play. Look at the wii and wii sports.
i think the more consoles you have in the marketplace the better it is for developers to make quality games as the potential user base is larer.

I'm not saying every kid should get Halo, but I'd say any teenager is fare game. The point is, kids will want to 360 for Halo 3, even if they tell their folks how much they want to play Viva Pinata.
Discussion of whether kids should play Halo 3 is not really relevant. It may be worthy topic in another thread, though.
But you failed to answer the question you included in my quote. What game will drive kids to want a PS3 this holiday season?

I don't really care about the % increase here as much as where the 360 ranks among the Wii and PS3. It beat the Wii, and crushed the PS3 the month Halo 3 came out. That's interesting news. There are a ton of factors that go into bumps over last year's sales.
I'm with many folks that don't think how the 360 stacks up vs. the Wii really matters. I mean, it does to a degree, but the real battle is 360 vs. PS3. The Wii will get its number regardless of their rival. So the horrible showing by the PS3 is newsworthy, and worth discussing. We are headed into the holiday season, and it could doom the PS3 if it does not start to at least pull even with the 360 in sales.

I don't think the PS3 is doomed yet especially since the big games haven't been released yet, if they don't do really anything this christmas season it is a bad thing but it's not the end of the world for the PS3, now by the end of 08 if the PS3 isn't selling than the PS3 is doomed but not end of this year.
now I also don't think if the 360 sales don't stay around where they are than that's a bad thing for the 360 in general, even though it's a great system when the biggest game on the system comes out and the sales of the 360 don't stay up there than that's really telling.

I found the following statement very telling when it comes to the current state of the PS3.
Halo 3 sold more copies than all games made for the competing PlayStation 3 console for the months of May, June, July, August and September combined.
Source
And I'd argue that a good chunk of the Halo fans already bought the system for Gears of War - sci-fi shooter! -, BioShock or or other FPS titles like Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon AWF 1&2.
Wow the 360 outsold the Wii. I know in Japan a few weeks or months back the PSP outsold the DS during the period that Monster Hunters was released. I think it's the same thing here. I mean this is probably the biggest title that will ever be released on the 360 and yet it barely pushed the 360 ahead of the Wii. Also MS spent a ton of money on marketing H3. So given that and the Wii is still hard to find I'd have to say it's a 1-time lead for the 360 in the ongoing console wars.
I wouldn't be surprised. I read in the Gamasutra writeup that September was Wii's best month yet, since the console is slowly becoming less supply-constrained.
Also, evidence of that Xbox 360 release date bonanza, where tons of people buy the game at release and then the numbers fall dramatically the following month:
August NPD:
3. BioShock (Xbox 360 -- 490,900)
6. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii -- 218,100)
September NPD:
7 WII METROID PRIME 3: CORRUPTION NINTENDO OF AMERICA 167K
8 360 BIOSHOCK TAKE 2 INTERACTIVE (CORP) 150K
Those Bioshock numbers warm my heart, but I'm really curious to see how the 360 Orange Box moves.

None of this surprises me except the Heavenly Sword numbers (I really didn't expect it to sell that much even.) It's a shame to not see Metroid Prime 3 selling more as I think it's the best in the series. Also, while I think it's a good thing to see Tony Hawk get some competition (especially since this year's version apparently blows), it's a shame the competitor has to be basically a commercial delivery vehicle masquerading as a game. EA can put their name on basically anything and it'll sell well though.
I think Christmas will do better for PS3 but Wii and then 360 will definitely come out on top.

Lest we forget that the day Wii started to go on sale, Microsoft claimed 10 million sold units. Wii has been selling like hotcakes, yes, but it still has a long way to go to catch 360 in actual installed user base.

Actually, it already has. The Wii is the number one selling console, world wide.

Gotcha. Apparently I was misinformed.

First of all, shipped != sold. Secondly, do a Google search for "360 stuffing the retail channel." That was pretty much confirmed by the point that they had shipped 11.6 million units by the end of July 2007.
On a different note: Good article intro over at Bill's blog. (The rest does deliver as well, but man, the intro is a zinger.)
This October, November, and December are going to be critical months for the PS3, I think. Brand loyalty, a more reasonable price, and a much better library should help. But if Sony can't accelerate its install base growth with a $399 console during its second holiday season--ouch.
It'll be interesting to see if this month's upward trend for the 360 will continue through December. I'm inclined to believe it will. The 360's got a lot going for it. The RROD fiasco seems to have quieted, and I think it'll get a lot of mileage out of its exclusives.
As for the Wii, I'm pretty much convinced that it'll sell like hotcakes for another couple of years at least, almost irregardless of the quality of its software.
