Use Portal in HL2 (including Episodes)...
Thursday, October 18th, 2007 - 10:45am
Did not see this posted anywhere. Of course searching for portal and HL2 brings up tons of results so please cough kindly if this has already been posted.
THIS I will have to try when I get home!

Is Weighted Companion Cube there too?

Hmm, I may have to give that a try.

But I can't make the Combine fall to their doom through the portals?

I've heard that it's buggy, in some cases, dangerously so. Carrying something through the portal with the gravity gun reportedly causes the game to crash.

Still! I'm terribly amazed it even transports the player at all! People have been trying to replicate this functionality in Garry's Mod for months... I imagine this will make its way to some very weird deathmatch mods pretty soon. (at least I hope so)

Yea I can't wait to get home and try this. I'll post my findings here...

Man, imagine a version of The Hidden where the hidden can create invisible portals...

Ok I got it working. But as NSMike wrote, its somewhat... no pretty buggy.
Seems as if the portals have some sort of clip boundary around them... hard to jump/step through them sometimes. You also get stuck at random places in the maps.
If they flesh this out I can see it being pretty fun.. adds a whole new dynamic to the game.

That's a very good idea.
Well, I don't like to toot my own horn, but I'm a pretty good amateur rectal photographer. Would you like to see my portfolio?

Yes and no. Fleeing as hidden would become trivial. Just put a exit portal somewhere you know will be pretty save. Walk around to find a target. Kill the target, shoot a portal, walk through and disappear to the other end of the map.
Still, sounds pretty cool to get the portal gun into single and multi player modes.
I don't watch, I interact!
I had a couple conversations with coworkers yesterday about how much fun a HL2DM mod with just a portal gun and gravity gun would be. Add in placeable turrets and plenty of physics objects and you could have a really insane game. Probably nothing that would work for the competitive community, but a fun playground for deathmatch.
I was thinking that it would be great with quake-style floating-platform-in-space type levels, or even simple killbox type designs.
I hope someone makes something quick and dirty like that, and doesn't screw it up by trying to add too much (All HL2 and TF2 weapons! Giant Levels! 42 unique vehicles! RTS Mode!). I think it could be pretty awesome, as long as the performance (framerate and network) of 8-12 people tossing around portals doesn't make it an impossibility.

I expect that having more than one pair of portals open at once would probably make the game too slow to be any fun, but a mode where people got to take turns playing Chell would be kinda neat. She only gets the portalgun, and has to trick people into walking over portals and falling to their doom, everyone else has normal deathmatch weapons and rules. Also, Chell doesn't take falling damage, so she should be able to land on people to kill them... Mario-style.
That would be rad.
