Young GWJers
Wednesday, October 17th, 2007 - 12:52pm
Hey, I've listened to the podcast for a couple months. I registered on the forums recently. I also play TF2 on Stan's religiously now. I have the most fun on this site. Im still in a CSS clan, I know I should let it go, but this has become a true second online home after that. I am 18, or will be on Saturday. I may possibly be the youngest guy here. I'm suddenly at a lost as to why there are so few younger people here. Notice in saying this I am not saying you all are old. Contrariwise, I wish that I was of an age where people respected my opinion more.

Maybe the "with Jobs" part is a turn off for the teenage crowd. Perhaps we should change the title of the site to "Gamers with Booze."

I tried replying to this a few times in a meaningful way that also did not seem to insult an entire age group, but I fail.
The only thing I can say really is that the maturity (in a macro sense, not a micro... never in a micro, and if you ever think it so, go find the thread discussing whether it's okay to teabag girls in FPS games
) requirement here is pretty high. From what I've seen, there is little tolerance for a lot of the usual forum activities: "first" posts, spamming up one's post count, flame wars, personal attacks. I'm not that far removed from teenager land: there are a lot of people in that age group who, unlike you, can't hang with that.
It's definitely not all of you though.
There's no specific reason I'm aware of young people can't be here, they just need to possess the maturity for it like you. Some do, some don't.
Well, I consider college and my job both jobs.....
but yeah I would have found this site a lot quicker if that was the title.....
or "Gamers with Booze.....who accept bribes"
or "Gamers with Fakes"

And get off my lawn.
In all seriousness, I respect opinions based on validity, not age. At the risk of sounded obnoxious, many 18 year olds don't have much worth listening to for folks my age. I know I didn't when I was 18.
Worry more about polishing your opinion, and less about your age.

Seriously, a lot of the poor behavior that's common on other forums isn't tolerated here. The rules are the filtration system of this site.
I don't think you're the youngest but I really don't know.

Respect is earned Son, and you havnt lived long enough.
There are other college students here as well though.
Problem is, at 18 you likely didn't know that you didn't have anything much to add to the conversation.
And paradoxically, if an 18 year old is mature enough to realize that they don't necessarily have that much to bring to the table, then they're probably mature enough to actually contribute something worthwhile.
Edit: I kind of feel the same way about my own contributions, what with this "Coffee Grinder" tag following me about...

You'll fit in just fine here with words like that. Welcome!

Too funny. That was my first thought as well.
I agree. Except for folks that divulge it, I really have no idea how old different folks are on this site.

I submit to the committee that this is actually an "I'm new" thread in disguise, which is a clear violation of Article 8 of the Forum Code of Conduct.
I actually had to do this once. Some kid was taking pictures of all the cars that passed by from middle of my front lawn. My neighbors were curious what was up, cars were slowing down wondering why they were getting their pictures taken. (My house is next to a four way intersection in the development.) I was a little nervous someone might actually get into an accident being distracted, but basically I just wanted him off my lawn. He said it was for a class project, I said "Great, I hope you do well, now move over to the sidewalk and take your pictures from there instead of my lawn."

Probably because most of this site is text.

You might be the youngest now, I've been visiting this site since I discovered it as a Freshman in high school, now I'm a freshman in college and I'll be 19 in about 3 weeks. Welcome to the fold.

I was thinking the same thing Irongut, I just didn't want to be the finger pointer. Back in my day, serious breaches of the CoC would result in a whippin'.
As someone who matured far faster than his friends and preferred speaking with adults and older girls when he was a teenager, I understand where you might be coming from. Even though it's the internet, I think the tendency for people to hang around with like-minded groups still holds true. The front page and the threads all show language that a lot of kids won't relate to, so they just don't bother.
The exception that proves the rule is Wordsmythe, he's 12 but you wouldn't know it ... sometimes.

Actually, you're not the youngest one here. I know of several high school students who lurk here, and at least one who posts consistently. But you wouldn't be able to tell that from that person's posts - they don't read that way.
Respect for your opinions has nothing to do with your age around here. It has to do with the content of your opinion. You really don't know how old people are here. Some very mature sounding people can't vote yet, and the ones you would bet dollars to donuts were disguised 9th grade smack-monkeys are college graduates and parents themselves.
So go for it! It might help to think of your posts like a persuasive writing assignment. Especially if you're going to do a root post about an issue.

Yeah, I think the reason we don't have a lot of teens is that very few can (or want) to adhere to our CoC, most notably our enforcement of the use of actual punctuation, grammar and spelling. If you can live up to our elitist standards, welcome aboard.
NOTE: This is not a doodle bug.

Or maybe think of your posts as many tiny definitions of the kind of person you want to be seen as. So like, if you say things that are smart and funny we'll like you. But, if you mess up and say something dumb, we'll hate you, and you'll have to leave.

He's 12 now? Happy birthday Smyth-ee! Sorry I missed it!
I guess "The City that Drinks" doesn't really specify what's in the cup, does it?
Edit (add):
Oh crap. Well, let me know when it's time to go. . . my wife says I don't take hints well.

To be honest, whenever a reference to Young GWJers comes up on this site, I think it ususally refers to 'the children of GWJers.'
I think a GWJer is just a Goodjer, young or old, fat or thin, brilliant like me or not....

I've tried to decipher what this means and have failed. Please explain.

I think it goes like this.
If GWJ maturity is a bowl of spaghetti, as long as you are looking at the whole bowl, it is quite mature and well behaved. But if you use your fork and pick out just one particular thread, you may find an angel hair strand of silliness here or there.

Being newish/lurker of a certain age, I agree the 'with jobs' tag did attract me, since, um, I have a job and it seemed to in a way say "Not SomethingAwful, please come in!". If I'm going to dislike someone its going to be based on their terrible personality and horribly incorrect opinions which age doesn't tend to solve anyway
In general though the 20s-40's crowd, those trying to balance gaming, work, relationships its what makes this forum interesting for me due to like experiences.
Paging Hemi and Bagga, paging Hemi and Bagga...
I'm here. What did I miss?
Don't worry about your age, but don't be afraid to express it either. Be who you are. I'm no longer 18, but I can appreciate the fact that certain things that appeal to younger people don't appeal to me anymore. It's nice to have some different perspectives other than the "Mortgage, student loan, insurance paying" variety.
Edit - nevermore

But yeah, that's pretty much exactly what I was trying to get at. Hooray, someone can comprehend my babbling!
Yeah, I couldn't help but wonder if I might occasionally fall under that umbrella too.

Lots of what is being said here is a big reason I have found this forum so appealing and enjoyable. Solid, well thought out opinions coupled with an openness to rebuttal and criticism that is also well thought out.

I see, I see. You do realise that a site with immature people would have had a thread advocating teabagging women, not questioning whether it was appropriate.
