Steam, you slay me
Just today I was explaining to someone the wonderful service that Steam has become, and how I will never again buy a physical game that I could instead play on Gametap or Steam.
Then I went to fire up Team Fortress 2 in the couple of hours I had this evening, and the gods of Steam decided it was time to crap on me.
90 minutes later, after many restarts, forcing Steam to update itself, etc, I'm stuck with Steam refusing to run things and bringing my system to a crawl when it runs. At first it wouldn't run at all, then after I removed some files and forced it to update, it got stuck "scanning for games updates"...then after 20 minutes it decided to list my games but froze on trying to run one, etc.
Nothing has changed since I played last night, and nothing on my system has been touched since then, but Steam has decided to go wacko, and now I can't play anything I was intending to play.
I say to you, sir -- boo!
If it's dead, it's probably me.

Hate to say it, but...have you tried uninstalling steam completely and reinstalling it?
Such are the perils of PC-gaming. It's quite possible it's just steam not playing well with some of the other stuff you have on your system. Whenever you have a *relatively* open platform such as windows, even the best laid programs sometimes crap out.
My Steam experience has been flawless, so I'm still gonna preach the good word

Whenever Steam has misbehaves I delete the clientregistry.blob file in the Steam directory, then relaunch Steam. It reinitializes itself, rescans the games and usually solves any problem I have. I think I've only uninstalled/reinstalled once or twice.
no particular interest, no particular talent
If you do reinstall Steam, make sure to save the cache files so you don't have to download them again.
If you have AV or a 3rd party firewall, that might be a source of the problem... or it could just be a corrupted file. Steam seems more sensitive to instabilities than other programs. Since I run Steam a la carte except sometimes ventrilo, I rarely have problems and I've been using Steam since the first day of beta. I also have a pretty standard system consisting of components that are popular according to hardware statistics.
I am stuck downloading again, because the problem seems to have been something with the games...maybe something got corrupted the last time I shut down, but whenever it started looking at the games to see if they were updated, all hell would break loose. It's not a matter of other software conflicting, because I only use this system for gaming and absolutely nothing had changed in the last several days while I've been happily Steaming away.
So I reinstalled Steam and started downloading, and got no gameplaying tonight (to make matters worse, it's my fricking birthday!)
I did copy my steamapps directory, so I can put my Portal saves back in place. I wanna get to the Jonathan Coulton song, dammit!
If it's dead, it's probably me.
Has anyone else noticed glitches with progress tracking and achievements in Steam?
With Portal, the first game I've ever dealt with Achievements in, I've encountered two issues:
- First, it keeps forgetting that I finished a bonus level. I have to go to the save and finish it again for it to register.
- Second, it forgot my progress on the "camera shy" achievement and seemingly stopped tracking it. Unless perhaps that must be done in a single session? But earlier the achievement said I'd done 3/33 cameras or some such, and now the record is gone and it seems to have stopped tracking further camera kills.
If it's dead, it's probably me.
I believe you've got to get them all in one go it's not that hard to do and I just did it in one sitting and quit at lvl18 and got the record but I can't remember if it saves your high-point.
Since you essentially have to replay through the game to get them all anyway, I don't see the BFD.

Nope.
Wierd. Seems like steam really hates you.
As Eezy said...working as intended.

There are achievement glitches. However, at least for me, once you lock down an achievement, it stays. Progress doesn't always keep, though. VALVe knows about the problems, though, so I don't doubt it's being looked at.
I've had the statistics on TF2 reset on me once, though I have to say it was still during beta. No other probs with Steam

How do you knock off the ones on non-portalable walls?

With at least some of them you are able to redirect the energy pellets to do so.

That is just really strange - guess anything can happen even with the most robust system. I am on the no more physical game if I can get it through STEAM. Just for the fact that when I rebuild my rig, I can load up STEAM and download all my games in mass...
Zune | STEAM | Live | Xfire
You don't. There are enough on non-portalable walls to complete the achievement.

That fixed my issue where I couldnt log into Steam without it crapping out with some Friends list error
Aint nothing new about the world order..it's been playing since the day they put George Washington on a quarter

As Dysplastic said (though his sounds weird when you read it) the achievement takes into affect the ones you can't knock down. In other words, the ones in the beginning levels before you get a portal gun of your own and the ones on walls that you can't create portals on don't count towards the 33 needed for the acheivement. If you knock down every camera you can before the fire pit you'll get exactly 33.

I bought Opposing Fronts on Steam last week. It downloaded fine, but the game won't launch. No error message, the progress bar is full, but the Launch Game button is still greyed-out. Things I've tried:
-Rebooted.
-Left it on all night.
-Deleted steam.dll, steamUI.dll and clientregistry.blob.
-Uninstalled Steam.
-Re-downloaded game.
-Ran Steam's diagnostics, no problems.
The thing is, I am able to run the RelicCOH.exe from the installed folder and I created the Relic online account and put in my original COH cd key. It unlocked the original campaign, but I still can't play any of the Opposing Fronts content.
Any more ideas before I call Steam for support?

This could be a temporary problem as it JUST popped up from two other people today on the Opposing Front forums. And here I was about to point at 64-bit Vista, you're bound to get problems on that.
From the looks of the Steam and Relic forums, there are quite a few people with the same problem as me...
Update: Some people have been getting refunds from Steam for the same problem as me. I asked for one too. Will update this thread if I hear back soon.
