Downloading and installing the Frontlines beta. When PC mags were getting excited about ET:QW and UT3 earlier this year, I thought this game looked like the one that deserved more attention.

For those that don't know, this game is being developed by the team that made the Desert Conflict mod for BF1942 (the real team, not the guys that went on to make the Desert Conflict mod for BF2, which were just "beta testers and supporters" of the original Desert Conflict mod). It's a "near future" team-based combat game along the Battlefield/ET:QW lines.

Well, the game runs like dog crap on my aging video card, so it'll have to wait for an upgrade before I see if it's any good or not.

The original beta I downloaded was completely broken. Half the menu buttons literally didn't work (including the one that let's you actually join a game), you couldn't rebind keys and because of this, no one was playing. I'm hoping the latest patch they just released fixes that. I'll give it a try tonight if anyone's up for it.

I hope it's not broken this time. The game looks cool but the other betas have been such a mess.

Well I need to patch to the latest version but cannot find one! There are a handful of servers but they all run a newer version...

http://www.fileplanet.com/181779/180000/fileinfo/Frontlines:-Fuel-of-War...

Anyway I played for about 20 minutes - solo - no one else on the servers. First it runs on the UT 3 engine; can your say, "texture popping"... Outside of that it stressed my PC on my max settings, looks good. Because there was just no one playing I cannot comment on the game play other than it resembled BF2.

The only thing that caught my eye right off wast he UI. Again; like UT 3, it felt like it belonged on a console. Everything is really big! I know the product is on PS3 and 360, but I wish they would put effort into the game for PC unique features.

You can drop by the beta forums for more info. You should have gotten a password when you got your key. I'm pretty sure I know what's going on with the versions, and I'm also pretty sure I can't post about it on a public message board. Just start up a topic and people will be able to help you out.

Sorry not going to be paying for the privilege of beta. Tell me how it goes and if it will be a CoD4 killer or not. Having followed this game for a while now I am excited to play it and it's tempting to get a subscription just to get into the Beta but I don't think I will.

There are some new movies online for it. In particular Movie #2 is chilling as it mirrors current real world developments.

I really hope the retail release is as good as the trailer makes it look.

Edit add: Found a nice preview Article on the Beta.

There's currently a single player demo for the xbox available at EB Games and gamestop with a preorder, that includes a bunch of extras (dev interviews and such). There's also a single player demo hitting xbox live on the 12th.

I've spent some time playing the 360 SP demo last night. Initial pluses: game runs well with more than functional graphics; diverse level layout; varied objectives. Minuses: way too much gun recoil, especially when zoomed in; the aiming feels too floaty; can't pick up fallen weapons; predictable enemy AI. It looks like this is built more for multiplayer and I'm definitely intrigued. I'm going to wait to see how it stacks up against Battlefield: Bad Company

Since the Beta Demo is now free for everyone, Open beta I downloaded it and here is my initial look at it.

The Good:
- The Graphics are extremely good. Very much like Gears of War in graphics. Everything so far is pretty smooth even when all hell is breaking loose around you. The Audio is fantastic and the music in the menu is actually pretty rocking.
- I like the break down of classes and secondary roles. For example being a Sniper and a Drone expert you can not only stay in cover and pilots drones around to help your team but you can also pick off people at long range. Anti-Vehicle class along with Ground Support class is pretty good also. Assault with Air Strike cover is interesting. All in all the combo of abilities and classes is nice.
- The recoil of guns seems pretty realistic and the ability to basically go many places (except a few obvious ladders that would seem to be climbable but are not). A few of the walls and such are destructible but not everything.
- There are squad options as well though I have not been able to test them out as much. VOIP is in the game but not active during the Open Beta.

The Bad and Average
- The game is slightly like an arcade shooter in that it seems arcade like in feel. Point and shoot and all that. There are times when it's harder than that but I wouldn't say it realistic at this point. CoD4 is more realistic than it from what I can tell.
- The server browser needs a lot of work and I have been posting on the beta forums about that. Hopefully they fix it a bit before release.
- The drones are extremely hard to stop as it's hard to shoot them and get rid of them. It's very hard to not be killed by them as they seem to come out of no where. If you take the Electronic Warfare secondary skill set it highlights infantry and these drones. Coupled with the anti-vehicle class it's pretty easy to take them out so having a squad with several types of classes and skill sets is very important.
- I piloted the vehicles in Oil Fields map and tried all of them. They work pretty well however the chopper is rather difficulty to control in that it doesn't operate the same as they do in BF2. Much more arcade like in control. It's also pretty difficult to get anywhere and do a decent job as there are constantly rockets coming up at your from anti-vehicle infantry. Since you can't do fast passes effectively you hang in the air longer than you should. Maybe with a little practice I might be able to be more effective. Have yet to try the gunner's seat longer than a couple of minutes so I can't say how effective it is. So I don't know how well they will be effective wise in the long run but they are helpful at time that's certainly true.

So I like the game in general. I don't think it takes as much skill as CoD4 takes but it might be worth it as casual play. I didn't see anything about rankings or medal or anything like that but that might be because it's Beta. You do earn more skills in your secondary skill set as you play but that's the only change I noticed. I think it's worth the play at very least especially if they have a lot more maps in the full game. So that's my take on it.

Here is a bad for you, if you hide in the buildings or near rubble. Sometimes you become invulnerable. Like you can be in plain site but the enemy can not shoot you or explode to unless they come into the same hiding spot. Examples are the left side of the subway capture point in the 1/2 destroyed building. Also I notice that some windows and such can not be shot through at a distance but when you get upclose you can.

Other then a few bugs it seems to be a fun game. The vehicles are bit wonkey but they are fun.

TIP: Place C4 on the drones.. when they die the C4 is left over.. then swap to your c4 and click BOOM!

I played the 360 demo and lost interest. It looks like an xbox game and runs like crap. I didn't think it controlled very well either.

The MP demo is out on XBL. I think they have something special going here...The atmosphere is excellent, the class combo options are interesting.

This is looking to shape up as a deep BF-like experience with a fleshed out SP campaign.

Whats the GWJ consensus; 360 or PC?

If I buy it, it will be on PC. I'm hoping it is good enough to replace BF2142 on Thursdays since we are down to a handful of people who play weekly.

I'm waiting on reviews and if good I'll be grabbing this on the PC for some Thursday night shooter action. I'm just hopping its not the run-and-gun speed of CoD4 which was too much like Quake in modern dress for me.

It seems like it might be a good replacement. I can't get up for 2142 any more, so anything with vehicles would be good.

PC Demo out March 11 - which sucks since the game comes out 2/25. If there are any good reviews by the time it is released, I'll probably cave in and buy it through Steam before the demo comes out.

Wasn't sure if I should post here or start a 360 thread, but here goes...

Just read a preview over at Gamespot and they're reporting the 360 version will support up to 50 players per match due to THQ actually running their own servers instead of relying on local hosts.

I played the 360 SP demo a bit and enjoyed it though there were some definite lag issues. I hope they can work all that out. The mechanics and gadgets are fun and I think the big battles will be chaotic bliss if the lag can be held at bay.

Anyone else think it had a really short draw distance?

I really like the weapon and class combination system, and found the vehicle/infantry balance to be fun. I had a nice back and forth with a helicopter, pinging it with bullets occasionally to keep it distracted, and then dodging behind cover and using its shadow to keep track of it. Once it finally got pissed enough to give up, I made for a tank and put a shell through the cockpit. The Bruckheimer to Chessmaster ratio was just right.

This game has the option to play on servers where everyone has auto-aim turned off. As far as I know that's a console first, and I'd feel embarassed to pass up the first game to go that route when I was bitching about that very thing just last week.

I played the demo and it is a really pgood game. I prefered the infanty only urban combat. The only issues I have with the game (hopefully they fixed) is that there are areas of rubble where if you stand behind them no one can shoot you.

For instance there was this half destroyed apartment building, if you walk into this rubble area even if 3/4 of your body was exposed nothing could harm you and conversely you could not shoot out as well. But other than that it was fun.

The only part I dislike about the MP demo is the respawn system. It has a marked tendency to put you right in front of the opposition's bullets.

Other than that, the draw distance is not so bad...I think they are walking a balance between giving a sense of realism, and server load. Also, without limiting the draw, and making it seem like there is a "fog of war", snipers would be godlike.

The way to limit snipers on a dual analog control scheme is to not have any auto-aim. The fog of war just makes snipers not be snipers.
