Orange Box 360 Catch-All
We have threads for Episode 2, Portal, and TF2, but the original Half-Life 2 as well as Episode One are new ground for the Xbox 360. So this thread is for them, and anything else 360-specific relating to the Orange Box.
Having finished Episode Two on PC, I've started going through Half-Life 2 on the 360 version. The controls are, well, really great. Aiming is fantastic: responsive control (no "stick lag") and very accurate. There is a very small degree of "sticky aim" (turning movement slows slightly when the crosshair aims at an enemy), but it's very subtle, not Halo-like. I had to stand still and move the crosshair at a slow, steady rate to notice it at all. The gameplay experience felt exactly the same as playing HL2 on the PC (which I actually didn't play from start to finish until this past summer).

I haven't ventured beyond Portal and Team Fortress yet.

Can you turn sticky aim off? I don't like using aim assistance on the console.

I didn't notice any aim-assist... odd. As for HL2, so far runs ok... loading screens are quick and controller is spot on. Than again, I got as far as to 'What Cat?'
I've mostly spent time with Portal. Weird game, it started with cool!... then kind of trailed of to 'meh'... and then became awesome!

I played a healthy heaping of Halflife 2 and Portal last night. It's been so long since I finished it that, halflife 2 felt both fresh and familiar. The first time the lambda supply cache achievement counter appeared, suddenly I got much more serious about exploring all the nooks and crannies.
Portal is neat. I disappointed myself on one puzzle though, because I seemed to clear it thru shear luck, not that there is any problem with that.... other than I felt unworthy. It's such a fresh game mechanic, I'm enjoying every minute of it.

So far just played Portal, but I plan to dig into HL2 tonight. For a glorified "tech demo" Portal is amazingly fun. I have 2 trial left to finish tonight.

Seems like I have another 360 purchase coming ... and I was hoping to hold off until COD4 after purchasing NBA 2K8 and Halo 3. 5 titles in one box is tough to pass up though, especially because I haven't yet played Half-Life 2, and the first is still one of my favorite games. Team Fortress 2 is incredibly tempting, and seeing it all in HD on a big screen - count me in.
Keep the positive comments coming so I don't feel bad about the purchase.

Anyone played the 360 version of TF2 online? How well does it work?

HL2: Fun, but you can tell it's an Xbox port, bad textures. It looks way better even on my PC. Controls are ok. Still, this is freaking Half Life 2. It's awesome.
EP1: Looks a lot cleaner, but still not as good as the PC version.
EP2: Haven't finished EP1 yet
Portal: Freaking awesome. Easily the most fun I've had with the package yet. It makes me want more Portal.
TF: Very old school FPS vibe. It's no Halo, but it's goofy, fun, and easy to play, so I'm digging it.

I've got the original xbox version of HL2, and this is indeed very similar, just a bit crisper and with HDR added.
And I haven't got to play TF2 yet, anyone interested in giving it a whirl?

I've got it on the PC and I'm enjoying the heck out of TF2 (which is odd, as I'd sort of gotten fed up with PC gaming). Now, I'm reading this and every day brings me one step closer to double dipping. I'd like to play HL2 and both episodes (never finished any of it on the PC) on my couch with my feet up.

I bought the OB yesterday, and finished Portal last night. Awesome!
I haven't ever played a Half Life game, so my next mission is to play through those.
But I will be up for trying TF2 anytime you guys see me online (I haven't played the beta, or anything).

Team Fortress on the 360 has been a blast. They have some work to do with the lag. It's pretty bad in public games. It seems they'll let anyone host. When we had a goodjer only game it ran smooth with no lag at all.
It's definitely getting 80% of my play time until Hellgate comes out.

I've had a rough time getting TF2 to work on the 360. I keep having to restart my 360 due to the game hanging up.
The competition on the 360 is VERY low right now though.

Welcome to the suck =)

So, I only got to play two games of TF2 last night before switching to some Halo. This is nothing against TF2: I really liked it, but I need time to experiment with the classes and not suck (for example, I thought that the ubercharge auto launched when the meter filled, leading to a pretty embarrassing death). My favorite moment was clubbing two snipers to death in 2fort while they were holding down the middle (snuck through the pipes, managed to double jump past a defender who didn't see me).
2fort was the second game and it was lag free. My first game was in Hydro and it was unplayable. I wonder if it's because of the round nature of Hydro. Perhaps the constant resetting (my team never would get to the point before their scouts, so we lost a lot) makes it worse? Or perhaps the server just sucks. Anyway, I know a bunch of people at work who either have it or are going to get it, so if anyone wants to pick a night for TF2 (wed?), I'm there with flair.
TF2 works great with a gamepad, in sme ways, better than with the keyboard (sacrelige? Possibly, but true!). It looks great on a big screen as well; add to that the overal value fo the games in the box, it's most definitely the most "gameplay per dollar" you'll see outside of an MMO.

I'm not the organizer type, but do we need a special 360 TF2 night on the schedule, or are Tuesdays it for both pc and 360 games?

You definitely can't switch out your weapons as quick on the 360 as you can with mouse/keyboard. I've not tried it yet but i bet Rocket Jumping is a royal pain with a controller as well. Still can't deny how much fun this game is.

Just so you all know that I Hate you
. Ok now im going to have to go pick it up.
hey everybody, first post. I've had the 360 since launch but this is the first time i've really gotten on Live (except when the wife plays Uno, etc.). I was wondering if this is the best place to post my gamertag to find some GWJers on Team Fortress 2? Either way, its "wokavan". So far the lags been pretty bad, and i'm having to relearn the maps (played a lot of the original quake mod ... 10 years ago? jesus), but i definitely see the potential for some great multiplayer after we all get our bearings.
hope to see some of you guys on live!

You can link your gamertag to xbox.com in your signature. That way we can just click on it, it'll take us to your page on xbox.com, and we can send a friend request from there. Better yet, click on our tags and send fried requests. (Note that a lot of folks are full at 100 friends...)

Like I said, it's very subtle, and I had to go out of my way to discover it.
Virtually EVERY console shooter has a certain degree of aim assistance. The best games, like this one, use it so subtly that you'd never notice unless you knew exactly what to look for and tried hard to find it.

I haven't picked it up for the XBox yet, but can you do split screen on TF2?
Just finished Portal last night (I'm a filthy double dipper - c'mon Hemi!), and I think it might be one of the best games I've ever played. The pacing is so spot on - the way they introduce you to a stable of "moves," followed by layering of objectives, then timed elements, then stress, and finally just throw you into a series of tiny puzzles that you feel you just need to rush through. The narrative of the end final puzzle is so great - I really want a script of everything that's going on.
And the emotional rush of the end cutscene and the credits makes the whole thing feel so epic and memorable.

How or why would that be different? Shouldn't hitting the d-pad be the same as hitting numbers? Also, you can cycle between the weapons with the left and right bumpers, right? I thought you could, and most characters only have three weapons so that couldn't be faster without some kind of mind link technology.
I really enjoyed what little I played of Team Fortess 2. With souldaddy as host it was fine, but we only had eight players while I was there.
What console shooters have you been playing without sticky aim? The only recent two I've noticed that had that as an option were Bioshock and The Darkness. It was pretty hard in a good way.
Episode 2 was a blast, though not quite as good as Episode 1. I wish they'd just give up on vehicles or start over from scratch.
Rocky and I hit the Halo campaign today and kept noticing how often Adam Baldwin cropped up as a space marine. This right after playing Episode 2 where two out of ever three resistance dudes is Adam frikkin' Baldwin. What the F? It's like he has become generic scifi male over night. I envy.
Is it just me or are the combine soldiers one tenth as intelligent as the the soldiers in Half Life? I remember fighting those guys like I would fight real people. Before I just thought I was killing them too quickly with a mouse for them to have time to behave intelligently, but now on dual analog they have no excuse. They just stand there and die.

That may be the achilles heel for TF2 on the 360; You can run up to 24 players on Jakelegg's server, and it's been pretty smooth for me. Most you can get on 360 is 16, and we were getting some laggy action, i thought, when we were at 10. I'll bet they'll improve the game with patches, so i'm hopeful.

Because it IS mind link technology. Mainly though i'm sure it's because i've been using the keyboard/mouse for years. The amount of space and time it takes for me to hit 1234 is less than hitting the Dpad. The bumpers are a total waste of time if you have to cycle.

Not when there's only three weapons, silly.
You're holding weapon B, and weapons A and C have instant access. Couldn't be faster.

I agree, I really like how they set the controls up for team fortress on the controller, mind you I still prefer the keyboard but the controller makes it pretty fun as well.
I ended up double dipping and now own the orange box on both pc and 360,
I really am liking it so far and look forward to going through half life 2 on the 360.
