This surfaced on the interwebs recently (PDF file). If you haven't played Planescape, there are spoilers in the second half of the document. But all in all it's funny as hell, the people who made one of my favorite RPGs were really passionate about Planescape, and it shows. Have fun.

Damn, that just reinforces the greatness of that game. ... I still kind of wish it had been turn-based, though.

Can this game still be had? Will it run on XP? I've always regretted not playing it.

I believe it's on Gametap along with all the other Bioware stuff on the Baldur's Gate engine. Definitely worth playing. I remember kind of rushing through it ... maybe I should play it again. And I never did play Baldur's Gate 2 ...

Damn it.

PT is one of my favorites of all time too.

If anyone is interested there's a free download of a novelization of the game that was created using all in-game dialogue.

http://www.wischik.com/lu/senses/pst-book.html

From the site:

Planescape: Torment is an emotionally deep, thoughtful computer game. You play an amnesiac immortal in search of his past and future. Rhyss Hess played through the game, wrote down all the dialog, and added enough narrative to make it flow like a novel.

I grabbed a copy quite some time ago and it reads really well.

That was a cool read thanks.. It brought back so many fond memories of a simpler time for me in real life and in gaming.. I even overlooked the dig on Ultima 7.

Aint nothing new about the world order..it's been playing since the day they put George Washington on a quarter

I found my copy of Planescape: Torment in the bargain bin of Best Buy alongside Fallout 2 for five bucks. My biggest regret of my current widescreen monitor is that it streaches older games like P:T out so they look bad.

And yes, the ultimate game, even if much of my strategy consisted of running my Nameless into a mob, hacking a few with an axe, dying, and trying again.

Remember, only by treating everyone with dignity and respect can we maintain the element of surprise for that inevitable day when we wipe our enemies from the face of the Earth.

For clarification, "bnpederson" is pronounced "Brian."

It was put up as part of a two-part interview at RPG Watch in July, so it's probably some automatic update thingy.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun put up a retrospective on Torment recently as well.

Yeah, it was probably just a date code that updated when it was printed to PDF.

bnp: virtually all monitors will stretch with the correct aspect ratio if you dig around for the right setting. Note that it could also be your video card doing the stretching, so take a look in video options too.

I have never seen a display that did this wrong. Not all of them have the 'wreck aspect ratio' option, but every one I've seen will have an option to do it right.

I am starting again with PT after a first try for a couple of hours. I play in windowed mode to retain the original resolution. The problem is that I think I should be enjoying it more. I had a lot of fun with Baldurs Gate 2 and Gothic 2, but now I cannot get into any newer RPGs, tried Oblivion, Gothic 3 with no success and now Planescape is my last chance.

Any tips on how to enjoy the game or I should leave computer RPG forever? (I like a lot P&P RPGs).

Play a character with high intelligence and wisdom. And be patient with the beginning, it does take a while to get really going.

Also, love words.

Sure. I was finishing Planescape few months ago on XP and there wasn't any major problems. However - mind that not all new nvidia drivers run good with P:T. Wikipedia entry for game has few tips on troubleshooting graphic problems. Instead of that all should be ok.

For me irony was that when I played it first time I heard that it was great but I wasn't quite aware that it varies so much from BG scheme. And I decided to put it to test: play warrior with low STR and agility levels pumping wisdom and charisma all up. Later on someone explained me that it was "proper" for best game experience ;]

True!
(Also, if you live outside english-speaking countries - don't even bother to find localized version. I put great effort to find P:T in english and have to admit it: as game is mostly about dialogues you have to play non-translated version to enjoy it fully.)

Well, if you enjoy P&P RPGs you will surely love P:T. Quite contrary to series like Gothic or any newer RPGs it is true descendant to classic cRPG games.
(Overally I think that games like Oblivion have done great damage to genre by just enforcing opinion that there isn't any place in the market for more "classic" and mature cRPGs. That is why some of people inclined to treat Oblivion and Gothic 3 as action games, not RPGs. But still, seems to be hope for "darker" RPGs - Witcher is coming at the end of month and from previews that I read it seems that although it's action-packed it might have more of a true RPG elements that some of us was looking for in last few years.)

Hear hear, I've been visiting for around 2 years but only recently decided to start posting, so welcome to the board.

P:T looks really interesting, one of those games that you wonder how the heck did you miss them when they came out. I'll try to get a hold of it to help me with my Post-Oblivion RPG-lessness...

Actually I can't see that. You write better English than the majority of native English speakers on the Internet, capitalization or no.

And welcome to the board, I too am new to posting here. Yay for newbies!

I'll have to look into that. It hasn't been a huge problem since any game built after Windows 2000 or so has a widescreen option but for those older classics it's certainly been irksome to have the human characters stretched into weird toad-like figures.

Thanks
I was wrong yesterday, I checked and it seems that graphics fix for P:T isn't there. So if you will be experiencing gfx acceleration problems you need to go to 'hardware' in windows settings tab and decrease 'hardware acceleration' slider. This helps with most of glitches.
For normal in-game bugs look for 1.1 patch and fan mods, (well, not mods actually, because - unlikely other Infinity Engine-based games - game wasn't heavily modified but only fan-patched) there's site with tweaks listing somwhere. Some of those are important (eg. I was unable to pick Vhailor for my party because of one of quest bugs) so make sure you start your game with patches installed.
Cheers.

Not for Canadian customers.

I'm pretty sure they did localize it and provide a version translated into Canadian...

Actually, stauf, about a year ago I saw Planescape: Torment bundled with another game in Wal-Mart's "shovelware" section. It's worth a try, eh?

If not, contact a pleasant American and see if they'll ship you a copy.

I meant that Baldur's Gate, Planescape and Icewind Dale are not available to Canadian customers.

EDIT: Not available on GameTap that is. Retail yes.

Your best bet is to play in windowed mode. With it's pre-rendered graphics there's no way you're going to make it look better by increasing the resolution. Except if you were able to re-render everything, of course.
