Must have Dreamcast games
Thursday, October 4th, 2007 - 5:35pm
I'm picking up a Dreamcast tonight that I found on craigslist. "Great condition", $25, comes with 2 controllers, and Crazy Taxi and Super Bomberman online.
I don't have any experience with Dreamcasts (I picked up a Playstation and Final Fantasy 7 around that time) but from listening to video game-related podcasts it seems that there are good games for this console.
With that being said, I'd like some recommendations on "must haves". I'm pretty much into anything but sports games.
Thanks in advance.

Jet Grind Radio, for sure. Other than that, if you like RPGs and haven't played it on the Gamecube, Skies of Arcadia is pretty good.

Jet Grind Radio, definitely. Chu Chu Rocket is one of my all time favorites on all platforms. Crazy Taxi, the original.

Definitely!
Resident Evil Code: Veronica
Power Stone 2 is great for 4 people
Shenmue is pretty solid but isn't for everyone.

Shenmue
Resident Evil: Code Veronica
the Power Stone games
Jet Grind Radio
Skies of Arcadia
A lot of good Dreamcast games, like the sports and fighting titles, have really been completely replaced by newer versions on more recent consoles. I don't see much reason to go back to the Dreamcast 2K's, Virtua Tennis's, or titles like that, though they were awesome when the console was new.

What about backwards compatibility? Can the Dreamcast play Sega CD games for example?

Sadly, no.

There are emulators you can run on a Dreamcast though. I have a SNES emulator disk.

IIRC, the later models disallowed the use of CD-Rs. I had a disc that allowed me to play import games... I actually bought Shenmue II for the dreamcast (from software etc., too. go figure)

Shenmue is one of my all time favorites. It's all I played when I got my Dreamcast. I just can't get enough of these Japanese drama games. Other than that.
Sonic Adventure
Phantasy Star Online
Jet Grind Radio
Resident Evil: Code Veronica
He's buying it used though. No telling which it is.

IF you're remotely a shooter fan, Ikaruga and Mars Matrix are super fun and challenging. =)

If you can't find Mars Matrix, try out MAME's version.

So true. I was trying to rack my brain to think of why I loved the Dreamcast so much (I was a PS2-hater when it came out initially) when I first got it on launch day yet could only think of a couple games I played that stood out. I think this is the main reason. Aside from Jet Grind Radio, Chu Chu Rocket, Crazy Taxi and that boxing game I mostly used the DC for sports games. Especially online sports games. I was in leagues back in like 2000 over the modem. Fun stuff. But all those games have been updated, improved or I'm bored of them for current consoles.

"that boxing game"= Ready 2 Rumble?
The DC also had some solid sega shooters (although Sega themselves were so chickensh*t they wouldnt release a first party light gun). CONFIDENTIAL MISSION was pretty fun... House of the Dead 2. Lots of people were kind of gooey over Typing of the Dead (and yes, I bought the mouse and keyboard for the DC... god bless that internal 56kbps modem
).
I still find it amusing how fanboyish we can be over systems. I remember when the DC came out, I was a big PS1 fan... I hated the DC on principle for some reason. I ended up buying one used a few years later and learned to love it.

Platform/shooter: Fur Fighters, Rayman 2*, MDK2, Jet Grind Radio*, Sonic adventure 1/2, Ecco, Shenmue 1/2*, Stupid Invaders
Racing: Episode 1:Racer (though just a hi-res N64 port), Daytona USA*
Shmups: Mars Matrix*, Ikaruga* (if you don't like shmups, these will make you a believer)
Others: Virtua tennis (assuming you can't get it any other way), Samba De Amigo (awesome, but only if you can get maracas on ebay), Seaman (weird, gotta have a mic though)
*=must-play
Also check out the Dreamcast homebrew scene, it's been awhile since I've looked at it, but a few years ago I had a bunch of the old Lucasarts adventures as ScummVM ports.

Shenmue is a platform/shooter?
Shenmue is so weird. There is so much not to like in those games, what with the tedious 'work' minigames and the monotone voice acting and whatnot... and yet I love them. And I'm totally disappointed that the story may never be finished.
On topic: people have mentioned every Dreamcast game I ever owned so I have nothing useful to add. Get Jet Grind Radio!

The forklift driving game was SO much more fun than the lame "right left right left" game in Shenmue 2. Call me crazy, but I enjoyed those forklifts.
The best thing about buying the DC import version of Shenmue 2 was being able to select the japanese voice acting with english subtitles.
I have Samba De Amigo, and no maracas, and it's still PRETTY fun. If you have a Wii, though, I've heard rumors that this game might be making a visit.
Also, like I said before, don't buy this Dreamcast thinking you're going to be able to run homebrew or ISOs... the early models DO allow CD-Rs, the more recent models don't. I'm not sure how you can tell which is which, but there must be a FAQ out there somewhere.

I was definitely a DC fanboy. I was very angry that the hype of the PS2 alone seemed to be its undoing. Turns out the PS2 as just a better system and has had ridiculous legs. The thing is still going strong.

Shenmue is mind-numbing. I don't see what people get out of it. It's like they took the worst part of every game ever and put it together. It's nothing but boring minigames that simulate menial labor and quick-time events.
Anyway, I loved these:
Skies of Arcadia (I'm currently trucking through the GameCube version but I played the Dreamcast one through 3 times... which is a lot for me!)
Power Stone 2
Resident Evil: Code Veronica (my favorite RE game)
Resident Evil 3 (not bad, more actiony than the others)
REZ
Mars Matrix
Ikaruga
Cannon Spike
Soul Calibur
Frame Gride (think of Armored Core, but with GOOD controls and mechanics, and a vaguely medieval theme to the giant robots... too bad it's entirely in Japanese)
Project Justice
Jet Grind Radio/Jet Set Radio (Xbox version's actually better)
Hydro Thunder
Armada
Plasma Sword
Tech Romancer
Psychic Force 2012
Ooga Booga (this game broke my Dreamcast because I played it so much it overheated)
Gunbird 2 (pick Alucard - yes, THAT Alucard - and the robot guy. They have awesome dialogue)
NOTE: This is not a doodle bug.
Spore
Thanks for all of the suggestions!
It turns out that it's an older model that supports CD-Rs. The guy included a spindle of about a dozen burned games - the ones I recall are Soul Calibur, Resident Evil 3, Crazy Taxi 2, Dead or Alive 2 Limited (Japan version), Samba De Amigo, Sonic adventure 1/2, and Virtua Tennis, although there are some others.
Oh, and a non-burned Starlancer.
I'll have a lot to keep myself occupied with this weekend, since I can't yet play TF2 due to a dead power supply on my gaming PC. Once my RMA comes in, I'll see some of you on TF2!

Yeah, and Stupid Invaders is point-n-click adventure. I just get tired of genres after awhile
Also as a P.S.: If you can find it, try Bomber Hehhe!. It's in Japanese, but you can figure out the menus soon enough. Basically you have to place bombs in buildings in order to topple them. A destruction puzzle game

to each their own, I guess. I enjoyed it for the feeling it produced of actually being immersed in the life of a character-- all of it. I liked that the world seemed almost alive (at first, with diminishing returns), and that I'd never played anything quite like it before.
Rather than "mind numbing," I'd call it "zen meditation in game form."
The english voice acting was pretty horrible, I'll freely admit.
The second game tried to kick things up a notch, but I think they made the scope wider at the expense of making the game shallower-- no more going into every door, too many people had nothing to do with the plot, etc. Still, it was ambitious, and you don't see much "ambition" among games these days. Love it or hate it, it was what it was.
Oh, and as someone who grew up playing and mastering DRAGON'S LAIR, QTEs don't bother me (YMMV).

I wouldn't recommend Shenmue either, it was boring.

I'm another who'll back up Shenmue as being a wonderful and unique experience. As everyone who ever talks about it points out (and has in this thread), it's not for everyone. As a review I read once put it: "I don't enjoy waiting for the bus in real life, why would I like it in a videogame?" Waiting for the bus is part of the character's experience, however, and that's the point of Shenmue: living the experience of another person for awhile. It's like the kind of ultra-geeky roleplaying that works for about 20 hours into every new Elder Scrolls game, but it's successful throughout most of the story. You at least need to give it a try to see if it's the kind of thing that could interest you. You'll either love it or hate it, and it's hard to judge which camp you'll fall into since, though it's labeled "adventure," it's pretty much a genre-buster.

If you're a fan of the old 2D fightin', Last Blade 2 is a worthy alternative to all those Street Fighter iterations. Plus it features a shaolin monk who's victory phrase is "Fear not justice's flames! Your butt's mine, bubblehead!"
