New Belkin Nostromo - woot!
Thursday, October 4th, 2007 - 1:25pm
I was just talking with somebody at work today wondering when/if Belkin was going to update the Nostromo - http://www.belkin.com/pressroom/releases/uploads/10_04_07n52te.html

How hard is it to get used to one of these?

I loved the original Nostromo Speedpad back when I still played on the PC. The only complaint that I ever had was that I went through at least two of them. Both died with stuck keys. They're very easy to get used to and it's a little hard to move back once you do. It also sounds like they improved the mapping software, which is a big plus.
Kick@ss... Ive had 2 n52's over the years (bought another one cuz the buttons just didnt work anymore on the original) and am VERY glad they are making a sequel!

Me too.
But... how is this different than the one I have now, other than that it's all black and has pretty lights?

I love my n52. It's much better than the n50 - more comfortable, more buttons, more grip & weight. Got my n52 used for $15. I will not be getting a te, at least not for $70. Not worth my money for LEDs and minor improvements ("Enhanced tactile feedback"). I'll be a late adopter on this one.
ranalin, it's very easy to get used to, at least the n52. It feels very natural. Great for WASD games, mainly FPS'ers. It takes some time to initially configure a profile for each game, to get it "just right" but it's well worth it in the end.
I guess I need to update the wikipedia article for the n52, and create one for the n52te.

Aye, what Modul8r said. I even use it for RTS and RPG. I love mine and cant play w/out it.
But I'm a sucker for sequels and will gladly pay them to support the development for something I use all the time.

1. Adjustable soft-touch wrist pad for maximum comfort and endurance - hopefully this means some type of rubber/foam instead of the hard plastic.
2. Programmable 8-way thumb pad with removable joystick - this should make the thumbstick easier to use.
3. Razer Synapse™ onboard memory enables plug-and-play versatility with no additional software installation - take it to another PC without having to load any programmable software to map the keys.
I might have to pick one of those up. I have a zboard and I loved using it, but it was a pain in the ass to keep at my desk so its sits idle in my closet. This looks a little more manageable, but I wish it had a row of number buttons up top. anyone every had a problem with that? or is there a workaround i'm missing?
I've never used one before and $70 isn't easy to justify right now. Maybe someday though since it does look interesting.

Looks like Newegg will be selling it $10 cheaper than anyone else.
But yours doesn't have the glowy bits does it? I'll be unsatisfied if I know there's a version with more bling and I didn't get it

Nice. I like the n52 and use one avidly. When it breaks I'll have this as a (slight?) upgrade.

I usually map things like switching to specific weapons to the thumbpad. I disable the diagonal keys, since I can never get the selection precise enough. If I need more than four selections, I map the rest to the red shift state and set the "v" key to momentary red shift. That gets me 4 numbers with immediate access, and another 4 delayed by just a hair.
In games like TF2 with fast weapon switching it's like having the "last weapon" button for EVERY weapon.
Once you get used to using an N52 it's very difficult to not have one. For a FPS'er it's almost invaluable.
For years I used "The Claw", which I loved. For pure FPS action, I still like it better than the n52. It's easier to avoid hitting the wrong button with The Claw.
But, I play more MMOish games these days, so the extra buttons are a big help. It was an adjustment to switch to the n52, but I really like it. It's especially nice when gaming with a laptop, so you can maintain a somewhat ergonomic position.

Hmm. I have the Fang Gamepad which was nice coming from pure standard keyboard-only before it. But this looks even neater. Maybe I can get this and give the Fang to my wife when we build her PC.

Shame that my hands are too small to use this comfortably.

TigerDirect now has the best price, $49.99. I wish they would just release it. I've been digging around to see if the backlight can be turned off with no luck - does anyone know if it can?
*edit 11/27* - I sent an email to Belkin customer service asking when this would come out, they said it would be available on their website 12/15. I also asked if if the backlight could be turned off (like the Saitek keyboard), they said no.
It looks like this won't be out now until January.
An interesting bit, and what prompted me to post this: Newegg is having an $18 sale on the n52 regular model, with a $10 mail in rebate. In theory, if you get the rebate, they'll cost you $8. Free shipping.
They have the reputation of not being built very well and wearing out (no surprise, it's a Belkin product), so I ordered two. For $18, and maybe $8, what the hell.
As much I love the design of the n52 it was too big for my small hands (even with the palm rest removed
) For those of you that are getting the new one, please post some size comparison with the old when you get it.
thanks

Whoa. Good deal. Until I checked the site I didn't even notice the rebate. At $18, it's a good price. If they come through on the rebate it's a steal.

I've got a couple of friends that have the n52 model and they seem to really enjoy it when it comes to MMORPGs. I personally wouldn't use one since I rather have a special keyboard for FPS gaming. Such as my Wolf King controller pad.

Going OT a little, but I have tried the Wolf King, N52, and I finally settled on Merc Stealth
For those who has small hands and likes to customize every button, this keyboard is perfect. It is the only "gaming" keyboard that I actually enjoy using.
