Joining the GWJ Alliance on Blackhand
Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007 - 2:16pm
I'm an on-again off-again WoW player and have never really found a decent guild to hang with, but now that I've realized there's a GWJ guild, I'm thinking about moving my character over and joining.
A couple of questions before I throw down the $25 to do so, though. Is the guild pretty active? Accepting of casual players? Friendly? These all seem like pretty obvious questions, but $25 isn't cheap.
Let me know if I should do it!

While I'm pretty much out-of-action for the time being, I can answer these fairly easily.
Very. GWJ Alliance is currently learning and pushing through Kara (as seen by the many BHA:Kara threads on here). Most nights will have about 15-20 people on, and raid nights can be a bit higher. You'll find a good number wanting to run instances (normal and heroics), or wanting to group up for quests/daily's. Also, there's a good number of people who either just recently joined and are heading up to 70, or are running alts to 70, so it's not real hard to get an old-world or lower level Outland instance group going.
Again, very. We try to even keep raiding fairly casual. You won't have anyone trying to get you to attend something you don't want to run, and there's no penalties for only playing a small amount per week.
As long as you can put up with the banter, then yes.

The only rule for joining is that you are registered on these boards and an adult (check). Once you join, you will be free to participate in whatever capacity fits into your schedule. Want to raid, we run Kara weekly. Want to run instances, we have people doing runs nightly. Want to just hang out with a good group of people, guild chat is active and people are helpful. Not sure what level you are but we have both a good group of 70's along with a fair number of people who are leveling both mains and alts.
Out of curiosity, is this a PvP server? I'm currently on Maelstrom which is PvP....
PvE server. So for you it would be a one-way trip

I brought my pally from a pvp to a pve ... sometimes sad about it, (only when im feeling like being an a-hole and ganking lowbies...) But you can always go to a bg and fight if you really want. It's really nice to be in a good guild however, and the higher content is fun.
You didn't really say what level(s) you are. It can be tough to find groups for pre-Outland content, but once in Outland you can find groups around most nights if you are patient.
Ah... bummer.
I actually enjoy the dimension that PvP adds to the questing environment. Having to keep one eye open all the time makes mindless grinding half enjoyable. I'm somewhat embarassed to admit it, but my heart starts pounding when I'm involved in PvP out in the environment (not in BG's as they are somewhat free-for-alls). I don't even mind being ganked as it plays into the overall RP of the Horde vs. Alliance. Camping, of course, I abhor. Luckily is does not happen to me too often (I'm a level 49 Warrior [my main]) and I've only been camped twice or three times since I've started playing.
I'm currently in with a pretty good RP Guild but it is a smallish guild making questing/instancing at my level pretty rare.
Oh well.
Wazoo
There are a couple of folks who are still pushing up through the low levels. My main and highest char is only 42 now, I'm not exactly racing, but I'm on pretty frequently and am always game to group up.

1) If anyone wants an old world instance, start a thread. It works wonders. I know a group did SM Cath this week, and I we got a VC run last week with no prior planning.
2) wazoo - we aren't PvP, so it's moot, but I would suggest that ganking lowbies is not the GWJ way.

Actually, it was Hanta who said "when im feeling like being an a-hole and ganking lowbies..."
So it's the way for at least one GWJer, if it were possible

I'll be happy to move to a PvE server. There's plenty of PvP to be had in arenas, etc. Getting ganked all the time is just annoying. I find no excitement in that whatsoever, so I'll be glad for the move.
My main is a level 52 that I'd really like to get into Outland, which I've never been to.

But hey , you dont need to be on a pvp server to do this , just walk flagged through any of the lowbie zones. If they flag , well then their asking for it. And if you dont know im a big jerk by now ... well then i dont know what i can do to convince you.
Chalk up another one for mobile GWJ. Sorry, wazoo.
For the record, Hanta can gank all the lowbies he wants as long as he keeps me alive.

Ya not happening any more , im going to respec ret.. ill dps from now on.
I don't have much to add to what the others have said. Come on over if you want and have fun. That really is what we are about. Guild rules are pretty simple:
Adult
Member of the GWJ Forums
Abide by the CoC
Treat others with respect
Have fun
No Leet
All new members have to spend 2 weeks as a Fairy Princess
We do have a few of the under 18 crowd, they are children of GWJ BHA members and their parent is responsible for them.
Hanta, lalala I'm not listening

-lol- Yeah, I am with you Hanta. After joining a group to finally do BM to get Keyed (woot!), the healer (another paladin in fact) said.. "What? We have a paladin tanking? Count me out." They dropped, group collapsed, and no keying was had for Val & I.
Therefore, it is time to respec Ret! I know the Hanta & Sunseeker combo was effective before when we got to play.. imagine how awesome we'll be now!
And I am a slow learner and found myself liking you whenever I grouped.. so.. you are failing miserably as jerk! Or maybe I am jerk too and gravitate to the same.. hm...

Sounds great. I'll probably make the move in the next few days (when I get some time to play a bit). Thanks!

Best tank I ever had for BM was a Paladin. He tanked everything, adds included, and we stomped the instance flatter than roadkill that's been hit by a steamroller.

Exactly. Sometime during my first BM run, I realized that if I just consecrate somewhere in a straight line between the portals and Medivh, I'd get all the adds. The next two runs I did were very smooth (although, on the last run I did, the final boss spawned while we were still fighting the previous Lord...which definitely didn't happen the first two times).
I feel your pain, Sun. Last weekend I was trying to do it to hit Revered, responded to a "LF Tank to roll on BM", and got invited into the group. Then I got kicked from the group for not being a Warrior. Look, dipshi#, if you want a Warrior, say "LF Warrior".
The joke's on him, though, he was still spamming his misleading message thirty minutes later when I zoned into Mech with a bunch of guildies.

Ya I really don't get this adversity to having a pally tank. I dont think Ive ever had a problem with them; in fact the worst time ive had healing was with a warrior tank in a pug. Am I missing something? Or are people just rediculously stoopid ?
Both?

I have known GWJ for near three years and just recently joined the guild ... and I have found nothing but fair play, a willingness to help and be helped, and an inclusive attitude amongst all - truly, every player matters.
WOW: GWJ Alliance on Blackhand (BHA)
Back in the days before BC paladins couldn't tank for crap. Old-time players who haven't played with a good paladin tank these days might still hold old prejudices.
....you mean to tell me their are other tanking classes besides Pally's?!?!?
All kidding aside...I have seen some really amazing feats done by pally tanks in the last 6 months and all doubters should see one in action...their toon will change very quickly. As a hunter, I do have issues with having to hit a mob 4-6 times to draw into trap after a non-los pull by avenger shield pull...(distracting shot..arcane..rinse and repeat till mob gets tired of beating on pally's shield)!!!!!!!!!
The key to victory is to not suck as bad as the other side.
I still remember the first group I had with Khush where I was tanking until I had to step aside for another person (can't remember who it was, but pretty sure it wasn't a pally), it was still before I joined GWJ. I kept pulling aggro and tanking anyways lol
As for the shield pull, if it crits and gets close enough to attack me, it'll probably die before aggro can be pulled
I love being a threat magnet!

Actually, if you ask real nice I'm sure you can spend longer as a Princess. Tad spent quite a bit of time with that title and had to beg the all mighty leader to change it.
-Xino
I've been a princess for a while now too, actually. Not that I mind.

I brought my lock in on a BM group that Krindle tanked. I thought we were in for problems when I first saw the group makeup - Warlock, Warlock, Warlock, Pally, Pallly.
This was easily the funnest Black Morass run I've ever done. I think he pulled ALL the beginning adds in that place in 2 pulls. All 3 warlocks we're using seed of corruption to burn them down. I was seeing 18k-20k pop up on my screen everytime it exploded. He never lost aggro once. On my best day tanking, there is no way on earth I could have pulled off tanking as many adds at one time that Krindle had. We even resorted to seed of corruption on each of the portals. So in addition to tanking the portal bosses, he tanked all the adds as well.
Truly, Black Morass is a tanking pally's best friend.
There isn't a warrior in the world that can tank that way with three warlocks blasting seed of corruption. My main is a warrior tank. I have experience in tanking and I know how to mitigate damage as a warrior. But warriors just don't have the tools to tank 2+ mobs that effectively. And pally's have had huge improvements in single mob threat generation.
I've really had several positive experiences with pally tanks post-BC. Anyone who dismisses a pally tank right away doesn't understand the game anymore.

Yeah. We did BM (Sun & Val are now keyed! Woot!) this weekend and it was fun & easy. Reap's direction was awesome and the rest went smooth.
I didn't try to hold all the adds on each portal.. because we didn't plan it out that way.. but I could certainly pull some when things got hairy for the DPSers and hold up well enough. Great healing (Jut), great DPS (Shanker, Val, & Terase), and good teamwork, and suddenly all the horror stories I have heard about BM seemed unwarrented.
Reap and Ter left us so we grabbed Salire and Fiddles and cruised through a completely problem free run into OH.
All-in-all, a very satisfying morning in the CoT.
