Chicago: The City that Drinks (S&T)

Time:
10/19/2007 - 18:59 - 10/20/2007 - 03:59
Description:
Dudes, we're going drinking. I'll add location details as I get them, but the date's set. I set the end time at 3:59am because I don't intend this to go on any later than closing time. Probable location is Jak's Tap at 901 W. Jackson. You can get there via the L's Blue Line (UIC-Halsted stop: North two blocks, and west for two intersections) or Green Line (Clinton stop is 3 blocks north and 4 east -- the Pink stops there too, but that's a silly line). Buses that run near there are the 8 (Halsted), 20 (Madison), 126 (Jackson), and 127 (Madison/Roosevelt circulator). From Union station, it's 5 blocks west. From Ogilvie (Northwestern), it's 5 blocks west and 2 south. Street parking isn't perfect, but there are spots. There are meters, pay lots, and valets nearby. In so far: Augustus F DarthB0b0 EvilRoy Grenn Kaostheory Kolbo McChuck SirRockford Stryker WiredAsylum Wordsmythe (+ E Hunnie) I fully expect the awesome will be fully in attendance. Fully.

I'm pretty sure all are welcome. We might have to haze coffee grinders, though.

Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
You want to be where
- Oh, wait. That's bars in Boston. In Chicago the theme songs are all about brats and deep dish pizza, right?

Yeah, I'm looking to keep it around Greektown and the West Loop, so it'll be walkable from the two bigger train stations. It's a little farther from the LaSalle station and the Electric Line if you're from the south side or NW Indiana.

Can we get a roll call here so I can anticipate how much space we'll need?

They often order cheap thin crust and give it out free for happy hour on Friday. It's not a pub in the "we have a kitchen" kind of way. It's really just a local bar, but it has a neon shamrock in the window. It's ethnic that way. Beers are good and fairly cheap, though.

If we get enough folks, we can order food in there I think.

A couple other places around there are Jack's Tap and Jefferson Tap. The former sells 40 kinds of beer. The latter had a scandal with some cops beating up a server, but is otherwise a fairly classy place.

Yeah, I saw the story about the cop beating up the server. Crazy.

Anyway, cheap free pizza is still free. I'll be there for sure, I may bring my wife, I'm not sure yet.

That may turn out to be a better option. I stopped in to Dugan's today during the Bears game, and it turns out the bartender is holding her birthday party in the back room of Dugan's on the 19th. Either we go somewhere else, go earlier, or go a different day.

If you're a regular at Jak's, would you mind stopping in and doing a little recon for us this week?

Looks like I have to be that guy. Something out of my hands has been planned for Friday night that I have to go to. Is Saturday a possibility? Same weekend, different night?

EDIT: Actually, looking at the top I've seen people have already confirmed they'll be going on Friday. I don't want to screw up anyone's plans. And I'm willing to bet that on a day or two beforehand I'll get a call from my mom saying the family has plans for Saturday for my dad's birthday. Dang.

How late does everyone think they'll stay? I may be able to make it by 9-10.

What do you want to know? Are you looking for a private room/bar? Jaks has back / separate rooms . The bar manager is one of my tenants, I'll run upstairs and ask her.

Thanks, Roy!

We now have six people who have explicitly confirmed they're in. If we're reserving a room, it'd be nice to know how many people are coming.

Also, feel free to bring SOs and the like. (I guess you can decide how significant they should be.)

So if we get a back room, we are focusing on pure, drinking madness?

Would it be possible to set up some kind of gaming related activities if we got a back room?

I could bring a system if necessary.

Board games might be easier to set up and all, but I'm OK with either games or just drinking for a couple hours. Again, if the crowd is small enough (or dwindles enough) to squeeze into my 650 sq. ft. apartment, then we can always retreat to there and play games.
