Road Trip Tunes: Help me pick more.

I have multiple road trips appraoching in the next two months. Two of about 8 hours, and one 5 to 6 hour one.

My normal road trip survival tactic is to eat lots of snacks and listen to music pretty much non stop both ways.

Help me choose some music!

I've got some old standbys planned like Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever disc, which is always great, but I need more. My taste in music is a tad unpredictable, but not very specific. I listen to everything from Johnny Cash to In Flames to Amy Winehouse. The only exception is rap. I don't get rap. Most everything else will at least be considered though and if it's got a good beat to drive to I'll probably love you for it.

So I ask you, GWJ collective, to save me from a horribly boring road trip.

Note: please don't use my last.fm page as a guide. It's... well it's only what I've burned to my computer and that tends to be music I play with winamp while I play multiplayer games. There's some exceptions in there but that's what most of it is. Not a good example of what I generally listen to.

How about some Ween? It'll keep you on your toes, and has a certain warped sense of humor. I'd recommend Chocolate and Cheese, Pure Guava, and 12 Country Greats. None of those albums sound like each other, but Pure Guava is the most "out there" of the bunch.

In my recent roadtrips though, I've forgone music and just listened to the This American Life podcast. Great stuff.

Download a few episodes of This American Life.

Great show to listen to on a trip.

Coffee Grinder

As much as I love me music, I prefer podcasts for long trips.

I 2nd the "This American Life" notion although you can only legally download the most recent episode but even that is guaranteed to keep you occupied for an hour. http://www.thislife.org/Radio_Podcast.aspx

I also really like "Radio Lab", I think you can download all of their hour long episodes from http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/

I also enjoy "trying" to learn new languages with podcasts like "Coffee Break Spanish" http://coffeebreakspanish.typepad.com/

Depending on your taste in music might I recommend dipping into my drug of choice?

Soundtracks fill my Ipod to the brim.

How about some Pan's Labyrinth or Red Violin?

Oh yeah, that Red Violin soundtrack is spectacular. Corigliano FTW.

Great suggestions on This American Life as well.

Some of my favorite road trip albums:

Joe Satriani - The Extremist (especially good for sunny road trips)
Tenacious D - s/t
Ocean Machine (Devin Townsend) - Biomech (especially good for rainy road trips)
Mr. Bungle - California
Bob and Doug McKenzie - Great White North

Ouch. Two hours a day would give me road rage beyond control. Of course you have to do what you have to do, but it sure makes me appreciate my 35 second commute each morning.

I personally go for all music on road trips, with a rare audio book. You want stuff that won't put you to sleep, but also won't make you too aggro, and you need some variety. My suggestions are a bit all over the place...

AC Newman - The Slow Wonder
AC/DC - whatever you like best. I'm partial to High Voltage.
Beatles - Pick one. How about the White Album.
The Clash - London Calling
Everclear - Sparkle and Fade
Pixies - Doolittle
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Boston - Boston - cheesy but great driving music
X - Los Angeles/Wild Gift
Weezer - Pinkerton
Swervedriver - Mezcal Head - most rocking of the shoegazer bands
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Let Love In
Orbital - Diversions
The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America

Since you mentioned Johnny Cash I'll throw in some alt. country:
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road
Maria McKee - You Gotta Sin to Get Saved

edit: just realized that almost all of my picks are like, old. Let me throw in a couple more recent albums:
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid of You And I Will Beat Your Ass
White Rabbits - Fort Nightly

WAR: Coda, Archmage, Vortex <Unguilded>

Strekos covered them a bit, but The New Pornographers and their satellite bands are great. AC Newman and Neko Case were mentioned above, but Destroyer is amazing, particularly Notorious Lightning.

(Also, psst, it's so 1995 to say you don't get rap - you should now say "I don't get hip hop.")

A killer eclectic list that reads like my last.fm greatest hits.

Allow me to add two albums I recently bought for running (I'm too lazy to make actual mixes).

Bowling for Soup - A hangover you don't deserve.
Most people have only ever heard that song that got airplay - 1985 - which makes them seem like some wierd al cover band. They're not. They've got a nice driving quasi-low-fi pop sound thing going. They veer into Toad the Wet Sprocket land once in a while. They're also pretty in line with --

Weezer (Green Album)
- I had most of the others but somehow skipped this one, and its great cruisin music, at least for my tastes.

I, unfortunately, do not like Tenacious D. I know I know, what planet are you from, have you been checked for brain damage, etc, etc, etc. But I don't get'em. Sometimes it's funny, but in general I just wish I was listening to something else. I'll add Satriani and Mr. Bungle to the list though

Weezer's green and blue discs are already on the list and I prefer them to Pinkerton, but good suggestion anyway sir. I already have Surfer Rosa on the list too, but I'll have to pickup Doolittle. I'm somewhat ashamed that I only own one Pixies disc. Added everything quoted to the list

Foo Fighters, including The Colour and the Shape, are on the list multiple times already. Added Kinski though!

Ah, and to those who mentioned Flogging Molly: I salute you. I already had Drunken Lullabies on the list but I suppose more Flogging Molly is never a bad thing.

Thanks to all who've posted suggestions so far. Getting a little diversity in there is going to help a lot

Radiohead - everything after Pablo Honey is fantastic. There's also something to listening to them in their entirety. OK Computer and Kid A are highlights.
