Halo 3 Impressions and Reviews (Non-Spoilers)
I love Halo 3 because I want from it the same things I want from a great kung-fu movie - as little plot as possible to string together brilliant action sequences. Viewed like a good/bad Jet Li import, Halo 3 can somehow be a Perfect 10 game without negating anything that Tom Chick bitched about.
To get the negatives out of the way, the story presentation actually takes a step backwards from Halo 2 due to horrendous dialog and poor voice acting (check out IGN's video review if you don't believe me). Marty O'Donnell's music also hasn't stood out save for the menu piece which was ripped straight from the very first E3 demo. I just replayed Halo 2 not 2 days ago and differences are striking. Halo 2 almost feels Shakespearean compared to this, while the plot for Halo 3 comes off as fan service for the immature 12 year olds who will be calling me horrible things on Live. This game goes a little too far in with the "ZOMG Master Chief" ego pumping. My favorite is when he pulls the gun off his back and into ass-kicking position only to return it to his back 2 seconds later. Strike a pose! Speaking of that first E3 demo, I've reached that point in the game and somehow they screwed it up, the emotional impact isn't the same.
The other minor complaint is that the level design is confusing at times and involves too much backtracking. It's fun to fight in these spaces, but when you're asked to move to the next fun spot you'll often be scratching your head on how to get there. To a lesser extent, Halo 3 doesn't "change" the gameplay dramatically, so if you're a hater hoping that Halo was going to be morphed into a puzzle fighter with anime characters you'll still be disappointed.
And that's it with the bad stuff - everything else is totally kick ass. Remember this is the sequel to a last gen game that still gets more online action than any current gen game (save this one). Halo must be doing something right to keep everyone's attention for that long. The Halo 3 beta already told me exactly what we're getting here, just imagine that plus hundreds of more options. The gameplay is equal thirds of Halo 1 + Halo 2 + Halo new. The AI is the best in any shooter on any platform, and when a gang of Brute Choopers charges at you while a Covenant dropship disgourges a clown car's worth of enemies without a single drop in framerate, you'll have a huge sh*t-eating grin on your face. The graphics are like a Kate Winslet next to Gears of War's Jessica Alba, certainly not polygons I would kick out of bed.
The Forge and Game Films deserve special mention, because they rocket this game 34 million miles to Mars where otherwise it would "merely" make the 200,000 mile trip to the Moon. We all know how co-op or online multiplay can add to a single-player experience. The Forge and Film modes are just as feature rich and involving. Last night Danjo, zero, kilgore and I were watching our co-op game, pointing out cool moments that we each had and generally getting our minds blown. Game films just make the whole experience more enjoyable, counter to the Forge which extends the experience years beyond what it would otherwise deserve. Although you don't have the level of control you would find on a PC map editor, the ease of use and ease of sharing your work means that we'll probably see as much diversity as some of the greatest PC shooters like Quake 1 or Half-Life.
I could go on and on, but this game is just about as a sure thing for shooter fans as anything else you're gonna find.
We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.

So should I shut down my thread and put my further impressions here?

This appears to be spoiler free, and since I have no intentions of buying this game at any point in the near(or distant) future, I desire spoilers. But that's just me.

I've only gotten to the 2nd level so far, but is David Cross doing any voice acting for this one?

I just bought my Limited Edition at lunch. I opened it up right there, and it was scratched, so they sent me to customer service. As soon as I got to the counter the girl promptly got a stack of seven unopened ones and started rattling them to check for disc slippage. Out of those seven, 2 were good.
Woo hoo, Halo 3 for the win.

I am enjoying Halo 3 very much and would recommend it to anyone that enjoyed the others in the series.
Sorry for the briefness but I'm still a little too shell shocked by how motherf*cking crazy insane awesome this title is to come up with anything more detailed.
Letters to the Internet
The cutscene dialogue and story is almost indescribably bad, and the combat makes other games look like a Punch and Judy show.
It's still too early to tell if the Brute AI is as good or better than the elites'. That will take many, many playthroughs to determine.
So far the soundtrack has been very much just a rehash of the Halo 1 and 2 score, but reorchestrated. I don't know how to feel about that since it really is great music. Then there's the discrepancy in the themes, though. Why the f*ck would you take a piece of music you have very strongly associated with Banshees several times over two games, and make it tank battle music? Por que?
It's as if the Bungie team could be evenly split down the middle. Team A worked on the core of the game, the nuts and the bolts. Game engine, level design, AI, weapon balance, vehicles, etc. All the stuff that you use and do and is really important. Team B was all frills. Music, story, cutscenes, etc. All the stuff that doesn't really have any bearing on the fun factor. Team A deserves to be hoisted upon the shoulders of gamers everywhere, while golden confetti rains down from real life Phantoms. Team B paid a steet urchin in beef jerky to phone it in. At least they got their priorities straight.

Based on what I've played, Halo 3 is far superior to Halo 2. The weapons feel better, the level design is awesome, the pacing is way better, and the AI is a huge improvement. If it continues to be this good, it may end up being my favorite out of the three. Unfortunately I've been playing it on a friends 360 since I don't own one myself. This may be the game I get a 360 for.

I'm secretly working for Microsoft trying to get people to buy Halo 3. I actually have four 360s for each room of my house and eight Master Chief helmets.
For my money the Brutes are a little too weak. They were terrors to run into in Halo 2. They seem much easier to kill in 3. But yeah, otherwise I agree with Danjo. The gameplay is rock frickin' solid. 4 player Coop (minus my douche baggery mentioned in the other thread) was the most fun I've had playing multiplayer in a long long time. Playing as an elite is awesome. Being in a pack with other elites is awesome. And I love the graphics. I don't care what others say. There was so much beautiful stuff to look at. I plan on playing this SP and Coop so that in SP I can take in the scenery more.

I also thought brutes were slightly less powerful. I thought it broke even though, with the good AI and the amount of enemies you are always up against it can still be quite difficult.
It really depends upon how many people you're playing with. In the previous games you had to bump it up to Legendary before elites posed a huge threat to two Spartans. That we're hitting it on Heroic with four is definitely feeling like overkill.
I'm sure that's what the Skulls are for. I look forward to going at it with four people when the entire team goes back a checkpoint if even one of you dies as that will foster a much more tactical approach to the game.
As it is one wild card can drunkenly charge the front lines over and over again with no negative consequences.

I WAS BEING TACTICAL.
(Aside: I do apologize if I was being too boorish last night.)
I'm enjoying it though. Like MG, I was in this as much for the story as I was for the gameplay, and I feel like i'm getting my money's worth from that, and this may be the first FPS in years that has me coming back for Multi-Player fun. Me likey.

By the time I get a 360 and want to play co-op everyone here will have played it 3 times over.
All I've done is the campaign, but I'm pretty pleased. There are, unfortunately, a few very durable Brutes sporting big guns, an enemy that feels to much like a "boss" for me to enjoy. I do like the number of marines you get to fight alongside - sure, they die fast (though they're not as bad as I remember), but at least they keep supplying fresh ones.

I wish we had taken a video of last night. My drunken "charge the front lines" moment came when I waded into a group of enemies and just started swinging the hammer. Awesome.

Unless you've played somewhere around 25 games since then, you do have the video. Unlike the beta, you don't have to do anything to save videos. As you play, videos are just saved automatically to a limited "cache" space (I'm sure it is a certain size limit, but the interface says it will be "roughly the last 25 games"). If you want to keep them from being overwritten, all you have to do is go into your theater lobby, view your "recent film" list, and hit X on the ones you want to keep permanently.
Interestingly enough, the game also does a similar thing for game and map variants. No longer do you have to wonder what that crazy game type you played last night was -- you can go into the map and game type selectors in the custom game lobby, look at the "recent" lists, and hit X to save the map or game type to your hard drive permanently.
So basically, the philosophy is that if you have played it recently, you can save or view any aspect of the game at your leisure.

I just meant I won't be getting a 360 for a few months so it's likely a lot of people will probably have finished it.
Whoa, I have to go find that moment, then. Thanks Zero, Danjo.

I got to introduce my younger son to it last night, and the look on his face when he started swinging for the bleachers was worth money.
And the nice thing about the videos is they're not actually video - they're the game data that gets re-rendered when you watch it. They're whole LOT smaller than an equivalent video file. So don't be too shy about saving them; you have a lot more room than you think.

Ok so I only put it in for a minute. Im saving the experience for later tonight when I join a friend. But I was looking around, checking out Forge and the various features and I was confused by the fact that there doesn't seem to be any options menu.
I couldn't find where to check audio/video/control options anywhere. Or where to go to adjust my multiplayer look, if that is still possible. Are these things just not there or did I miss something really obvious?

Press start just about anywhere (in any lobby, or in game). That will bring up the "settings" menu. It is marked in the interface in the lower left of the lobby screen, but if you aren't looking it might be easy to miss.
Edit: Also, be sure to note that there are two "tabs" to that menu, one for media management and the other for the control, a/v, and appearance options.

Must have been that 'tab' I missed.

Having never played any of the two previous Halos, I went into this blind and frankly on a lark since they had copies to spare at Target this afternoon. The first chapter I played was entertaining; heads and shoulders above most console shooters I've ever played, BioShock included. Haven't gotten around to MP yet and might not for a while, but if this holds up like it has so far, Jack might have another foe waiting to kick him off the GotY platform.
