Resident Evil Extinction: Don't waste your money
Monday, September 24th, 2007 - 4:02pm
I saw it last night, dropped ten bucks on the third movie in a series that has been at least mildly entertaining. This one though was just awful. It tries to be a sort of horror flick, throwing in lots of cheap scares so predictable that the only scary part is just how freaking loud the theater speakers are.
The story is weak, even for the series and instead of wrapping it up for a nice neat trilogy, it begs for a fourth movie, which I won't see without a gun pointed at my head.

Milla Jovovich wears a tank top that is essentially see through. Milla Jovovich shows a lot of skin.
That's all I got to say.

I think the problem started back with the first movie when they decided to make an action flick instead of survival horror.

My friend sat me down and made me watch the first 2 movies last week. I was skeptical but I went for it. I think I started enjoying the first one when the team got to that laser hallway and the team leader, (who I liked in the newer James Bond movies) shortly after I predicted aloud that he'd die at the end, was sliced into a hundred pieces by the super-grid-laser thing.
The first wasnt spectacular cinema, but I got into it as a decent zombie/action flick
The second was ok. I can't say why I didn't think it was just a goofy cheesy movie but I walked away not hating it.
Maybe it was the 10$ I had to pay to see this one. The others were free to me, and they came with dinner and booze. But the cheap scare attempts really started to annoy me in Extinction.
Cue actor creeping slowly across the frame
Cue generic horror movie tension music
Cue cheap scare in 3... 2... 1...
It isnt the only reason to hate the movie, not by a long shot, but it really bugged me.

I thought the first was mediocre though entertaining. The second suffered from "recursive badassery syndrome". It spent the whole beginning driving into the viewers "OMG, look at how badass this chick is! She's f*cking hardcore! OMG BUT LOOK NOW! This other chick is driving a motorcycle through a church window and FIRING GUNS! SHE IS SO GODDAMN BADASS! SHE'S EVEN MORE HARDCORE! AND BADASS! AT LEAST TWICE AS BADASS AS THE FIRST GIRL!" Ugh, give my poor brain a rest!

I guess you just have to be in the right mindset to enjoy these movies. They strike me as modern grindhouse flicks.

I just don't find Milla Jovovich nice... so there's absolutely no reason for me to even watch any of the three.

Maybe. I think they take themselves too seriously for what they are and there's not enough substance to support the flash.

They've been showing the second film on TV, recently. The first two RE films are without a doubt some of the worst cinema I've seen in recent years, but a few beers and good buddies and they're worth tons of laughs. Worth being on the Bad Movie Thread.
I enjoyed the film because I wasn't expecting much and didn't get much. The cheap scare tactics were a bit annoying, but what really bothered me was some of the close ups on Jovovich. I find Jovovich attractive especially when she looks a little gritty, but for whatever reason on some of her close ups they either used an airbrush technique on her face or the make up lady went nuts on a couple of days on the shoot. It was really noticeable and very inconsistent and bothered me to no end.
As for the movie, the actions sequences were ok, the story was sub par, and the ending was a let down as was pointed out earlier in this thread. Overall I would say it is not worth checking out in the theater but might be fun to rent on DVD.

My biggest problem with this movie series?
Milla Jovovich.
There, I said it. Can't stand her. Loved her in the Fifth Element, hated her in everything else.
I would've liked the first one much more if she wasn't in it. Or had been brutally slaughtered in the first five minutes.

I have a terrible weak spot for these movies. I can't defend them, can't really say what it is that I like about them, but I watch them. A lot. And enjoy them.
I'll see a fourth if they make it.

This is what really made me not like this one. There really was no sense of foreboding except when they set up the cheap scares and those only made me jump because incredibly loud screeching sound effects that told you exactly when to be scared.
She did look silly at times, especially when she was sleeping in the desert and her lips were shining from about a gallon of lip gloss. There were also a couple of instances where they had her face covered in dirt then clean in the next shot. Completely inconsistent.
The acting by the bad guys forming the board for Umbrella was completely laughable, especially the douchebag who was wearing sunglasses in every shot. Overall, the villains were pretty lame.
It might be worth renting if you liked the first two (I did to some degree), but it's not worth paying full theater price.

Seriously. The only thing more perplexing than her are people who think Nicole Ritchie is hot.

You're all not, I'm in the same boat. Put her in some baggy clothes and an Oliver Twist hat with no makeup and she'd look like a 12 year old boy. Yech.

Being a fan of the games, I was a little disappointed that they took a more super human action approach instead of a traditional horror approach. I thought the first two movies were enjoyable but like Gaald said, I wasn't really expecting them to blow my mind. It would have been simple for the writers to rap up the story at the end of the second movie and avoid a humiliating third.

I had lunch with Milla Jovovich when she was promoting Return to Blue Lagoon. She was only 15 at the time (I was 21), but I remember I couldn't stop thinking how insanely hot she was.
She's obviously changed in the last 15 years, but she still ain't ugly...

Speaking of other video game based movies, I really liked Silent Hill. They really stuck close to the content of the game. I guess all it takes to create a good video game movie is to follow the source material.
I think we can all agree that all three Resident Evil movies are better than any one of Uwe Boll's abominations.
I couldn't agree with you more. The reason I enjoyed Silent Hill is because it kept the atmosphere of the video game without it seeming like you were watching one. If they had done this with RE, I probably would've enjoyed it.

Before RE:E, the series felt a lot like Evil Dead. But sometime during the making of Extinction, Paul Anderson forgot that the movies are a joke. Some parts were still funny though. Like everything involving Wesker. And the scene where the birds kill Betty.
don't you wonder sometimes...
I'm another that enjoys the first two movies and has no idea why. I know they're pretty bad, maybe even awful. I know it. But I like them. Not a lot, but I find them at least partially enjoyable.
This one though.. I saw today and it is indeed pretty awful.

The first one was a solid action horror flick, but I didn't make it more than maybe 10-15 minutes into the second one. I like Milla, though. She might not be the best actress around, but she tried hard in The Messenger and she made Joan of Arc seem like a seriously crazy hot piece of ass. That's a version of history that I like.
I took this movie for what it is, a fun popcorn flick. I agree that they could have been consistent with the dirt and grim on everyone. I mean, your in a desert wasteland, no one should look that good. Maybe i enjoyed it because I was with my buddies and I was drinking whiskey they whole time, but I do not regret the $7.50 i spent on seeing it.
I will say this though. Why oh why, after years of living with the zombie menace to people still not recognize when someone is getting sick due to a zombie bite. I really hate it when someone gets bit, only to turn at the worst possible time (except in Shaun of the Dead, it was done great there)

Ok, so you're saying this like its a bad thing ?
I mildly liked the first movie, the 2nd was cable-tolerable and would have seen this on in the theatre, however the reviews herein will allow me to delay for home viewing.
