Resident Evil Controversy
Most of you are probably aware of a few people calling Resident Evil 5 racist since the trailer depicted Leon killing zombies of African or Haitian descent. Roberto Lovato of Alternet goes one step further and writes an article declaring the entire series of that travesty. The lack of research is laughable and I recommend you all read it here for a good chuckle.
From what I understand of his logic, any ethnic minority in a negative role is racist and stereotypical. I guess that means all villains must be white. Let's take it one step further and make the protagonist a minority. Wait a second, then you'd have a minority killing white people! Reverse racism!

Saw this yesterday on gamepolitics.com and I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said. There's a really good comment to that article titled "Research. Research. Research." which pretty much explains in great detail why the writer is a fool.
Now that I think about it, hubby and I spoke about this at dinner. We concluded that all zombies deserve equal treatment regardless of gender, color, ethnicity, religion or sexual preference.

I read about this controversy initially right after the trailer was released for E3. If anything, I guess the move from rotten zombies, to more 'alive' looking walking undead is feeding this. Still, I think this is just being stirred up by folks who base their careers on feeding the fires of racism and building their own crusades.

Man, this prick loves to cherry pick his information and present this idea that certain ethnic groups are being targeted while ignoring the fact that a wide spectrum of people are made into targets. He latches onto the Haitian controversy of GTA3, making it seem as if their gang was somehow unique in being gunned down by the player.

I didn't hear anyone call this game racist when RE4 featured the raggedy "Pueblo" in SPAIN. Even if it was full of grammatical mistakes in spanish...
I'm becoming more and more convinced that all this american obsession with race and the "defense of other races" is what perpetuates the cycle. Someone shouts "Alert, racism!" and other people pay attention and go "Wait, it's not racist!" and so ensues a debate that far from solving anything, only generates more bad vibes.
It's a non-issue as far as I'm concerned...

As far as I'm concerned, the only Resident Evil controversey worth discussing is how these aren't goddamn Resident Evil games any more. Resident Evil is a survival-horror game about the Umbrella Corporation, not a third person shooter about alien parasites... even if the third person shooter about alien parasites was really good, arguably better than any of the survival-horror ones.
Code Veronica is THE Resident Evil game.

^^^ Tru dat. I could never get into RE series because it was mostly a struggle with the controls and ammo. Alone In The Dark did horror right.
After trying to replay the original game on my PSP, I have to say-- wow, those controls certainly DO suck. Still, didn't bother me at the time. RE2 was my first serious RE game, and I still remember it fondly.

While I agree that any protest or condemnation of RE5 before the game has been released is knee-jerk, half-baked, and unwarranted, there is something uncomfortable about watching a game trailer in which inhabitants of a third world village are gunned down at large. Sure, they're zombies. I know. But considering they lack the typical zombie trappings (something RE4 did as well), the disconnect is pretty small.
We ask non-gamers to take games seriously. It's important we do as well.
