Sept 24 - Sept 27
I can't entirely explain why I'm as interested in Halo 3 as I am. I'm certain that I've become as much a victim of hype as it seems is everyone drinking Game Fuel, many of whom also seem to have penned caffeine-enhanced ebullient reviews gushing with sticky-sweet praise. If hastily handed out percentages of quantifiable quality are to be aggregated and then actually believed, then previous wunderkind Bioshock has been demoted to salutatorian of the Xbox 360 class of '07. I further realize that buying into the hype around Halo 3 now while snubbing Metroid 3 a few weeks ago for the exact same reasons is an act of hypocrisy which is probably prosecutable in a half-dozen states, but every time I try to bring myself to a place where I can award something like the Company of Heroes expansion Game of the Week, I break out into cold sweat. So, I'll do what I have to do, and embrace my inner Walt Whitman. Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.
On DVD this week, the one funny guy from the 40 Year-Old Virgin plays what appears to be the same character in Knocked Up, and a bunch of TV shows get their latest release. More here.

By the way, speaking of "Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party (09/25)" -- looks like it's actually a honest-to-gum DDR game, with no stains of Mario "franchize" on it!!

Thus begins the months of wallet-cringing purchases. I'll be picking up Halo 3 tomorrow afternoon, and playing it until much later than I should be. The sad thing is that I'll be buying Company of Heroes at the same time, but I have no idea when I'll actually get around to playing it!

Halo is always a nice, polished experience. Perhaps not worthy of the overflowing praise, but an enjoyable single player romp, and decent enough multiplayer.
If nothing else, Halo will keep all the kiddies out of Team Fortress 2 games.

Excellent call Legion. May be worth reinstalling BF2142 as well...
As for Halo 3...despite two decades of game-nerding, I've never laid a hand on any of the series; just because I've never felt compelled to do so. Is it really worthwhile? How do the first two compare to, say, either Half-Life? Dunno where I've been hiding, but I've not heard any hype either. No TV and extreme ad-blocking, I reckon.
Bratz: The Movie: The Game? REALLY? Someone had to sit down and make that?
Oh, and thanks for the bit of Whitman Elysium; though I don't recall anyone/thing funny in the 40-Year Old Virgin

Having played 1 and currently playing through 2 on the PC I have to say they are forgettable single player experiences. Only thing that stands out in my mind is the vehicle stuff. The ending of the first one is fantastic. The second one is much better than the first mostly, but still not that great. Apparently the Multiplayer is where it is at. I could see playing co-op being really fun, but I never had the chance.
Half-Life 1 and 2 beat both of them, hands down.

Whoa. Those are the only games being released this week? Looks like I'm getting Halo 3. Not until Tuesday night though. Sure, I could stand outside an EB for the midnight release but the buses stop running after 11pm.

This brought to mind something Ken Levine said on the podcast last week about game developers and how he'd never met one that didn't believe in or love what they were doing.

With the release of Halo 3 I am confident in thinking that the biggest fans of Halo are the ones that have that defining moment in their experience with FPS in the first Halo. Meanwhile those of us that have more defining moments within Unreal or Quake or Battlefield or Tribes or some other FPS seem to look at Halo as just another FPS game and don't really see what all the hype is about. Commonly saying, "Woopie-fricken-doo! It's an FPS on a console and this is special how?". I played it (the original Halo) a few times at conventions in the waste time game room which always exists. It was a decent time waster but I didn't think it was all that special and certainly did not excite me as much as UT2004 did. Perhaps it's just perspective and personal taste. Being a primarily PC gamer doesn't help either. Do I fault the Halo fanboy in being excited? No more than I would fault the Unreal fanboy or Battlefield fanboy. Do I personally care about the game? Absolutely not. So have fun Halo fans, I hope Halo 3 lives up to your personal expectations. May it be hours of enjoyment for you all.
I'll be over here... playing World in Conflict some more and waiting for some kind of UT3 demo. That Settlers: Rise of an Empire looks neat. The demo play was interesting at very least.

It's somewhat generational, yes. My son is 13 and he's stoked about Holo 3. I'm in my mid thirties and I'm like 'ho hum'. I have been in that mode over shooters but that was when the first solid shooters emerged (Quake 3 Arena, Action Quake 2 etc . . .). And I have played Halo 1 and 2. For a newer generation who missed the real emergence of the multiplayer shooter in the 1990s, this is kinda like it, but on console, and Microsoft has the whole X Box live going and all. My thirteen year old also just finished and LOVED Bioshock, but I got that for him- but he is using his own money to buy Holo 3- he's that excited. My son never used to like shooters, probably 'cause they sucked on consoles, and a PC was a little too intimidating for the younger crowd. But now that younger crowd is hitting puberty and wanting to play these shooters and it's right there on the Xbox. Methinks Microsoft is gonna do well on this one.

I finally broke down and created an account to become a fellow Goodjer after having been reading the front page articles for a few months and lurking on the forums for a bit
. Hi.
I just wanted to express my thoughts about Halo 3. I don't understand all the incredible scores (I mean 10.0! Are you serious?) it accumulated in this short time. Especially when considering the 8.4 reader score it has on IGN.
I have to say, I only played the original Halo on PC, but I stopped playing single player after half an hour because it didn't like it at all. Multi player didn't last a whole lot longer.
I'm with kilroy and think that the gamers praising the Halo franchise as the second coming are the ones whose first contact with an FPS was Halo. Taking into account that almost every occurrence of Halo multi player in a discussion mentions kids trash talking I think most of the audience consists of teens.
I mean, it's fine if it is that great for some gamers. If they are having that much fun, that's what gaming is about. However, I don't think that scores in the high 9ers are justified and are misleading for customers to say the least. I liked the IGN Australia review the most, since it justifies it's relatively low score of 8.9 more than most of the other reviews with higher scores.
"What do you think you're doing?"
"I'd say I was joining the winning team, but that'd imply there existed a time when I wasn't on team evil."
I'm with you and Andy; for me, nothing can touch the original Tribes experience (though with a good squad, 2142 brings me joy), or dorm-LAN Quake III; hearing the guy you fragged for the 12th time in as many minutes cursing your mother somewhere down the hall...good times.
So yeah, as Kilroy said: have fun Halo people and enjoy the high while it lasts; like heroin, nothing will compare to the first hit, so it's all downhill from here ^.^
I'm sure there was a better analogy out there somewhere, I just couldn't be buggered to find it. Stick to what ya know!
EDIT: Not understanding the fury of Edwin. Irksome grammar?

I think thats a pretty big generalization. Wolfenstein was my first PC fps and I have played just about every other PC shooter since. The only shooter that I have more logged hours then Halo is Counter-Strike (4 years of hours). Halo is the only single player experience that I have played through the campaign multiple times over. The draw for me is that it has the pick up and playability of an arcade game combined with the depth of options of a solid PC fps. Co-op is a blast and the amount of polish is the icing on the cake.
For each his own
Edit: Halo 3 and COH: Opposing fronts are going to be playing tug o' war with my attention for quite a while.

I think that just about sums it up. For me it is Marathon. For others the origonal Doom. Still others Quake, Unreal, or Tribes. It just matters when you first got hooked, and that game will always have special meaning to you.

I'm not ashamed to admit it, I love those CSI games. One of the few games I can actually convince my wife to sit down and play with me. Unfortunately, Hard Evidence has actually been postponed to an October/November release.
