Ok so I picked this up on Friday and I really like it. I played the Alpha and Beta and was not really impressed. However, I loved the Ground Control games and thus I bought it anyhow. Much much better in final release. Single player is a blast and I hear multi is lots of fun too. It does bring my system to its knees if I try even remotely higher then mid range settings. Did anyone else pick this one up? Is anyone else going to pick this up? If you liked Ground Control and Ground Control 2 you are most likely going to like this one. Be warned it is pretty, but unless you have a super high end machine - you'll need to dial down the settings.

I played the demo at PC free play in PAX. It felt like a good solid RTS without the typical resource collection.

Where did you pick it up from?

I got mine at Gamestop on the way home on Friday - picked up the Collector's Edition. The piece of the Berlin Wall was a nice lil bit, but the History Channel DVD on the Berlin Wall was worth the extra 10 bucks to me.

Ah! I should've gotten the collector's edition then. The game is out now, but even the employees at my local Gamestop didn't see it coming.

I'm about 3 missions in, and the campaign has been intense so far. Players are thrown right in the midst of a firefight at the very beginning, and are soon charged with completing a series of small objectives. In retrospect, I don't really think that any of the objectives this far into the game is particularly difficult, but during the fight, I was constantly feeling overwhelmed due to several factors.

1. The AI often throws waves after waves of enemy units my way. I can't think that it's doing so intelligently, just a mix of different units that forces you to constantly modify your maneuvers.

2. The objectives often appear in unpredictable fashions. They can come at very bad times, like say when I am in the thick of a fight, and since they're timed, I have no choice but to make do with whatever units I have.

3. Constantly through the fights the officers will relay information to each other over radio. The voice acting is pretty good, and the sense of absolute chaos throughout the battlefield is keenly felt.

There has yet to be a single dull moment. I was always on the move, always managing units, and always setting up tactical strikes. It's been good fun.

Between missions are in game cut-scenes and 2D art slide shows. Rather than developing the main story, the game sometimes use these moments to look at what was happening to individual soldiers' personal lives during the war. The pieces (I've seen two of them) are short but flavorful.

My one complaint so far is on the pacing. After the third mission I got worn out and had to stop. The campaign, aside from the cut-scenes, just didn't give me much time to rest and actually think. Here's to hoping things will get a bit more varied later on.

Yeah, I pre-ordered the Collector's Edition from Future Shop which has no such discount. Blast. I can't wait to play this though as the demo was a blast. I'm definitely up for a night of this.

Beta was great. I'll be picking this up on Tuesday. Has anyone who bought the game early got the GWJ clan up and running?

Still waiting for my copy to get in. Teach me to choose free value shipping. It's sitting in Houston as we speak waiting to have it's happy ass driven to Bryan. Wheee. I am going to play the crap outta this game single player and then go on to multiplayer and see if I can gain better skills than the meager ones I had in the Beta.

$39.99 Canadian? That's about $12.50 in U.S currency right?

I didnt start a GWJ Clan, but I will join it when I get the chance. The game itself is pretty darn good. You can see the Ground Control and Ground Control 2 influence.

Time to watch what you're doin' with those jokes... We are at this point about 5 cents away from having our dollar worth more than yours. I *really* can't wait until I get to make all the jokes I had to put up with for years!

You realize that's defined as the trigger for Canadian Invasion Plan Epsilon, don't you? I mean, come on. We would never allow that to stand.

Yeah, and when we were in Canada this July, the one time we made an exchange, after the small fee, we had exactly the same amount of Canadian Dollars as we had started with US Dollars. I nearly cried!

How many moose skins/beaver pelts/gallons of syrup does that translate too again?

On another note, we missed our annual trip to Ottawa. Man those beaver tails are tasty!

The single player is fun so far. The story was written by novelist Larry Bond. The engine the game uses is really impressive. I'm constantly amazed at how great everything looks and how smooth it is. I'm running 1920x1200 and it looks sublime. Definitely check out the demo.

I'm on a 6800GS 256MB and had to run on the lower end of the settings with 1024x768. The beta was pretty fun but I felt I was missing some of the games magic with the graphics / effects turned down. I'm on the fence on whether or not to pick this one up.
